Robert Eduard Prutz (1816–1872), geboren in Stettin, Schriftsteller, Politiker, Publizist und Professor der Literaturgeschichte gehört zu den bedeutendsten deutschen Literaten des 19. Jahrhunderts. Seine Werke, populär in den Jahren 1840–1872, sind heute in Deutschland vergessen und in Polen nicht bekannt. Der Beitrag setzt sich zum Ziel, anhand ausgewählter literarischer Werke und theoretisch-wissenschaftlicher Erwägungen des Autors darauf hinzudeuten, in welchem Ausmaß Prutz’ Schaffen als Bestandteil des zeitgenössischen Diskurses über Gesellschaft, Politik und Literatur zu betrachten ist. Der Artikel versucht zugleich die Frage zu beantworten, auf welche gesellschaftlichen Prozesse sich Prutz’ Schaffen auswirkte, mit welchen Mitteln er dies erreichte und inwieweit seine kritische Haltung ein konstruktives Leitmotiv für seine dichterische Arbeit war. Darüber hinaus wird ein Teil seines expansiven Schaffens angesprochen, dessen Thema sein geliebtes Pommern ist.
Robert Eduard Prutz (1816–1872) pochodzący ze Szczecina pisarz, polityk, publicysta i profesor historii literatury należy do grona znaczących niemieckich literatów XIX wieku. Jego utwory, popularne w latach 1840–1870, są obecnie w Niemczech zapomniane, natomiast w Polsce nieznane. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie na podstawie wybranych utworów literackich oraz teoretyczno-naukowych rozważań autora, w jakim stopniu jego twórczość może być postrzegana jako element ówczesnego dyskursu o społeczeństwie, polityce i literaturze. Artykuł jest też próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, za pomocą jakich środków i na jakie społeczne procesy miała wpływ twórczość Prutza oraz w jaki sposób krytyczna postawa autora jest konstruktywnym motywem przewodnim w jego utworach. Ponadto artykuł omawia część ekspansywnej twórczości autora, której głównym tematem jest jego ukochane Pomorze.
Robert Eduard Prutz (1816–1872), a Szczecin-born writer, politician, essayist and history and literature professor, is considered to be an eminent 19th century German author. Although his works were popular in the years 1840-1870, they are nowadays forgotten in Germany, and completely unknown in Poland. The aim of this article is to show, on the basis of Prutz’s selected works and pieces of scholarship, the degree to which his work can be construed as a vital part of the then-discourse of society, politics and literature. The article also attempts to characterize the means Prutz uses in order to influence social processes and the ways in which the author’s critical stance becomes an effective structural motif in his works. Additionally, a specific part of the author’s expansive oeuvre will be touched upon, namely the few texts whose main theme is his beloved Pomerania.

Like all those pictures of other countries, which are treated in imagological research, images of Germany are also complex, mediated by social history and historical experience, misunderstanding, misrepresentation and ideological assumptions. On the whole, these images represent the expectations and experiences of the observer even as they can truly be connected with the history, or social and cultural affairs, of the population. Thus, these images appear to be reversible figures that are simultaneously true and the products of subjective perception.

The aim of this article is to analyze two novels, namely Nagrobek z lastryko(A Terrazzo Tomb) by Krzysztof Varga and Der Komet (The Comet). Despite the differ-ences that occur between the two novels (a dystopian version of the future in the former, and an alternative history in the latter), the predicted end of the world does not take place, while the apocalypse blurs. Equally resistant to change is also the existing societal structure as the catastrophe does not bring a new hierarchy. Both novels use the images of WWII as the pattern to create the literary vision of a total disaster.

Literaturgeschichte ist meistens die Geschichte des Kanons bzw. der zum Kanon zusammengestellten Reihe vermeintlich literarischer Spitzenprodukte einer gewissen Zeitperiode. Der literarische Kanon und seine Erforschung geht mit der Erforschung urbaner Strukturen und der literarisch-künstlerischen Zentren einher. Dagegen bleiben regionale Literaturen und die den Kanon weit überragende Menge an sonstigen literarischen Zeiterscheinungen weitgehend unberücksichtigt, woraus bloß verkürzte und verzerrte, fiktive wie falsche Epochenbeschreibungen resultieren. Der vorliegende Beitrag plädiert für eine proaktive Literaturgeschichte jenseits bzw. unterhalb des Kanons sowie für eine interdisziplinäre wie interkulturelle Erforschung der Literaturen des Ostseeraums.
Literary history is most often the history of the canon or a series of supposedly top literary works from a certain time period compiled into the canon. The literary canon and its study go hand in hand with the study of urban structures and literary-artistic centers. In contrast, regional literatures and the quantity of other literary publications of the time, which far exceed the canon, remain largely ignored, resulting in only abridged and distorted, fictitious and inaccurate descriptions of the period. This article argues for a proactive literary history above and beyond the canon as well as for an interdisciplinary and intercultural study of the literatures of the Baltic Sea region.

Ausgehend von Science-Fiktion-Texten aus Westdeutschland und den USA beschäftigt sich der Beitrag mit den Konsequenzen der fehlenden Wahrnehmbarkeit der Radioaktivität für die Imagination von mainstream-Texten. Gemeinhin wurde der epistemologische Bruch abgewehrt und literarisch an der Zurückgewinnung der Sinneswahrnehmungen gearbeitet. Die politische Bedeutung dieser Tendenz bestand in der Beruhigung von Ängsten, mit deren Hilfe man sonst des ‚prometheischen Gefälles‘ (Günther Anders) zwischen dem technisch Möglichen und der Phantasie hätte inne werden können.
Based on science-fiction texts from West Germany and the USA, the article deals with the consequences of the lack of perceptibility of radioactivity in the imagination of mainstream texts. In general, the epistemological break has been negated. Literary texts have tried to recover sensory perceptions. The political significance of this tendency has been the reassurance of fears that otherwise would have been inherent in the ‘Promethean gap’ (Günther Anders) between what is technically possible and imagination.

