    Pierre Mertens’ novel Les éblouissements, published in 1987, is a fictionalised biography of a famous German poet Gottfried Benn, who made the biggest mistake of his life agreeing to support the National Socialist regime during several months. Mertens reconstructs the poet’s life trying to understand the reasons of his commitment, considered by the intellectuals of that time to be a betrayal. Mertens’ text is an illustration of the relationship between the individual and the historical past and, at the same time, an example of problemising the biographical factor in relation to Great History. Playing with the double signification of the word ‘éblouissement’, the novelist offers his own interpretation of the German poet’s double life.

    Henriette Campan (1797–1824) : from the history of a text to the meaning of a life The history of the autobiographical writings of Henriette Campan, chambermaid of Marie Antoinette and a famous educatress of the First French Empire, reflect the history of her life, which was marked by a double historical rupture. After her death, her editors – disrespectful of the last will of the defunct – transformed the documents left to them to inscribe those into a perspective of the Memories on the French Revolution they were working on. Hence, by giving a fake unity to a life placed under the sign of multiple fractures, they did not hesitate to spoil the spirit of the work of the writer.

    Nathalie Sarraute (1900-1999) urodziła się w Rosji, lecz mieszkała we Francji. Była pisarką, kobietą o ogromnej erudycji i poliglotką, której dzieła ukazują doświadczenia tragicznego „Ja”, walczącego przeciwko „Innemu”. Dzieciństwo spędzone za granicą, z dala od ukochanych dziadków, wakacje w Rosji, nadzieja na obiecane spotkanie z matką, bycie bezsilną wobec macochy, wreszcie świadomość, że jej obce otoczenie jest zagrożeniem – wszystkie te czynniki sprawiły, że stała się własnym cenzorem i zrozumiała, jak istotny jest kontakt z „Innym”. Bolesne doświadczenia z dzieciństwa i życie na skrzyżowaniu kultur stały się bardzo bogatą i interesującą materią literacką, wyrażoną w tzw. tropizmach. Od pierwszego do ostatniego dzieła nadrzędny cel autorki to analiza mechanizmów generujących konkretne stwierdzenia, tego, co niewypowiedziane. Sarraute interesuje też wszelka aktywność refleksyjna, spowodowana lękiem przed niechcianą reakcją na to, co mówimy.
    Nathalie Sarraute (1900-1999) was born in Russia but she lived in France. She was a writer, a woman of immense erudition, and a polyglot whose works show the experience of a tragic ‘Me’ fighting against ‘the Other’. The consequences of the childhood spent abroad, far from her grandparents whom she loved very much; the holidays spent in Russia; her expectation of the promised meeting with her mother; her being defenceless against her stepmother; finally, the awareness that her strange surroundings was a threat: all these factors made her censor her own words and understand the importance of contact with the Other. This painful experience of childhood and living at the crossing of cultures, became a very rich and interesting literary substance expressed through so-called tropisms. From her first work to the last one, the author’s most important aim is to deal with the mechanisms that generate concrete statements, like pre-dialogue or under-conversation; she is interested with all kinds of reflective activity caused by the fear of an unwanted reaction to what we say.

    Instead of the cliché, “How can one be a Madagascan?,” I would suggest reversing the question, so, “How can one not be a Madagascan?”. But what would a Madagascan say constitutes being a Madagascan? The journey of the individual, marked by the awareness of a particular place – “La Grande Terre” for the inhabitants, the Red Island for foreigners − by his gestures and his beliefs, could take on an exemplary anthropological value, but under what conditions? Revenir (The Return), Raharimanana’s last and autobiographical novel (he was born in 1967), will provide the starting-point of our enquiry.Actually, Revenir is a fictionalized autobiography, since its hero, Hira, has a different name from that of the author. Or one could call it a “Biography for oneself,” to use the terminology of Dominique Viart, who defines such a work as an “indirect autobiography” or a “biography as a method,” the indirectness corresponding here to the story of his father’s life; his father had hidden his early years (an unhappy childhood) and got his son unwittingly to take on the role of family chronicler, or of writer for the public at large. The end of the story thus becomes a beginning − the history of the parental relationships − which is told at the end of the narrative. All in order to demonstrate the inextricable intertwining of two destinies: that of the father and that of the son. Thus the “story of the filiation” becomes an “(auto)biographical work of fiction” and vice-versa. And there is a third subject (object) of the action, the history of Madagascar, for which both the father and the son are spokesmen.Translated by Mark Waddicor

    Le langage de la pornographie se déploie aujourd’hui non seulement dans les dictionnaires des mots du sexe ou dans les textes, mais aussi sur diverses pages Web. Notre étude se fonde sur un corpus pour lequel nous avons analysé un matériau variationnel relevant du non-standard : une centaine de biographies érotiques d’acteurs X homo- et bisexuels rassemblées sur le site francophone https://www.videosxgays.com/. L’objectif de notre analyse est de nous pencher sur la construction discursive de l’identité des acteurs X pour mettre en avant l’ethos de puissance qui se dégage dans le discours étudié à travers un répertoire spécifique d’instruments langagiers.
    Today the language of pornography unfolds not only in sex word dictionaries or texts, but also on various web pages. Our study is based on a corpus for which we analyzed a variational material relating to the non-standard: around a hundred erotic biographies of homo- and bisexual pornstars gathered on the French-speaking site https://www.videosxgays.com/. The objective of our analysis is to look at the discursive construction of the identity of X actors in order to highlight the power ethos that emerges in the discourse studied through a specific repertoire of linguistic instruments.

