- Ghislain Brunel's book “Sources to the history of Poland and Poles in the French Archives” (Les Sources de l’histoire de la Pologne et des Anglais dans les archives françaises, the Direction des Archives de France, 2003) is a mine of information, especially to the history of the city of Gdańsk. However the records from the holdings of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (formerly located at the Quay d’Orsay and today available in the new buildings La Courneuve, north of Paris) were in principle left out. Political correspondence between the French monarchy and the city of Gdańsk (‘Danzig‘ as then it was spelled) of the modern era was voluminous and generally applied to the 18th c. The first volume concerns only the 17th c., exactly the years 1629–1660. Despite the gaps and unusual nature of this volume, it demonstrates the importance that was laid by the French monarchy on this grand port on the Vistula River (there are important French diplomats mentioned, for example, the French consul in Gdańsk Henri de Canasilles). Port in Gdańsk was necessary point of supply with corn, that was needed by France periodically. Additionally, the city of Gdańsk was a very important place to conduct diplomacy and collect news of Northern and Eastern Europe. This was confirmed by the representatives of France in their letter; nonetheless, they considered it unnecessary to stress the importance of Gdańsk, because it was known to their correspondents. These documents give a sufficiently precise picture of difficult relations between the independent city of Gdańsk and kings of Poland.