Am Beispiel der Pitavalgeschichte des Marquis de la Pivardiere ist der Beitrag der asymmetrischen Verhorsituation im Inquisitionsverfahren gewidmet1. Untersuchungsrichter und Protokollant verdichten die Aussagen der Magde des Marquis zu einer juristisch belastbaren Erzahlung des Tathergangs. Gezeigt wird, wie sich in der Fassungsgeschichte (Gayot de Pitaval, Friedrich Schiller, Neuer Pitaval) der Wandel zum reformierten Strafprozess spiegelt. Der in den Akten dokumentierte Manipulationsvorwurf dient bei Gayot zur Mahnung an eine formstrenge Durchfuhrung des Verfahrens, wahrend Schiller darin einen anthropologisch verwertbaren Einblick in die Psyche des Tatersubjekts erkennt. Der neue Pitaval disqualifiziert das Inquisitionsverfahren im Ganzen, um ihm die preu.ische Rechtspraxis entgegen zu stellen.
Using the cause célèbre of the Marquis de la Pivardiere, the article is dedicated to the asymmetrical situation in the inquisitorial hearings of witnesses. The inquisitor and the transcript condense the testimony of the Marquis’ maids into a legally usable narrative. It is shown how the individual versions of this story (Gayot de Pitaval, Friedrich Schiller, Neuer Pitaval) reflect the historical change to the reformed criminal process. In Gayot’s case, the accusation of manipulation documented in the records serves as an admonition to conduct the trial with strict formality, while Schiller recognises in it an anthropologically revealing insight into the psyche of the delinquent. Der Neue Pitaval disqualifies the inquisition procedure as a whole to oppose the Prussian legal practice.

Spreewald Forest. (On) The Smallest Slavonic People – The Sorbs and Wends Upper and Lower Lusatia with mountains in the Southern border region with the Czech Republic (Bohemia) and the natural and cultural water landscapes of the Spreewald Forest are the native lands of the Slavonic Sorbs and Wends with a unique history, language, and culture. The ancestor of the Sorbs and Wends came here in the 6th century, and both peoples are closely related to their Western Slavonic brethren, the Czechs and Poles. In their complicated history they had to experience persecution, assimilation, and displacement, language prohibition, deportation, and even extermination included. In their home regions the Sorbs have the right to speak Sorabian/Wendish today, in public, at school, and at court as well. The increasing industrialization provokes more and more calls and activities for the preservation of the unique scenery, and language and culture of the Sorbian minority. The maintenance of the rich culture, customs and traditions of the Sorbs and Wends was and is still an important aspect for their future existence, and self-preservation. They are kept alive in many regions, across language and cultural barriers. General knowledge on this ethnic and cultural minority is in Germany often reduced to customs and mere folklore. Although many Sorbs and Wends are Christians today, most of their cultural heritage, customs and legends are of pagan-originated, a challenging, and interesting offer. The rich culture, lively customs and traditions make the bilingual region a unique, interesting, and attractive place for many visitors that can experience a lot in the triangle border region of Saxony, Bohemia, and Silesia. They may follow the ancient trade route Via Regia as well as the holy route Via Sacra connecting the Lusatia region with important historic and cultural destinations in Poland and the Czech Republic. Interested guest may experience traditions alive, for instance they might follow the traces of Krabat, also called the “Wendish Faust” and main character of the most popular Sorabian/Wendish legend coming from this area. Traditions are part of a well-preserved history and cultural heritage, and they are an integrating practice in modern life of this region, and in policy, too.

Dante Alighieri plays an important role in Polish literature and generally speaking in the collective and individual memory and imagination of the Poles, too. That’s why we are dealing with a special kind of cultural, literary, artistic and linguistic expression with a strong impact on Polish affairs, called “Dantism”, comprising “Dantomania” as well as “Dantophobia”. Especially since the time of Romanticism Polish literature as well as culture and art were deeply influenced by Alighieri’s narrative drama The Divine Comedy (1308–1320), treated as a drama of “its own”. The Polish “Dantism” is also essential for the understanding of the philosophical and literary phenomenon of Polish messianism mainly within a threefold system: Heaven (God), Church, Evil which became a favorite theme of famous writers, poets, artists and painters up to the Polish theatre art in Poland. It was the descent into the netherworld of the last act of the Divine Comedy which fascinated a multitude of different literary works dealing not only with human beings involved in the eternal battle between God and Evil but also referring to the atrocities of two world wars, the holocaust, the two experienced totalitarian systems in the 20th century. That’s why many outstanding texts of Polish literature, art and theatre refer, cursorily, indirectly and directly so often to Dante and his Divine Comedy. In everyday Polish, the phrase “Dantesques scenes” (sceny dantejskie) became equivalent to “terrifying scenes”, “scary visions”, often combined with eternal topics like loneliness, tragedy of human existence, impossible love, human fears and nightmares. After a rather short stagnation due to stalinism in Poland with its hostile attitude towards “religious things”, also in literature and culture, we may speak of an outstanding and continuous presence of Dante in Poland in the shape of a widespread benevolent, critical and ultra-Catholic “Dantology” in a clear disproportion to the obvious presence of traditional “Dantism”.
