Opis:
It is difficult to define all the meanings and connotations of silence depicted in literary works. In the 19th century, where the Realism and the Naturalism paid much attention to the study of both physical and mental illnesses, silence was considered as one of the distinctive signs of madness. The paper analyzes four examples of this phenomenon in selected Zola’s and Maupassant’s texts (novels and short stories) whose characters, all mad or maniac, embody various aspects of the silence regarded as a pathological condition of a human being.

Opis:
Marguerite Duras focuses on a rejected individual on the margins of society. Her literary characters oppose being perceived as devoid of autonomy, contesting the fixed model of a submissive and passive woman. On the contrary, they reject the social order and the traditional system of values, claiming the right to freedom and thus demonstrating transgressive female behaviour. Duras’ heroine, a mysterious, crazy person who is looking for love and is aware of her otherness and alienation, appears as a kind of femme fatale or a witch. This image of a “different woman – a disturbing, unhappy, lost, borderline person experiencing a specific crisis – is best illustrated by a beggar. She identifies, par excellence, with the wandering to the lands of perdition and its various readings. Her journey is, at the same time, a sign of dereliction, an attempt at liberation and a quest for identity.

Opis:
Concerning Antonin Artaud it has been question of some lack of work but in the article we propose to the reading we are talking about another kind of absence. Indeed, in his correspondence and in the writings of his youth, the poet was complaining to be absent to himself. He was saying that words could not convey what he felt, that he had the impression to be a spectator of himself. Over time, he will say that he was feeling some emptiness in him. Is it to fill this emptiness that he spent his time writing on notebooks and that he had replaced speaking by screaming? As a conclusion to this article, we spend some time thinking about the concepts of absence and emptiness, following some writings of Pierre Fédida.

Opis:
August Strindberg abandons his family, plunges into the Parisian hell and struggles with the angel in order to regain his faith. He disappoints his public by becoming an alchemist and painter in order to better fight against institutionalized positivism and academic aestheticism. Under the mask of madness, he overthrows all established institutions and blurs the boundaries between objectivity and subjectivity. He disrupts, disturbs, shocks; his strangeness seperates him from the world and assures him, by imitatio Christi, his own Way of the Cross: he internalizes the journey and walks erratic paths, convinced that loss is the path that leads to rebirth.

Opis:
This article proposes to study the royal madness in the Estoria de España, a chronicle retracing the history of Spain from its origins, written at the end of the 13th century under the aegis of the King of Castile and León, Alfonso X the Wise. In the Middle Ages, the paradigm of madness was clearly codified and referred to a certain number of topics, such as illness, sin, or specific physical attributes, which could concern all categories of the population. Nevertheless, the royal figure is normally excluded from this paradigm because madness and all the disturbances it entails would undermine the very essence of royalty. Strictly speaking, the king can be associated with other forms of misconduct assimilated to insanity, such as sin or divine retribution, but not with mental illness as such. In this context, how does the Estoria de España, which narrates the history of Spain through its kings, reconcile the image of the madness of certain kings - particularly the Roman emperors - inherited from its sources with the conceptions of the 13th century? After a reminder of the conception of madness in the Middle Ages, I analyse the concept of madness under the reign of Alfonso X, through the study of the legal code of the Siete Partidas, and the Estoria de España in order to understand its meaning and function in the narration of historical facts.
