André Baillon, Georges Simenon, Eugene Savitzkaya and Jean-Philippe Toussaint: four Belgian novelists, while portraying precisely their time, ensure generally avoid the great History. They attach indeed to depict the everyday world of men, women and children of their time. But History sometimes appears suddenly and occupies a place unexpected. We try to see how, when and where.

Opis:
This article concerns the portrayal of the World War II in the Belgian literature on the basis of Les Jumeaux millénaires Maud Frère (1923-1979). Published in 1962, the novel is considered as one of few testimonies of German Occupation in Belgium, its influence on the post-war Belgian-Belgian conflicts (Quastion royale, 1940-1945) and the literary output (déshistoire). This autobiographic narration, full of bitterness and disappointment, portrays a literary and very subjective interpretation of this shameful, unsaid and often neglected period in the Belgian history.

Opis:
This article describes Yasmina Khadra’s autobiographical work composed of two books: "L’écrivain" and "L’imposture des mots" and its reception in France. The main purpose of this study was to establish the literary genre of these books, which implies determining whether Khandra’s work represents an autobiography or an autofiction with reference to P. Lejeune’s and V. Colonna’s theoretical studies. The dividing line between two genres in Khandra’s works reflects his inner split between being either a solder or a writer. The presentation will also help to understand the controversy resulting from Khandra’s participation in Algerian civil war. Moreover the analysis is related to modern Algerian history.

displaced memory
Opis:
Today’s studies on memory encourage multidirectional memory, which assumes the transdisciplinary perspective and permits new understanding of texts which address traumatic events of the previous century. This is so in the case of Evelyne Pollet (1905-2005). Her largely autobiographical novel Grandes vacances en Angleterre (1945) is a record of a Belgian refugee family’s stay in Great Britain during World War One. This would not be particularly interesting if it had not been for the fact that the author does it near the end of the second global conflict. Her return to the events of 1914 1918 is not coincidental. Pollet purposefully turns the reader’s attention away from the inglorious chapters of her biography, her close ties with the collaborators’ literary milieu, and her intensive editorial work during the occupation. Grandes vacances en Angleterre is an example of instrumental approach to the type of memory referred to ‘displaced memory’.

Opis:
The German invasion and occupation of Belgium in 1914-1918 deeply impacted the Belgian literary field. In many regards, the country’s political and linguistic evolution was also impacted by the war, although it cannot be reduced to its consequences. The imaginary that impregnated the first attempts of building a francophone literature in Belgium flickered due to the collapse of the Germanic myth that inspired the whole 19th Century. What may be called a “Latin shift”, which began with Maurice Maeterlinck, lead to a renewed subjugation to the French doxa, culminating with the Manifeste du lundi [Monday’s Manifesto]. Nevertheless, after the war and the Russian Revolution, the collapse of traditional values gives birth, on the one hand, to masterpieces by surrealist Paul Nougé, expressionist playwright Fernand Crommelynck or avant-gardist poet Henry Michaux. In all these masterpieces, it’s the nature of language itself that is questioned. For instance, Michaux’s “Lettre de Belgique” [“Letter from Belgium”] shows how the writer works with his Belgian roots in order to paradoxically keep them at bay. On the other hand, the “Fantastique réel” [“Fantastic Real”] tries to keep the language unspoiled by holding on to the Symbolist idealism and acknowledging the wounds of war at the same time, through sudden shifts from Realism to the Uncanny. There are traces of the conflict in literary texts, which were though forgotten by Literary History because of their realistic facture, despite their great efficiency without pathos.

During World War I, the ongoing conflict became the main subject of published stories for French youth. Children’s literature beginning to focus on short and educational stories while sharing these with adult literature themes like the exaltation of France and its allies as well as the demonization of the enemy. This article analyses stereotypical representations of the American ally (entry into the war in 1917) through two collections of French youth literature. Becauseof their function of reductive simplification, stereotypes serve as an effective tool for filtering reality by exploiting existing cultural representations.

14 is a recently published novel by a French contemporary writer, Jean Echenoz. Having the First World War as its core subject, the text covers the main traditional themes of war novels. Its interest, however, does not lie in what it says about the war, but rather in how the war is told. In fact, 14 points out the main horrors of the war, without engaging in pathos. In order to do so, Echenoz resorts to two groups of techniques, whose main purpose is to lighten the dramatic effect of the war scenes depicted. Surprisingly, the result is a text which recounts the crude horrors of war.