    Discovered in August 1922 by the Count of Saint–Périer and given to the laboratory of Pale- ontology in the National Museum of Natural History of Paris a few months later, the Venus of Lespugue can be seen as a major Palaeolithic work. A lot of theories have tried to explain its meaning and function in Palaeolithic society, but its biography within the museum still remained to be done. This biography will help to examine the situation of the whole of Prehistory within the National Museum of Natural History, to understand the evolution of this institution during the last century, and to reevaluate the rank of masterpiece that has been attributed to the Venus in the new Musée de l’Homme

    Diverses manifestations de l’amour sont aujourd’hui bel et bien répandues sur les sites Internet thématiques qui semblent être devenus indispensables à des stratégies de marketing efficaces. Parmi de telles pages web, il existe des portails bien particuliers, à savoir les pages à contenus pornographiques où l’on peut très facilement avoir accès à d’innombrables photos et vidéos permettant aux utilisateurs de satisfaire des appétits charnels fort différents. Notre analyse s’appuie sur un corpus pour lequel nous avons saisi et examiné un matériau variationnel diastratique relevant du non-standard, c’est-à-dire une centaine de biographies érotiques d’acteurs X homo- et bisexuels rassemblées sur le site francophone : https://www.videosxgays.com/ L’objectif de notre étude est de voir de plus près comment la langue française contemporaine, et plus précisément sa variété linguistique liée à l’implantation sociale des utilisateurs, parle de l’amour physique à l’époque du culte du corps conforté par l’utilisation de nouvelles technologies.
    Various manifestations of love are well and truly widespread today on thematic websites which seem to have become essential for effective marketing strategies. Among such web pages, there are very specific portals, namely pages of pornographic content where one can very easily have access to countless photos and videos allowing users to satisfy their appetites. Our analysis is based on a corpus for which we have obtained and examined variational non-standard diastratic material, that is to say, one hundred erotic biographies of homo- and bisexual X-rated actors gathered on the French-speaking site: https://www.videosxgays.com/ The objective of our study is to see more closely how the contemporary French language, and more precisely its linguistic variety linked to the social implantation of users, speaks of physical love during a time of obsession with body image, reinforced by new technologies.

    1. The aim of the article is to reconstruct the biography of Countess Laura Czosnowska, the daughter of Colonel Franciszek Górski, who was generally considered one of the Warsaw socialites at the beginning of the 1830s (calling Laura a “Lioness” the author makes an allusion to Stanisław Bogusławski’s play Lions and Lionesses of 1846). 2. Countess Czosnowska’s history is a streak of painful and unhappy events. Her first marriage to Captain Janusz Czosnowski, an officer of the Polish Army, that was concluded on 16 December 1830, ends in dramatic circumstances with the husband’s suicide (he suspected his wife of a romance with her step-brother, Józef Poniatowski – a natural son of Józef Antoni Poniatowski and Zofia Oborska). After this event Laura takes refuge in the palace of her mother, the wife of General Dziekoński, in Hieronimowo, where she brings up Michalina Dziekońska (later to be Zaleska). There, by accident, she contributes to the death of Michalina’s father, Michał Dziekoński, Mrs Dziekońska’s brother-in-law. A series of traumatic events results in Laura moving to Paris – and this is the beginning of the second stage of her life. 3. In the capital of France the woman makes Karol Edmund Chojecki’s acquaintance – in the circle of their mutual acquaintances the author mentions Maria Kalergis, Fryderyk Chopin and Cyprian Norwid. From Laura and Karol Chojecki’s relationship Maria was born in 1847 – and Karol admitted his fatherhood at once, however, Laura (influenced by Mrs. Dziekońska) tried to hide the fact of the birth, as she was afraid of a scandal. Czosnowska also did not even think about marrying Chojecki, as it would be seen as a misalliance. As a result of Mrs. Dziekońska’s intrigues Karol lost contact with his daughter; to make things worse he was forced to leave France for political reasons (he was involved in the activities of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon’s “Voix du Peuple” and of Adam Mickiewicz’s “Trybuna Ludów”). After a year’s stay in Egypt Chojecki comes to Nice; soon he also obtains a residence permit and he regains his child. The little Maria is placed in a boarding house in Neuilly, then she continues her education in Switzerland, and when she is seventeen she returns to Paris and on 12 September 1856 marries a young captain, Edmond Bureau. So the relation between Laura Czosnowska and Karol Edmund Chojecki – like her first marriage – ends in dramatic circumstances. Czosnowska’s third love affair does not look better; in 1854 she married in England Viscount Jean-Alexandre de Labarthe-Giscaro. The new husband soon turned out to be a fraudster and a bankrupt – after many problems with the law (and after some court sentences) in 1872 the viscount is finally sentenced to 20 years of hard labor in Caledonia and a fine of 3,000 francs (the reason being a forgery of a letter of credit signed on behalf of Ernest Courtot de Cissey, the then minister of war). Laura allots all her meager savings for supporting her exiled husband and for maintaining the two children from that marriage (the daughter placed in a boarding house ran by nuns and the gravely ill son). Jean-Alexandre dies in 1875. In 1881 Cyprian Norwid informs Konstancja Górska about the hurtful fate of the late Laura’s children. However, it is difficult to establish the date of Laura’s death – we may only be sure (owing to the genealogical note written by the son of Maria – Laura Czosnowska and Karol Edmund Chojecki’s natural daughter – saying that she died – like many Polish emigrants – in the Paris St Casimir’s Institute. We may also suppose that Chojecki tried to aid her in the last years of her life, although we do not have documents that could unambiguously confirm these intuitions.
