As a fully committed writer, Boualem Sansal has “stepped in literature as he would have put on a combat gear”, to dismantle poisonous myths that prevent, for him, post-independent Algeria to look dispassionately into the future. Mobilizing all possible resources to fulfil his purpose, he logically turns towards self-narrative, which undertaken subjectivity is used as an answer to the falsification of objective historic by the ruling political power. The way Boualem Sansal re-appropriate self-narration, strongly strengthening the role played by the reader, makes his literary work a radically renewed approach of the relation between fiction and reality.

Opis:
Ian Rankin’s world-famous crime series features as a main character the city of Edinburgh, where Inspector Rebus relentlessly wanders, drives, drifts, tails and chases suspects. In each novel, the narrative visits a number of referential locations and examines them through the prism of time, slowly building a diachronic map of the city. As the series spans more than thirty years, the urban locus evolves as the narrative unfolds. Ian Rankin takes stock of new urban developments in real time and draws on them to feed his plots. Piecing a map together therefore remains a work in progress, and the literary geography of Edinburgh gazes out at an endlessly elusive horizon.

The Red Steppe of Joseph Kessel is a valuable work, insofar as it is mainly characterized by its generic hybridity. The six novellas oscillate between the biographical and autobiographical, between history and fiction, between the individual and the collective, between the current and the universal. A sort of juxtaposition and/or co-existence can be traced between the novella of Kessel and other literary genres such as the travelogue, the initiation story, the adventure story, the historical narrative and the fictional narrative. This interdiscursive report makes the historical text an open text, "a hybrid text."

In 1975, Georges Perec published W ou le souvenir d’enfance, a work that is both fictional and autobiographical, and in which there are two different systems of enunciation side by side, thus opposing the distinction drawn by Gérard Genette between fiction and diction. In his book, Perec shows this undecidability between the imperative of narrating that which he hasn’t lived and the complete impossibility of such narrative. By developing a narration strategy based on a certain use of fiction, Perec tries to face his lack of memories. This paper aims at analyzing how these two systems operate in order to create a double space where author and narrator get mixed up, creating a game in which the subject can only exist at the risk of his complete dissolution.

Dominique Fernandez is the author of a method of analysis for artists and their works that he calls “psychobiography”. It establishes parallels between the analysis of works and events in the life of an artist, insisting on the identification of a childhood trauma that left an indelible mark on the style of the artist. In this article we show how he applies this method in his biographical novels: La course à l’abîme, Tribunal d’honneur and Dans la main de l’ange. We analyze the way in which biographemes are reconstituted in order to give a coherent vision of the biographee. We emphasize the thin line that separates reality from fiction, or biography from novel.

Opis:
Under the deep impression of the 20th century’s worst excesses and sheer horror, Robert Merle, an engaged, humanist novelist, comes to question the humanity of man. As a popular novelist he imprints this reaction on fashionable genres, such as science fiction and dystopia, in which dolphins Fa and Bi are more informed than the humans (An Animal Endowed with Reason/ The Day of the Dolphin 1967), a species that is not really worth perpetuating (The Protected Men/ The Virility Factor, 1974). In 1972, in Malevil, Merle veers towards post-apocalyptic fiction, imagining a nuclear catastrophe that has brought man back to a primary condition; it is a situation that allows him to conceive of the political and moral crisis at the heart of the city. Beyond this classical revealing function, though, the crisis heuristics brings Merle face to face with the blind spots of his ideological reference, so that the text eventually puts in a crisis situation the very progressive positions exhibited by the author, curbing the text to the reactionary positions of a Bajavel in Ravage/ Ashes, Ashes (1943).

Opis:
Being an author whose main struggle has been to track down relentlessly ready-for-use thought structures, the use of literary topoï is far from being self-evident for Boualem Sansal. That’s why the appearance of a topos in his novels is always the sign of a thoughtful aesthetic and ethic choice. Thus, great literary topoï of 17th and 18th centuries novels embodies, in his mind, the golden age of a fully potent fiction. Dealing with a harsh reality and expected to complete french readership expectations of documentary sources, Boualem Sansal’s work constantly intends to reassert the role of a fiction that has been too much tamed, for him, in modern literary aesthetics. That’s the way we can understand his occasional but meaningful use of topoï.

