Opis:
Town twinning in Europe is a unique example of civic activity for the fostering of links between nations. Since the 1950s, the experience gained by the French, German and British communities has contributed to the rapid development of this form of international cooperation also in Poland, after its accession to the European Union (2004).The article shows, on the example of cooperation between the cities of Częstochowa and Pforzheim, how valuable and inspiring are the cultural activities undertaken by the city dwellers regardless of their age and profession. This cooperation demonstrates that the shared experience of culture by partner communities, especially by Poles and Germans, builds a lasting foundation for the close neighbourly relations.

The essence of the presented article is the analysis of four textbooks for teaching the German language which looks into typical elements of German culture as well as cultural universals. The analysis of the following textbooks: Stufen 3, Moment Mal 2, Mittelpunkt B2 and Mittelpunkt C1 has indicated that older ones (more than 10 years older) devoted more attention to typical German culture phenomena and culturally conditioned Polish-German differences than the most recent textbooks where universal areas of reality have been accepted, e.g. travelling, professional life, means of payment, environmental protection. Moreover, new phenomena such as globalization, internationalization, cloning and genetically modified food were mentioned in the textbooks published in 2008.

Author considers the length of functioning of Przeworsk culture cemeteries on the base of detailed chronology. A half of them was used from 160 to 300 years. Only few cemeteries lasted longer time. Most of them was initiated in two periods: A1 and B2. The end of cemeteries is also mainly dated on two periods: the turn of B2/C1 and the beginning of Migration Period.

Opis:
Migrants from Poland in Germany belong to the second largest group of immigrants in Germany. Against this background, the question arises as to their presence in the German public sphere. The article deals with the discourse-critical analysis of the press texts (5 titles: “Suddeutsche Zeitung”, “Die Welt”, “Berliner Zeitung”, “General Anzeiger” as well as “Sachsische Zeitung”, altogether four volumes: 2006, 2011, 2013 and 2016). In the course of the analysis carried out, the following questions, among others, were asked: into which concepts of cultural processes does the reporting on migrants from Poland in Germany in the context of culture inscribe itself; how are they constructed discursively; which discursive strategies and which aspects of cultural and migration policy do they reveal? The article presents the central results of the analysis and discusses the selected visible and invisible logics of the German press discourse in the context of migration and culture.

Thick description, thin description. Cultural way of understanding disability The aim of this article is to present disability from the cultural point of view. Special attention will be paid to Clifford Geertz and his thick description. The phrase thick description is borrowed from Gilbert Ryle. In the classic example one boy’s eye involuntarily twitches while at the same time another boy winks. The physical phenomena are the same but the meaning is different. In understanding disability we have to take into consideration not only the medical, social or biopsychosocial model but cultural context as well.

Research in the years 2004 - 2006 covered an area of 1770.5 sq. meters and yielded more than 125 objects containing material (nos 310, 424 -549), and about 70 structures distinguished only on the basis of a different color. With the Trzciniec Culture settlement a dozen or so of pits and post-holes can be connected. Approx. 50 urn graves damaged and one pit grave should be ascribed mainly to the early and middle phases of the Tarnobrzeg Group. After nine seasons of work, a total examined area amounts to about 44 ares. The subsequent phases of the use of this site are mirrored by grave of the Mierzanowice Culture (no. 303), 70 pits and about 40 post-holes related to the settlement of the Trzciniec Culture and, finally, more than 370 graves and about 50 clusters of pottery and burned human bones (remains of destroyed graves? ) of all phases of the Tarnobrzeg Group. The cemetery can be considered as fully investigated.

This article discusses the strategies that may be used during the process of translation of a literary work. It will be shown that the translators’ choices are context driven. The starting point for an analysis are four theoretical approaches to translation strategies (Markovina 1993, Koller 2004, Gercken 1999 and Hejwowski 2006). The analysis of the translator’s choices will be carried out at the example of Andrzej Stasiuk’s novel “Jak zostałem pisarzem. Próba autobiografii intelektualnej” translated into German by Olaf Kühl.

This article will examine Marion Gräfin Dönhoff’s articles published in the Hamburg-based “Die Zeit“ weekly in the years 1946-1970. Dönhoff, a renowned German journalist, had to leave East Prussia and her family estate in 1945. The articles under analysis demonstrate an evolution of her views on the problem of losing the so-called German East, from the initial inability to come to terms with the new postwar territo-rial reality, to the eventual recognition that Germany’s loss of provinces in the East is permanent and final.

