Opis:
Baudelaire blamed the bourgeois society and its photographic narcissism which leads to a perversion of the mythical posture and to a loss of consciousness of the ontological dissimilarity between reality and its image. That is why literature has to develop the imagination of the photographic image, which is both useful and magical, both referential and wondrous. Writers of the romantic era may disdain or admire photography, but they all experience the photographic objectivity and thus develop an antidote to the vain objectification of the collective Narcissus.

Being subject to interdisciplinary questioning in the nineteenth century, the human race appears in the text of the young scientist Georges Pouchet as an issue of the construction of a scientific method based on objectivity. Confronted with the limits of nineteenth-century geographical and ethnographic knowledge, this object of study proves that the plurality of human races is difficult to apprehend using objective scientific methods and experimentation, and reflects the imaginary present in the construction of scientific discourse.

Jean-Henri Fabre made numerous discoveries observing meticulously the lifestyle and behaviour of insects which lived around his traditional house in Provence. Those discoveries are still valid, even though the heterodox entomologist became the standard bearer for opponents of transformism, which perpetually progressed and is about to triumph. Fabre is first known to have been an outstanding observer, but also to have gathered together in a colossal collection his entomologist’s memoirs, whose literary – and even poetic – value is celebrated as far away as Japan. This article proposes to question the validity of the preconceived idea that Les Souvenirs entomologiques adds to the accurate eye of the observer the fertile imagination of the poet. Refusing to just make note of this a posteriori superposition, it hypothesizes that there is a reunification of the inflexible empiricism of the biological approach with a creative imagination which reveals to be omnipresent in every phase of Fabre’s enterprise: the hypothesis, the validation by observation, and the literary transcription.

The present paper aims to raise the question of how the use of sound images in the process of foreign language learning/teaching should be made. Among other issues, it addresses the usefulness of various sounds and noises in stimulating learners’ imagination, creativity and skills, as well as in enhancing spoken output in L2.

We will examine the largely ethical vocation of Romain Gary's memorial writing project, which leads it to metamorphose itself into a literary tomb of the forgotten dead. We will then discuss, from a more narratological point of view, how this memory emerges untimely in the narrative and sometimes frees itself from it to signify the transcendent character of the name and the face. Finally, we will show that Gary goes beyond the somewhat naive vision of the memory as a mere recorder of events or images by associating it with the imagination to give it a poetic and counter-historical use.

Claude Bernard’s use of the metaphor of the “living machine” in his writings may seem surprising, since the theorist of experimental medicine is usually known for his disciplined stylistic and scientific rigor. An examination of the different occurrences of the word “machine” in a representative corpus of Claude Bernard’s writings shows that this phrase, which has a long history, allows for the identification of different scientific degrees in the physiologist’s work. This metaphor, which is also a thought pattern, emerges with the Introduction to the Study of experimental Medicine in 1865; its use indicates that some texts or textual zones are less scientific than they are philosophical or generalist.

If the most minimalist definition one can give to the words « art work » is « the way an imagination expresses itself », this definition was, in the second half of the 19th century, the reason why art. critics and theorists argued about the status of photography : purely objective document or potential art work. But writers and literary theorists also took part in this debate, since photography was used to illustrate novels. This article confronts the « literary imagination » and the « photographic imagination », and tries to understand the points of convergence and the points of divergence between these two kinds of imagination, through the contradictory points of view of historians, philosophers and theorists of visual arts and literature.

This article proposes an exploration of the novels of the Goncourts from the perspective of the representations and writing of memory, a fundamental notion in their work and their lives, as evidenced both by the Journal and their passion for collecting. Paradoxically, the characters remember relatively little in their novels. However, although discreet, memory is deployed at strategic moments in the narrative. The aim here is to bring to light a veritable art of “revenez-y”, which unfolds in different variations as psychological, narrative and aesthetic explorations of memory. The article thus explores the sometimes pathological and sometimes reparative representations of memory through the nostalgia and melancholy of the characters, as well as the issue of interaction between memory, dream and oblivion in the Goncourts’ writing. Finally, the aim is to identify the corporalisation of memory at work in the Goncourts’ novels, notably through the intermediary of characters from the world of entertainment: actors and actresses, mimes and acrobats.

