The ethos of the journalist is based on his representations of the public space. Updated in the discourse, they participate in the construction of citizen identity. This is what we show through an enunciative analysis of editorials from the daily “Le Monde” during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. The analysis highlights an increasingly marked identity divide during the crisis.

The analysis concerns the construction of collective identity of young people from the climate marches in France in 2018–2019. It focuses on their slogans from the discursive perspective with reference to the concepts of collective ethos (Amossy 2010), ethos said and shown (Maingueneau 2012), hyperenunciator, hyperdyscourse and interdiscursivity. We argue that there are three main dimensions interacting in building up the collective ethos through the slogans: enunciative (the forms of saying and showing the ethos), interdiscursive (the presence of ideas from various discourses on ecology, i.e. the hyperdyscourse) and the third one expressed by hyperenunciator using the social media which play a major role in the construction of the Thesaurus of this community in the sense of Maingueneau (2004).

Opis:
Hegemonic political discourse is currently manufactured according to the modes of interaction, but also, and perhaps primarily, according to the identity of the actors involved (Patrick Charaudeau 2005). Apprehended from this point of view, this type of discourse seems to reveal much more its communication mechanisms, namely the discursive tactic, than the strength of its content. Indeed, the discursive tactic relies on the use of manifold strategies, among which persuasive strategies introduced in the discourse through the rhetorical figures appear to play a preponderant role. However, it is important to note that the aforementioned figures, being intertwined with the effects of pathos and ethos, which substitute for the values of truth, are supposed to stir the hearts of its receivers. In this paper, we are going to focus principally on the discursive ethos of the speaker considered here as a discursive means enabling the sender of the message to build an image of oneself. In conformity with the hypothesis that, in the discourse of Nicolas Sarkozy constituting the object of our study based on a corpus encompassing a dozen public speeches by the president (or approximately 65,000 words), some ethos of identification stem from the social affectation to become a central element of the discursive tactic implemented in the discourse analyzed. In other words, Sarkozy’s discourse, with its range of language instruments, seems to create the imaginaries which, through a process of irrational identification, will enable its receivers to intermingle their identity with the speaker’s, and therefore to get thrilled to a gust of adhesion to his political discourse.

Since the eighteenth-century, painting and harmony have regularly been celebrated by criticism in Racine’s verses. With the decline of rhetoric, the sedimentation of literature has quickly covered what depended on art of speech. The subversion of rhetoric, in Britannicus’ hypotyposis, could have contributed to this phenomena. As a bad orator, Nero looks at Junie with a careless look. Judicium can be outflanked by ingenium: paying no attention to the natural signs of the èthos, Nero adopts sophistry and her charms.

The French politician François Fillon, for a long time considered the frontrunner in the French presidential campaign, saw his strong position crumble to the third in most of the polls, after the circulation of rumors against him and his family also known as Penelopegate. Such rumors were at the heart of the 2017 French and American presidential campaigns. In fact, the terms post truth, fake news and alternative facts could be seen as symbols of the current information crisis, i.e. the mistrust felt by many readers regarding the media. The present study sets out to investigate the argumentation used to deconstruct and reconstruct François Fillon’s ethos after dissemination of such rumors on social media. Drawing on the theoretical framework developed by Amossy (2014 et al.) and Maingueneau (2004 et al.) on the analysis of self-presentation and in particular on the concepts of (re)branding and scenography, we analyze the discursive strategies deployed by discussants in face management of the French politician’s image. Our data include two different genres (tweets and posts on newspaper forums) and our findings corroborate Amossy’s research (2014) on strategies used in such face work management as denial of responsibility (sympathy), victimization (empathy) or face threats against the opponents (anger). We have also observed the use of a catastrophic scenario (fear), which was not present in Amossy’s data.

As communication grows ever more media-centric, it often intends to modify the addressee’s attitude. In this context, our chapter aims to investigate a relatively little-examined film review genre from the discursive, pragmatic and rhetorical perspective. The selected corpus consists of one hundred French and Polish journalistic reviews of three famous films from 2019. The act of persuasion we focus on corresponds to a set of strategies exploiting exploiting the deliberative and epideictic dimensions of discourse as well as the rhetorical principles of movere and delectare in order to instil particular views and concepts. Hence, to some extent, the described procedures draw on other discourses, such as elite, advertising, stylistic and filmic discourse. Therefore, our study centres around these new intrinsic features of the film review’s multifaceted nature considered as a sociocultural activity based on the justified assessment and the addresser’s ethos.

Opis:
During the Belle Époque, the writer’s novel gradually replaces the painter’s novel and forms a platform for asking questions about the role of the author in bourgeois society and the causes of their distress. Through this work, the author thus conveys an axiological portrait of himself which, implicitly referring to the difficulty of creation, gives an account of the values shaping the end of the century. The resulting modelling incorporates caricature, which becomes omnipresent in the 19th century, not only for the parodical load that characterises it, but for the accepted power that exaggeration, distortion and joke hold in the interpretation of reality. From Huysmans to Gide, from Lorrain to Gourmont, from Dumur to Mauclair, Mirbeau or Céard, the writer’s novel makes caricature and the devaluation a guarantee of the authenticity of the fictional self-projection.

The purpose of the paper is to analyze a discourse (via the ethos and pathos concepts) published by the French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy to defend his friend Dominique Strauss-Kahn when the DSK sex affair appeared on May 2011. This analysis presents how persuasive discourse, while defending the accused (DSK), becomes a tool used to create the image of the defendant of the accused (BHL as the intellectualist that fights for social justice). This strongly emphasized ethos creates natural imbalance – the one that talks become more important than the one who is the subject of his speech. This effect is strengthened by the emotional impact – pathos is built upon the feeling of indignation.

This paper examines how the Front National’s electoral victories could be explained, partially, in terms of a new discursive rhetoric adopted by Marine Le Pen. In order to compare rhetorical strategies used by both Marine and Jean-Marie Le Pen and their impact on their followers, we use comparable data, which consist of press articles published during the presidential campaigns of each politician and postings by online discussants related to interviews. Using corpus linguistics tools and lexical semantics, we assess how differently both leaders position themselves emotionally and how this emotional positioning is reconstructed within the postings of the viewers. Although no important quantitative difference can be observed in the number of emotion key-words they used respectively, a shift in both politicians’ rhetoric positioning can be observed when analyzing the context in which these keywords are embedded. If Jean-Marie Le Pen focuses on negative feelings towards the Other (anger, resentment), Marine Le Pen promotes a positive ethos (empathy) in order to detoxify the image of her party and broaden her electoral base.

This article focuses on the notion of ethos of famous YouTubers from France and aims to highlight the construction of identity that takes place in the speech acts opening and closing their communication. The nature of these acts on YouTube’s generic scene requires, on the one hand, to question their ritualistic function and, on the other hand, an analysis of the stereotyping of strategies. These points of view allow us to understand the language mechanism of the emblematic figures of French YouTube channels as well as the interpersonal relationship established by their activity.
