Opis:
Imaginary genres have always played with language and lexicon in order to build their worlds. The science fiction genre, in particular, creates a lexicon on the borderline between literary creation and scientific and technical terminology so the stories can be framed elsewhere or in the future. The translation of these invented words can be a real challenge for translators because of their very nature as hybrids, but also because of the science fictional megatext. The translation treatment from English into French of these neologisms, known as “fiction terms”, shows different strategies of lexical (re)creation. Following a terminological approach, this paper presents a contrastive analysis of lexical creation strategies and morpho- syntactic structures between the two languages on a list of science fictional terms from the audiovisual field and extracted from a corpus of science fiction novels.

Opis:
Rotifers and tardigrades, microscopic animals discovered in the 18th century, have exceptional abilities to survive in hostile conditions. Exposing them to desiccation, extreme temperatures, and vacuum, scientists wanted to determine whether these animals die and revive, or whether they preserve a trace of life in these lethal conditions. The question of boundaries of life had been the subject of scientific controversy throughout the 19th century, an example of which was the debate between L. Doyère and F.-A. Pouchet in the late 1850s. Its echoes can be found in E. About’s science-fiction novel L’Homme à l’oreille cassée (1861), in which tardigrades’ ability to revive is extrapolated to humans.

Opis:
The French fantastic literature of the first half of the 19 century is a hybrid genre (theoretical works of Charles Nodier, Didier de Hauranne, Jean-Jacques Ampère, Walter Scott). Toward the second half and the end of the 19th century the pure fantastic appears and dominates over other genres. However, in the 20th century some French writers revive the fantastic hybrid mode of writing. This is the case of Jean-Pierre Andrevon and her transgeneric novel Une lumière entre les arbres. The presence and the constant mix of many genres (like the fantastic, the gore, the Science fiction, the techno thriller, the horror) within the same novel enriches this text and does not destroy the effect of the pure fantastic because the hesitation, the ambiguity and the playing with fear are clearly visible in the contents and the writing technique. The future of the fantastic is paradoxically related to the return of its past.

Opis:
The 19th-century French press abounded in short stories of a utopian nature. On examination, these "short utopias", with authors often unknown or anonymous (at times due to famous journalists using pen names, turn out to be witnesses of the political thought of the moment: sometimes reflecting major utopian currents, sometimes extravagant, sometimes at odds with the political situation imposed by authoritarian regimes. Their diversity forces one to ask questions. Their frequent presence in popular almanacs, their publication in entertainment and satirical press (Le Charivari, Le journal amusant, and Le journal pour rire contain them in great numbers), their frequent juxtaposition to amusing illustrations without political aim, or on the contrary their presence even in the daily political press, legitimately make them enter what has been called "the civilization of the newspaper".

Opis:
Under the deep impression of the 20th century’s worst excesses and sheer horror, Robert Merle, an engaged, humanist novelist, comes to question the humanity of man. As a popular novelist he imprints this reaction on fashionable genres, such as science fiction and dystopia, in which dolphins Fa and Bi are more informed than the humans (An Animal Endowed with Reason/ The Day of the Dolphin 1967), a species that is not really worth perpetuating (The Protected Men/ The Virility Factor, 1974). In 1972, in Malevil, Merle veers towards post-apocalyptic fiction, imagining a nuclear catastrophe that has brought man back to a primary condition; it is a situation that allows him to conceive of the political and moral crisis at the heart of the city. Beyond this classical revealing function, though, the crisis heuristics brings Merle face to face with the blind spots of his ideological reference, so that the text eventually puts in a crisis situation the very progressive positions exhibited by the author, curbing the text to the reactionary positions of a Bajavel in Ravage/ Ashes, Ashes (1943).