Opis:
As a substitute father figure, a mentor, a tutor and a writer to be admired and imitated, Barbey d’Aurevilly acted as a master for Bloy from the moment they first met. Indeed, among all the other self-proclaimed heirs of Barbey’s legacy, Bloy seems to be the most ardent disciple of the Connétable des Lettres. As we concentrate on the way Bloy constructs multiple authority figures who all somehow relate to Barbey, we propose to study the way these two writers, who both lean exclusively towards the figurative, give a particular depth to their relationship by elaborating their imagery, which plays an essential role in the way they construct the bond between master and disciple. This investigation will, in addition, lead us to consider how such a relationship cannot come about without any occasional differences of opinion or mutual irritation. Far from shying away from the master, Bloy clearly constructs his own authorial persona in the light of the brilliant master, rather than in his shadow.

This paper deals with the theme of memory in the novel Mémoires d ’un ange maladroit by Francis Dannemark, a Belgian author writing in French. In order to verify the hypothesis that the writer succeeds in depicting the complex functioning of memory, we examine writing techniques, narrative devices and numerous metaphorical constructions used by the author, and describe them, taking into consideration “memory authorities” (author, hero, reader). The analysis proves that the novel is not a simple variation on memory and its mechanisms but also contains essential observations on the writing process, including the play with the fictionality of a literary work, and on the act of reading. Recollection, memoirs writing, novel writing, reading: all these activities resemble a puzzle.

The symbolism of axis mundi constitutes an integral part of cultural and religious systems across the world. Such symbolism appears clearly and precisely in all forms of religious life. As it is stressed by Eliade, many a time, axis mundi is an intersection of three varied ontological zones (the interior of the Earth, the surface of the Earth, and the Heaven) and creates a contact place of man with sacrum. The axis mundi symbolism, analysed here as a part of literary studies, is reflected also in two important novels by Julius Verne (Adventures of Captain Hatteras, 1864-65 ; An Arctic Mystery, 1897) dedicated to the polar regions. In both novels, such sites (the north-ern and southern poles) become a literary image of axis mundi, while the hypothesis finds its confirmation in the nature of psychological experiences of the heroes cast in the polar regions. The symbolic and religious study of such experiences leads to the conclusion that in both the analysed cases they may be understood as an experience of a contact with sacrum.

The caricature, in its most elementary representation, in its polysemy, its multiple extensions, refers to the burden, to the “fagot load” causing man to moan, to bend and to walk bent “with heavy steps”. Writers, such as comedians or painters of modern life, strive to combine the norms of representation and to distort words to emphasize the animality of man. Serge Patient, in his column entitled The Governor’s Negro published in 1978, propels us back in time, into the collective Guyanese imagination and invites us to focus on a black slave, D’Chimbo. It is then up to the reader to decipher the data, correct them or blame them by laughing brutally or domesticating the laughter. With soothed or revived laughter and words buzzing weaker in the ears, what language and clichés could still emerge?

The abstractions themselves refer to the model of the yantra, the geometrical diagram into which Brahmanic iconography is supposed to subside. In this instance, the apophasis defeats the attempt to signify through painting and language what constitutes itself in painting and language.

Zygmunt Krasiński, the most European of the Polish Romantic writers, composed many literary texts influenced by foreign travels. In his writing, specific geographical spaces were transformed at once into places of imagination and places of intimacy, forming a unique sphere of auto/bio/geo/graphy. This is especially noticeable in Krasiński’s poetic prose written in French, mainly in the half-private and half-literary travel impressions of his excursions in the Alps. The tension between a place of imagination and a place of intimacy is also reflected in the poet’s correspondence, which can be analysed as a textual form of interiorization of the strictly defined places. It is shown in the article on the examples of the Alps and Provence.
