Opis:
Ernest Renan’s Vie de Jésus [Life of Jesus] was an extraordinary scandal, a literary event. The book is often compared to Victor Hugo’s Misérables [The Wretched], one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. Renan’s work seeks to be scientific, but it is frequently considered to be a masterpiece of literature: Renan uses (and abuses) images, poetic imagination, aesthetic reflections, sensitive handwriting… What if the Life of Jesus was really a novel?

Opis:
Camus complements his novels with long peritexts, thus using his ecclesiastic authority to legitimise their moral and didactic value. In these peritexts he juxtapposes the licentious novels with his own devout works of fiction, which are, in his own words, not only valuable and worth recommending, but also capable of saving the readers’ souls, put in danger by other texts. In any case, a close reading of these peritexts reveals a view which challenges the idea of the novel’s insidiousness and which bears witness to Camus’s great fascination with this officially condemned literary genre.

Fantastic literature

Opis:
The French fantastic literature of the first half of the 19 century is a hybrid genre (theoretical works of Charles Nodier, Didier de Hauranne, Jean-Jacques Ampère, Walter Scott). Toward the second half and the end of the 19th century the pure fantastic appears and dominates over other genres. However, in the 20th century some French writers revive the fantastic hybrid mode of writing. This is the case of Jean-Pierre Andrevon and her transgeneric novel Une lumière entre les arbres. The presence and the constant mix of many genres (like the fantastic, the gore, the Science fiction, the techno thriller, the horror) within the same novel enriches this text and does not destroy the effect of the pure fantastic because the hesitation, the ambiguity and the playing with fear are clearly visible in the contents and the writing technique. The future of the fantastic is paradoxically related to the return of its past.

Opis:
For Atiq Rahimi, the Afghan-born Prix Goncourt winner French-language writer, belonging to two different cultures and languages is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Therefore, it is no coincidence that all his works are based on some form of hybridity (cultural, genre, identity, language, etc.). The analysis of Rahimi’s novel titled Syngué Sabour (2008) shows that the main organising element of the text is its genre hybridity. The present study aims to investigate the contribution of this hybridity to French literature. The analysis has a double objective: firstly, it seeks to unfold the various intertwining art. forms (theatre, cinema, music) and writing modes (stage direction-like mode of writing, cinematographic mode of writing, minimalist prose) embedded in each other. Secondly, it examines in what ways the novel combines the poetic and narrative features of the Western minimalist novel with the symbolic and allegorical layers of meaning of Eastern tales. Finally, the study attempts to determine the functions of the genre hybridity resulting from the intercultural and transcultural features of the corpus and to detect the additional layers of meaning that the genre hybridity provides in the novel.

The youth language located in the suburbs since the ’90s finds its place in the contemporary novel. The authors chosen for analysis focus on sentiment constraints that adolescents confront in the suburbs with its codes and rites. The research in gender studies reveals a tension between the adolescent’s feeling of love that is difficult to confess and the sexual act associated with a taboo transgression for the girls and manifestations of masculinity for the boys. The boys tend to engage in sexually aggressive behavior, and hide or dominate their feelings seen as a weakness. The girls feel ashamed and guilty about their sexuality because of men’s dominant position and the violence against them. In order to get freedom and respect, the girls become as virile as the boys. The theme of love is relatively new in the representation of suburbs that are no longer considered only as a place of violence, insecurity, and conflict but also as a complex universe of relationships.