In the Younger Pre-Roman Period the territory of Central Germany was occupied by Jastorf culture. Within this cultural milieu some elements occur typical of areas which are located on the eastern bank of Odra river, that is on the territory of Przeworsk culture. It concerns both material culture and behaviours connected with burial custom. Studies on some specific forms of pottery (cups of TD I) allow to distinguish two regions of Central Germany, which display different reception models of Przeworsk culture traits. Of the first one (Unstrut and Sale region) presence of vessels identical to those known from the area of Przeworsk culture is typical. Within the second zone (central Elbe region and Gubin group) the specimens occur which are usually larger then original cups of type TD I. Second part of the paper is devoted to explanation of this phenomenon. Materials coming from four cemeteries represented both the Jastorf and Przeworsk culture were here the subject of more detailed analysis. It allows to draw the conclusion that observed change in size of TD I cups may be considered as a result of adaptation to the specific norms of burial custom. While in the area of Przeworsk culture cups usually served as a gift, being deposited within the burial pit, in the case of Jastorf culture they were used as container for charred bones. Because their capacity had to be fitted to the volume of remains deposited in them, the positive correlation between age of deceased and the size of cups can be observed.

The present article aims to scrutinize the translators’ strategic approaches to the third culture elements. The analysis is being conducted in the light of the translation modalities according to Żmudzki (2015a; 2015b): the possible fidelity to the source-text and the necessary freedom from the source-text. For this purpose the novel Rubber (1931) written by the Dutch writer Madelon Székely-Lulofs and its renderings into English (1933) by Gustaaf Johannes Renier and Irene Clephane and into German (1934) by Walther Hjalmar Kotas have been analysed. The confrontative analysis of the translation techniques used with regard to the third culture elements shows two different approaches of the translators. Furthermore, in case of the English rendering the question arises, whether the limit of the necessary freedom from the source-text has not been exceeded, i.e. whether the English version can still be considered a translation or rather an adaptation.

The article above presents the importance of Breslaw poet, actor and reciter Karl von Holtei on shaping local identity of Breslaw and Silesian inhabitants as well as his place in the local memory. After second edition of his Schlesiche Gedichte (1850) written in local dialect, and especially after his long artistic journey around Silesia (1860–1861) and permanent return to Breslaw (1865) Holtei won respect his compatriots. He became very well known and popular in Breslaw. Streets, squares and other topographic buildings in other Silesian towns and cities were named after Holtei already during his lifetime. Postcards with his portraits were published and just after his death, a monument was unveiled. After 1945, Holtei became a very important identification figure for expelled Silesian people in West Germany. However, Holtei was forgotten for many years in Polish Silesia, even though he wrote many pro-Polish pieces including Der alte Feldherr a drama about Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko. A breakthrough came only in the end of 20th century when Holtei’s importance for Polish-German relationship rediscovered and appreciated. A commemorative plaque was unveiled on the house that he had lived in, his bust was placed in Town Hall and secondary school in Oborniki Śląskie was given Holtei’s name.

Pictures/caricatures – as a part of culture are characteristic for a society (nation). In the process where different cultures get in touch pictures may play a role in teaching a foreign language. Introduction into an intercultural topic, intensive discussion – there are many possibilities for a teacher to show his/her students the life in a German-speaking country in its various facets. Caricatures can combine politics, society, religion, culture and sense of humour with an enrichment of the language used in classroom – at the same time supporting the development of the intercultural competence of the students.

Medieval Hanseatic merchants travelled to many places around Europe. It sounds trivial, but the fact that they were foreigners outside their own city-walls, caused many problems, i.a. in regard to their integration in the religious landscape abroad. To begin with, the following article shortly outlines the conditions of the pratique réligieuse of foreigners in the Orbis Catholicus. It shows what rules governed the life and death of foreigners in the religious sense, how and where Hanseatic merchants were allowed to attend masses, to confess and to take the holy communion; it also reveals what laws applied in the case of death in regard to the last unction and the burial. Secondly, the ways Hanseatic merchants handled different situations abroad were analysed. One may indicate their own chronological and geographical dimensions; the questions of power are also touched upon. It was stated that the Fourth Lateran Council of 1215 constituted a turning point, because it made the parish become a stable institution. Prior to 1215, merchants had been able to take their own priest with them or to establish their own churches abroad, as they were also later able to do this outside of the Orbis Catholicus. Nevertheless, after 1215 they had to adjust to the conditions inside the Catholic world, which made them adopt different approaches. If they were powerful enough, they could get their own parish churches or parish rights, like it was in the case of Visby, Riga, Bergen or the Scanian Fairs. Yet, it created new problems. If they were not powerful enough to have their own standing, they were integrated into the existing parishes abroad. There they tried to distinguish themselves by creating their own symbols or chapels inside the parish churches. However, it also caused complications, e.g. in the case of confession. How to confess and to get the absolution when the confessor did not understand the penitent? Mendicant orders could fill the gap, but this solution created even more problems. By taking a closer look at various areas of the Hanseatic trade, from Novgorod and Polotsk to London and Bruges, this article shows, in a more systematic manner, different solutions of the problems caused by ecclesiastical law and practical life. In the end, it can be shown that Hanseatic merchants abroad constituted an integral part of the sacred landscape of these foreign places, not only by using it, but also by actively shaping it. In this way, they were no longer foreigners abroad, but fratres Christiana.
