Formula plombier polonais in the press discourse The object of this study, based on the theoretical framework of French Discourse Analysis, is the expression plombier polonais (Polish plumber) circulating in the press discourse since 2005. The aim of the paper is to describe this expression in regard to four properties of the formula proposed by Alice Krieg-Planque (2009). The subsequent sections of the study, are meant to (1) examine the stability of the form of the expression plombier polonais and compare it with the degree of fixation of similar expressions, (2) present that the formula plombier polonais results from language practice and not from the language system, (3) observe its nature as social referant and (4) analyze the polemical dimension of the expression plombier polonais.

The aim of this article is to examine the social meaning of two proper names – Russie and Pologne – in French press discourse. Assuming that the social meaning of a given concept is constructed in the nomination process, it seems justified to examine the ways proper names – traditionally considered to be associated with specific referents – receive their social meaning through the act of nomination. The study of social meaning seems possible with the reconstruction of the so-called designational paradigm, which is a list of reformulations of the initial word. This study deals with two kinds of reformulations of country names: those that derive from a geopolitical vocabulary and those that derive from a geographical vocabulary. Comparing the role and functioning of these, we can assume that they serve two different discursive strategies: the westernisation of Russia and the orientalisation of Poland. The observation of the role and the function of these reformulations shows that the social meaning of both geographical names is no more than a discursive construct.

This article presents a thorough study of dislocation of superlative inferiority adjective dialogic function. The hypothesis of work stipulates that the dislocation is dialogic because the dislocated theme implies a relationship with a prior utterance by another enunciation. This relationship between two utterances is based on a comparison and makes dislocation a dialogic marker.

The aim of this paper is to present my ongoing PhD research project concerning the social meaning construction in thanatological discourse. The project is in line with the research principles of the French school of discourse analysis, which places press discourse at the center of interest (cf. Moirand 2007, Veniard 2013). The representatives of this school of thought show that the mass media, being an intermediary of information for a given linguistic community, influence the way the community perceives the world. Therefore, the media, including mainstream press, by using certain nominations in repetitive way, imprint them in the discursive memory of a given community. The media name people, objects, phenomena and events in order to explain major crises and to assign them a place in the usual order of things (cf. Siblot 1997, 2001, Veniard 2013). The nomination takes place in an anaphoric network that ensures the coherence of the text. In our view, the contribution of anaphora, especially nominal anaphora, to the production of meaning in thanatological discourse is fundamental. We will show that anaphoric relations are not based on linguistic parameters (e.g. lexical relations), but on the discoursive memory of a given community.

The paper describes typography as one of the mechanisms contributing to the construction of social meanings.According to the French discourse analysis, we assume that social meaning results from the nomination activity, which involves multiple and diverse naming of one element of the real world. Obtaining social meaning is possible by recreating the so-called designational paradigm, i.e. establishing a list of regular reformulations of the initial word introduced by metalanguage (definitional sentences), coordination, diaphors and typography. This work mainly focuses on the latter. The subsequent parts of the article discuss the impact of the comma, colon, parentheses, double dash and quotation marks on meaning construction. The description of each of them is complemented by examples derived from the study on the social meaning of the proper name Pologne (Poland), created and disseminated by the French press. It turns out that the typographic symbols are not a simple visual representation of pauses or intonation. They also have a semantic and pragmatic role. Typography signals the reformulations (comma, colon, parenthesis, dash), introduces the secondary predicates (comma, dash) and allows a journalist to distance him/herself from the created meanings (quotation marks).

Internet visitors, having found this instrument of global communication, have discovered a new field of verbal battles where they can release their emotions, expressing completely anonymously views. The Internet has changed the image of debate, and of polemic discussion, which earlier was an exchange of replies, and now thanks to forums and “reactions”, a “bath of opinions” has manifest, where everyone can add his two cents. The commentary we would like to present in this work are the reactions of the readers of the website www.lequipe.fr who after each article had the opportunity to express their arguments and their reactions to the article they had read.

This study is based upon discursive and logometric analysis of the political speeches delivered by the candidates during the campaign and pre-campaign phases of the 2012 presidential elections in France, taking into account the results of previous studies related to the 2007 presidential elections. The present paper aims at tracing the different representations of the speaker within his own speeches and at analyzing the way he verbalizes himself in his campaign by observing the use, the distribution, the role and the possible impact of “I” and of the other personal pronouns within the frame of political communication. The analysis of statistical data tends to emphasize syntactic as well as morphological, stylistic, lexical, and gramatical distinctive features of the speeches delivered by the candidates to the presidential elections, especially in relation with the new possibilities conveyed by internet.

In recent years, the Internet has become a place where a new type of users, the “outraged”, have the opportunity to express themselves anonymously on any subject. They take advantage of it to propagate hate just for pleasure. This kind of verbal abuse, which we will consider as a new act of speech, already occupies an important place in the community of web users. This research will examine the hate speech of French football fans, in order to analyze their ways of expressing themselves. It seems that verbal hate is characteristic of younger people, the generation not shocked by the deviant “trolling” behaviors. Hate is expressed in most cases with insults, but it seems to us that it is not the lexemes and their semantic content that play the preponderant role, but above all the context and co-text of the utterances produced by Internet users. Arriving at the definition of the hate phenomenon will be one of the main objectives of this study. We will try to prove that this concept is not identical to those already well-defined, like insults, curses, valves, etc. The hate phenomenon will be illustrated with several examples taken from a corpus of French and Polish comments.

