Opis:
The paper aims to discuss the means of expressing and inferring emotions using as an example the lexical and iconic layers of the blogosphere of the French Outraged movement. The analysis is based on a corpus of content taken from a dozen blogs written in France between 2010 and 2013. In the course of the analysis based on theoretical assumptions of modern discourse and argumentation analysis, the author concludes that the expression of outrage in the texts under investigation is a kind of emotional form which the active co-authors of the blogs actualize in their own manner and by doing so they create not so much pathos but rather ethos – both individual and communal, based on a system of shared values and beliefs. On the other hand, argumentation through emotions usually takes place indirectly, mostly by means of axiologically charged subjectification of discourse.

The lecture engages the debate concerning the relation between politics and ethics. Ethics is the guardian of good practice and policy the guardian of the quality of life in the community. The author discusses their mutual historical development paying special attention to two dates. First in 1789, when the Bastille was demolished and the Republic founded with a slogan of ethical content (“Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”), but only in order to control it. The second date is 1989, the year in which the Berlin Wall fell, constitutes a turning point and the dominance of ethics over politics promoted by the triad: democracy, accountability, and human rights, which undoubtedly belong to the highest value. The problem with this is that ethical values can be used in an ideological way. In the final section, the Christian position on the proper relationship between ethics and policy and vice versa is discussed.

Indignation in the political discourse has a long rhetoric tradition because of its moral aspect. This article focuses on the discursive construction of this emotion by French politicians in their communiqué posted on officials websites and on their twitter. It will be asked (1) how expression of indignation affects discursive structure, (2) how it can be inferred referring to our stereotypes, (3) how the emotional involvement contributes to positive ethos of politicians. Our analysis is based on the study of emotion in discourse proposed by Ch. Plantin (2011), the notion of subjectivity in language (C. Kerbrat-Orecchioni 1980) and the concept of ethos D. Maingueneau (1999).

Opis:
The present paper attempts to give an otline of the expressiveness of the discourse encountered in the mass media. Examples are drawn from selected Polish and French periodicals retrieved from the Internet: le Monde, Libération, Tribune, Newsweek, Gazeta Wyborcza. The political stance of these titles is characterized alongside. Main focus is laid on headlines which on account of their localization usually abound most with conspicuous discursive effects, including the ones having specifically expressive character. A priviledged position of the mass media in approaching real life problems is discussed first. Then, various wording techniques implemented in press titles are subject to a thorough analysis. Expressiveness and establishing a particular ranking of values are viewed as two concurrent and close-knit phenomena. Furthermore, expressiveness is shown to reflect current political trends and to comply with main characters of political regime in a given community. Finally, examples exhibiting a high degree of expressive markedness are analyzed. Their peculiar linguistic features result, among others, from delexicalization, NPs exhibiting a strong axiological bias, and neologisms.

The aim is to describe the potential of these formulas in the context of constructing the collective identity. The authors continue the debate undertaken in the previous publication (Dyoniziak & Pirogowska, 2023) and show on the basis of 1000 presidential speeches written on www.prezydent.pl that the proper name Rzeczpospolita has greater identity potential than the name Polska in creating a national community.

This study is based upon discursive and logometric analysis of the political speeches delivered by the candidates during the campaign and pre-campaign phases of the 2012 presidential elections in France, taking into account the results of previous studies related to the 2007 presidential elections. The present paper aims at tracing the different representations of the speaker within his own speeches and at analyzing the way he verbalizes himself in his campaign by observing the use, the distribution, the role and the possible impact of “I” and of the other personal pronouns within the frame of political communication. The analysis of statistical data tends to emphasize syntactic as well as morphological, stylistic, lexical, and gramatical distinctive features of the speeches delivered by the candidates to the presidential elections, especially in relation with the new possibilities conveyed by internet.

