Opis:
After the armistice, Belgium had to reconstruct itself politically and culturally. In literature, this led to latinization that very quickly became a sort of assimilation to France. At the same time, this caused an increase of national conscience that developed among young people as a movement alongside the literary, which has returned under French suzerainty. Some writers (Gauchez, Perier, etc.), however, began to celebrate Belgian francophone authors in order to claim the existence of a different corpus of French literature per se. In 1919, young author Henry Soumagne returned from the German camps and gave in “Les épaves” a fable that attests to the tension between the weight of the 19th-century Belgian myth and 1920s modernism.

Between literature, philosophy of history and history of religions: the idea of universal religion in France in the first half of the 19th century on the example of Edgar Quinet In the first half of the 19th century in France, in the context of the new problems brought by this period, are developed various types of the idea of universal religion, among others its variation based on lay humanitarianism, whose representative is Edgar Quinet. The aim of the article is to show how Quinet formulates this idea at the intersection of three different fields: literature, philosophy of history and history of religion. The first one is used to give it form, the two others to interpret historical data and religious beliefs according to a millenarianist key. The universal religion of Quinet, which fits into a unitive worldview, is paradoxically a religion without religion, emanated from the ‘empty sky’.

The twentieth century witnessed the birth of a feminine strand of autofictional writing coming from the ancient colonies, of which Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade, by the francophone Algerian writer Assia Djebar, and the Arabic Memory in the flesh, by the Algerian writer Ahlam Mosteghanemi, are emblematic. Whether it be in the Arabic or French language, the women writers of the Maghreb risked writing an autobiography in a culture that stresses the anonymity of women. The coming to writing for these women is often accompanied by a desire – or necessity – to revisit the collective past from a female perspective. For these women, literary writing also meant writing their stories on the palimpsest of dominant history, in order to carve their place in it. To fight the forced amnesia of historical discourse constructed by man, they must create works that give voice to the stories silenced by the totalizing male narrative. Djebar and Mosteghanemi both insist that the emancipation of women is possible only if the subaltern woman becomes subject not object of her story/history.

universal religion
history of ideas
19th century French literature
Opis:
In “My heart laid bare” Baudelaire writes about the “Universal Religion” devised for “the alchemists of thought,” “a religion that comes from man, considered as a divine memento.” The idea, as we read in the text, was inspired by the writings of Chateaubriand, De Maistre and those of the “Alexandrians”. And indeed, the two former authors wrote explicitly about a „universal tradition” that finds its fulfillment in the Catholic religion. It does not matter if we recognize the “Alexandrians” as representatives of the Neoplatonic school, the Alexandrian Fathers of Church, or disciples of Hermetism, the very term implies a tradition of both syncretic and mystic character that resembles gnosis. Baudelaire’s “Universal Religion,” despite his Catholic convictions, cannot be associated with Catholicism. Based on a universal transmission of myths and symbols, it rather refers to eternal truths about man as well as to the divine source of all beings – also in the modern world, which puts God’s existence in doubt.

Opis:
Between flagrant contradictions and successive denials, scholars and artists, un-equally, have been constructing the idea of the Middle Ages since the 16th century. Generations were derogatory of the Dark Ages, or the “middle age”, and unflattering texts by Enlightenment philosophers are well known. In the dawn of the 19th century, the idea of Middle Ages appears as both a symptom and a privileged locus for the study of the ruptures and concordances between Classical and Romantic conceptions as, in the mist of the French Revolution, the paradigms that governed history no longer hold. During all the 19th century, reconstructing the Middle Ages blurs the borders between the various orders of knowledge and the new academic disciplines, and opens a via regia to the complex reassessment of literature. Focusing on the choice of the Middle Ages as an “historical other”, this article comments on these disputes in order to assert that, if the medieval period has always been the result of an a posteriori construction, it is as a part of the rise of modernity.