The article analyzes the way in which the modern car-advertisement defines the identity of women as potential purchasers – to whom it is designed to get through. The research includes language and iconic instruments by which this type of advertisement aims to create a feminized market of products formerly recognized as traditionally masculine. The identification of the addressee of each publicity material might be subsumed under a set of stereotypes, thus enabling advertisers to get across their message using the code of addressee’s own values. The present paper concentrates on the linguistic specifity of the ads for high-tech goods (automobiles) targeting the feminine public and eventually points out their high degree of markedness according to the sex of addressees. Discourse analysis and a closer look at linguistic means appearing in French, Spanish and Polish automotive commercials both reveals a stereotyped woman’s image and shows how they happen to perpetutate it.

With the development of political communication over the Internet, a growing number of the French politicians are posting online their New Year’s Messages, which have been so far a genre of political discourse reserved for the President. These speeches have a similar pattern, which apart from wishes include an evaluation of the passing year and plans for the future. This is so, because the New Year’s Messages have primarily a persuasive function, and serve the purpose of strengthening the addressees’ group identity by reminding them of common values. However, while the President’s speech is strongly ritualized and emotionally balanced – as it is addressed to the whole nation – the online speeches are not subject to certain conventions, which allows the politicians to adjust the tone of their speech to the expectations of their supporters. Therefore a whole range of feelings is applied – from the fear of France falling, to national pride – depending on the political aims which are to be achieved. This article makes an attempt at answering the question in which way these emotions are constructed within the speeches, and which persuasive function they embody. The author adopts the perspective of argument analysis in discourse (Amossy, 2000; Plantin, 2011), which perceives emotions as a rhetoric means (pathos) whose aim is to influence the addressee.

Le nom propre participe à un acte de langage, régi par des conventions sociales et fondé sur un acte de nomination qui renvoie à un particulier qu’il individualise. Les critéres traditionnels avancés pour le distinguer du nom commun et prédire son fonctionnement dit marginal ne sont pas suffisants pour le définir en tant que catégorie linguistique et encore moins en tant que phénoméne du discours. Nous considérons le Npr dans un cadre plus général, comme une facette de la nomination, processus dynamique en discours où nous pouvons étudier ses fonctions discursives et ses différents types d’emplois contextuels dans le genre médiatique de la presse écrite envisagé comme genre discursif dans la tradition de l’École française de l’analyse du discours.
The proper name corresponds to a speech act, ruled by social conventions and founded by a nomination act which refers to a particular individual. The traditional criteria used to distinguish it from the common noun and to predict its said marginal functioning are not sufficient to define it as a linguistic category and even less so as a speech phenomenon. We consider the proper name in a more general frame, as a facet of the nomination, dynamic process in discourse where one can study its discursive functions and its different types of uses in context in a specific media genre, the written press, considered as a discursive genre in the tradition of the Ecole française of discourse analysis.

Dans le cadre de la méthode d’analyse de discours, nous avons abordé le discours scientifique à partir d’un terme-pivot appartenant au discours médical, à savoir “la migraine”, afin de comparer le mode d’approche des termes scientifiques dans les divers types de ce discours. Nous nous sommes principalement basée sur deux concepts, celui de la reformulation et celui du paradigme désignationnel. Ainsi avons-nous pu mettre en évidence à la fois les spécificités du discours de vulgarisation et les traits qu’il partage avec les autres types de discours scientifique. Nous avons pu constater que la reformulation qui est une réécriture d’un discours source est un outil fondamental du discours scientifique visant à expliciter les termes scientifiques. Nous avons également mis en relief le lien entre le cadre énonciatif et la reformulation des termes spécialisés. De même, nous avons donné une illustration de l’opposition langue/discours.
In the light of the discourse analysis approach, the researcher analyzes scientific discourse at the lexical level. The aim is to compare the different ways scientific terms are used in the diverse types of speech. The research is built on two key concepts: “reformulation” and “paradigm d´esignationnel”. Distinctive features of the popularization discourse and the traits it shares with other types of scientific discourse were highlighted. Reformulation, a rewrite of a source speech, is found to be a fundamental tool in scientific discourse used to explain scientific terms. The link between the enunciative frame and the reformulation of specialized terms is highlighted and an illustration for the opposition between language and speech is also given.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the use of taboos in social advertising, particularly of those aiming at raising the awareness of the general public on sexually transmitted diseases and other life threatening diseases, on physical or verbal violence and on deadly accidents. Thus, the article will examine the use of the somber irony in social marketing as it results from a corpus of slogans, posters, videoclips of social campaigns published on francophone and Polish sites between 1995 and 2006.
Nous proposons d’analyser le recours aux domaines tabouisés dans la publicité sociétale visant la sensibilisation du public aux infections sexuellement transmissibles ainsi qu’aux autres dangers menaçant la santé, à la violence physique ou verbale et aux accidents mortels. La contribution aura pour l’objet d’examiner l’emploi de l’ironie sombre dans la publicité sociétale à partir d’un corpus constitué par des slogans, des affiches et des clips vidéo des campagnes de sensibilisation relevées sur les sites francophones et polonais entre 1995 et 2016.