Opis:
The paper examines the relation of esotericism and oblique politics in the Byzantine philosopher Michael Psellos (11th century) on the basis of Eva De Vries’ study of the letters that Psellos addressed to the statesman Leo Paraspondylos. Traditionally, the name of Psellos signifies a revival of Neoplatonism in medieval Constantinople according to researchers like Chr. Zervos in the beginning of 20th century. Contemporary researchers such as Anthony Kaldellis and Stratis Papaioannou point to a more organic than speculative theorization in Psellos’ work while another contemporary scholar, Frederick Lauritzen, undertakes a synthesis of the two approaches. In any case, as this paper supports, it would be inadequate to consider the relation of esotericism to politics without referring to the evolution of the moral standards considered in a contextualized manner.

This article explores the substitution of words considered as offensive that designate marginalized and stigmatized social groups over time. The substitutions, framed in the politically correct discourse, are renamings that go against certain traditional naming ways perceived by a broad social sector as obsolete, according to an ideology which tries to remove from the vocabulary everything implying discrimination, to promote an orthodoxy of moderation and reduce the linguistic inequality in the way of referring to the strong and the weak. Thus the speaker stands between the need for freedom of expression and that of adopting ethical conduct.

Opis:
The language of politics, the medium of ideological presentation of the idea of relations inside a given community is an area of discourse struggle. This means that apart from the offered meanings, there are also attempts to hide the competitive or unassimilable message in it. Thus, taboo is its inseparable element. Today’s public discourse is full of meta-language remarks in which the word taboo appears explicitly or is semantically present in the form of allusions to all sorts of forbidden themes. Through the analysis of contexts in which a word appears in the corpus of public speeches, the paper attempts to prove that, along with the criticism of Newspeak and political correctness, meta-language rejection of taboo by a political opponent has been a kind of a popular rhetoric pattern for the last few years.

Between 1871 and 1872, the cartoonist Paul Hadol published in the satirical weekly Le Charivari, eleven loaded portraits forming a series entitled La Mythologie politique. This article first places the series against the backdrop of the pre-existing tradition of iconographic parody of antiquity that began in England at the end of the 18th century, before being adopted in France during the July Monarchy. We then question the biographical criteria for the selection of the caricatured celebrities, and the potential thematic coherence of the series based on the typology of mythological filters – the cycle of Troy, the Olympian deities, heroes, monsters. Finally, the more specifically semiotic analysis of the caricatures highlights the resumption of the process associating big-head and versified legend with the two series of the Charivaric Pantheon (1838-1841 and 1866-1867), the dimension of political rebus, and the game of artistic, literary and even musical quotes. The conclusion shows that the scope of the series can be considered from a political and artistic point of view, but also intellectually in relation to the time which it concerns.

Translation of political discourse is one of specialized translation central issues. In this kind of translation, not only are translators required to be familiar with both terminology and phraseology of the field in question, they are also compelled to be a walking encyclopedia due to the diversity of topics that could be dealt with in such texts. Thus, the translation of political discourse proves to be an uphill battle putting a huge responsibility on the translator’s shoulders who must be ultracautious when trying to choose the most appropriate and accurate equivalents, for such texts are highly sensitive and any tiny mistake can lead to conflicts, even wars, between nations. The scope of this paper is to examine the process of this type of translation and explore the dilemma of whether or not to consider the translation of political discourse as a kind of specialized translation.

Opis:
This paper examines how the Front National’s electoral victories could be explained, partially, in terms of a new discursive rhetoric adopted by Marine Le Pen. In order to compare rhetorical strategies used by both Marine and Jean-Marie Le Pen and their impact on their followers, we use comparable data, which consist of press articles published during the presidential campaigns of each politician and postings by online discussants related to interviews. Using corpus linguistics tools and lexical semantics, we assess how differently both leaders position themselves emotionally and how this emotional positioning is reconstructed within the postings of the viewers. Although no important quantitative difference can be observed in the number of emotion key-words they used respectively, a shift in both politicians’ rhetoric positioning can be observed when analyzing the context in which these keywords are embedded. If Jean-Marie Le Pen focuses on negative feelings towards the Other (anger, resentment), Marine Le Pen promotes a positive ethos (empathy) in order to detoxify the image of her party and broaden her electoral base.