In life narratives, authors unveil their lives, and autobiography also inspires authors from Muslim Arab societies. In contemporary societies, some authors have talked about their “ego” without fully revealing all their secrets. Things are more complex in a Maghrebian context in which disclosing and recounting one’s life (childhood, adolescence or even adult life) becomes a vital act. Our reasoning in this paper consists in showing that, to Malika Mokeddem, despite the criticisms and taboos, writing and being emancipated are no impediments; on the contrary, these taboos or proscriptions have motivated and served her life choices. Algerian authors often write about themselves by referring to their childhood, education and readings. Often the history of their country is at the center of their autobiographical novels. In this article, we focus on Malika Mokeddem’s childhood and adolescence, two very important periods for her, and proceed to analyze the different processes used by the novelist who in her autobiographical works seeks to “recover” her identity.

Pierre Mertens’ novel Les éblouissements, published in 1987, is a fictionalised biography of a famous German poet Gottfried Benn, who made the biggest mistake of his life agreeing to support the National Socialist regime during several months. Mertens reconstructs the poet’s life trying to understand the reasons of his commitment, considered by the intellectuals of that time to be a betrayal. Mertens’ text is an illustration of the relationship between the individual and the historical past and, at the same time, an example of problemising the biographical factor in relation to Great History. Playing with the double signification of the word ‘éblouissement’, the novelist offers his own interpretation of the German poet’s double life.

Conrad Detrez is undoubtedly one of Belgium’s most important writers of the 70s of the 20th century. After having translated Brazilian revolutionary authors, he resumed the review of his provincial past, named «hallucinating autobiography». His first autofictional novel Ludo (1974) bring to life his first Belgian years in his native land where the inundation invades everything, the incessant rain causes floods and the river enters the houses. With excellent wit, Detrez’s scalpel-pen dissects characters and situations through which such topics as friendship, everyday marginal life and panic of people during the Second World War. Through selffiction, Detrez´s novel present the author and narrator’s obsessions.

“Night has enshrouded my childhood” write Jorge Semprun. Civil War and exile have erased any trace of the childhood he spent in Madrid. What was left to the writer were only flashes of memory and an old picture of his mother. Jorge Semprun was eight years of age when his mother died of septicemia. Through writing, thirty years later, he was able to evoke her death, but how was he to tell about her absence? Between fiction and reality, five of Jorge Semprun’s novels recreate his childhood. His mother will first of all be an absence or an implicit presence behind his relating the city of his childhood. Having set the scene, ghostly characters whose identities are undefined but whose discourses become more and more outlined will appear. The mother will become a nostalgic absence. Her features, her character will be sketched out. Jorge Semprun will move forward hiding behind the multiple identities of his characters and the freedom which fiction provides him. It will be up to the last character, a fictive double of the writer, to find the last traces of a mother who has turned into a haunting presence.

In Khalil, Yasmina Khadra paints a realistic portrait of a terrorist. This novel written in 2018 and developed from a real fact, blurs the spaces of reality and fiction to reveal the apparently unavowable thoughts of a jihadist. It is this detour strategy that this article will seek to clarify. It will be a question of studying how Yasmina Khadra organizes a scrambling of these two worlds, the fictional space and the realistic space, located at the edge of each other, to make them interact, confront each other but also to question.

The 19th-century French press abounded in short stories of a utopian nature. On examination, these "short utopias", with authors often unknown or anonymous (at times due to famous journalists using pen names, turn out to be witnesses of the political thought of the moment: sometimes reflecting major utopian currents, sometimes extravagant, sometimes at odds with the political situation imposed by authoritarian regimes. Their diversity forces one to ask questions. Their frequent presence in popular almanacs, their publication in entertainment and satirical press (Le Charivari, Le journal amusant, and Le journal pour rire contain them in great numbers), their frequent juxtaposition to amusing illustrations without political aim, or on the contrary their presence even in the daily political press, legitimately make them enter what has been called "the civilization of the newspaper".

If the presence of extracts from the life of the author (Paul Auster) allows us to postulate the “autobiographical” project of the memorial writing, others on the contrary confer it with a fictive project. The use of a stratagem of increased self-distancing and the multiple “mise en abyme” of identities leaves us puzzled as to the existence of an autobiographical scheme specific to Auster’s creation. Through the many forms of auctorial disguises, games of duplication, selfreflective mirroring, identity usurpation and handwritten possession, memorial writing integrates the different autobiographies of others. These are transformed into a functionalized or “real” autobiography of a subject who is a narrator, a character and an author.
