The chief features of Romance reflexive passives are: the imperfective aspect of the verb, a small number of definite subjects (which does not exceed 50%), a very high percentage of inanimate subjects (almost 100%), the absence of an agent constituent, a tendency towards V-S order. These features favour the thetic character of utterances with reflexive passives. We can observe a tendency for periphrastic passives to be replaced by reflexive passives, especially in Spanish, that is to say, some reflexive passives tend to take features characteristic of periphrastic passives such as definite subject or perfective verb. Four languages: Italian, Portuguese, Rumanian and Spanish belong to the central zone, French is aberrent. The weakness of the French reflexive passives is correlated with the strength of the French periphrastic passives, favoured by analytical tendency. The specificity of Rumanian consists in the fact that it is rich in periphrastic as well as in reflexive passives. Its richness in periphrastic passives can be explained by the weakness of its impersonals and probably also by French influence.

The purpose of the paper is to present and explain the etymology of some chess terms (‘chess’, ‘checkmate’) and the chessmen’s names (‘king’, ‘queen’, ‘bishop’, ‘knight’, ‘rook’ and ‘pawn’) in seven Romance languages. Numerous words referring to chess in Portuguese, Galician, Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian and Romanian are analysed and compared so as to show their common history and some interesting linguistic facts that occurred during their formation.

Pierre Michon’s Vies minuscules reveals something of the narrator’s life through eight mini-biographies. Could this be an indirect autobiography? Are the boundaries between the characters and the narrator fully inaccessible? Is this story an attempt at mythologizing reality? This article addresses the close relationship that is built between autobiography and reality writing in Vies minuscules. The absence of separating limits between the « real » of the minuscules and autobiography allows for fiction to become he place of a mythologizing of the « I » through the fabulousness of the « reality » of those characters.

Despite the growing number of academic publications discussing the advantages of translation for language learning, school teachers of French rarely use such exercises in their work with students, complaining mainly about lack of time and suitable teaching materials. Academic centres which educate future linguists offer more opportunities to use translation in practical French language classes. This article presents the opinions of students of Romance studies on the subject of translation in language learning after a semester of work with Janina Radej’s publication entitled “Francuski w tłumaczeniach. Gramatyka 1-4” [French in translation. Grammar 1-4]. It was found that for students, translation is a new and attractive exercise that diversifies the language learning process. Despite the greater effort needed, students unanimously declared that they want to do this type of exercise. They recognised not only benefits in terms of linguistic improvement, but also the interdisciplinary value, since translation exercises in the language course also offer students preparation for classes in translation studies, and serve as a prelude for doing translations in the future.

By this study, we conducted a reflection on an aspect of literary resistance. To resist denial towards “The Arab” killed in Camus’s novel “The Stranger”, The Algerian journalist and writer Kamel Daoud writes a chronic : Against Meursault or the "Arab" double shot, and a novel : The Meursault investigation. We examined the transaction from chronic to novel and found that the resistance discourse unfolds on a very complex dialogic space. Indeed, there is a generic dialogue between the chronic and the novel, and self-dialogue between the journalist's work and that of the writer. This dialogism allows a clear view of the act of resistance.

L’objectif de cet article est d’analyser le comportement des noms composés anglais en –ing lors de leur traduction en langues romanes. Le point de départ de cette analyse est constitué par notre étude de l’entrée des termes anglais en –ing dans le vocabulaire juridique des langues romanes, présentée lors des 10e Journées internationales « Lexicologie, terminologie, traduction » (Université de Strasbourg, 2015). L’approche de la présente recherche consiste en une analyse contrastive de la pénétration des noms composés anglais contenant le morphème -ing dans le vocabulaire juridique français, roumain, italien, espagnol et portugais, afin d’arriver à une évaluation des différences de perception en traduction entre les structures simples en –ing et les structures composées, ainsi qu’à une évaluation du degré de perméabilité des langues-cibles dans le domaine juridique au contact avec les termes juridiques anglo-saxons. Une des implications pratiques de cette analyse sera d’offrir un support d’analyse linguistique aux traducteurs juridiques, nous basant aussi sur notre expérience pratique en tant que traducteur-interprète assermenté près le Tribunal de Grande Instance de Lyon et la Cour d’Appel de Lyon, et en tant qu’enseignant en anglais de spécialité, traduction juridique.
The aim of this paper is to analyse the behaviour of -ing compound nouns in the process of their translation into Romance languages. The starting point of this analysis is our research into the entry of -ing simple nouns in the legal vocabulary of Romance languages, which we presented at the 10th International Days of the Lexicology, Terminology and Translation Network (University of Strasbourg, 2015). The method of the present research consists in a contrastive analysis of the entry of English compound nouns containing the morpheme -ing in the legal vocabulary of French, Romanian, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, in order to assess both the translating differences in terms of perception between the simple and compound -ing structures, and the degree of permeability of the legal target-languages in contact with the legal English terms. One of the practical purposes of the present research will be offering a linguistic analysis basis to legal translators, as we founded our work on our hands-on experience as a legal translator and interpreter with the Tribunal de Grande Instance (High Court) of Lyon and the Court of Appeal, as well as a lecturer in legal English and translation.
 Celem artykułu jest analiza angielskich rzeczowników złożonych zakończonych na – ing w tłumaczeniu na języki romańskie. Punktem wyjścia dla analizy jest badanie rzeczowników prostych występujących w językach romańskich prawniczych które zaprezentowano na 10. Międzynarodowych Dniach Sieci Leksykologii, Terminologii i Tłumaczeń Pisemnych (Uniwersytet w Strasburgu, 2015). Metoda badawcza polega na kontrastywnej analizie angielskich złożonych rzeczowników zawierających badany morfem w prawniczym słownictwie francuskim, rumuńskim, włoskim, hiszpańskim i portugalskim. Dokonano jej w celu ustalenia różnic translacyjnych.

The article analyses the figures of hermits and recluses presented in The Quest for the Holy Grail, and functioning in this anonymous Arthurian romance of the 13th century as variants of the figure of a spiritual mentor, complementing the figure of a master in chivalry. These characters shape the narrative discourse and enrich the sapiential, moral and formative aspects of the work. They also re-define the courtly ethos by introducing the idea of celestial chivalry, which complements the idea of terrestrial chivalry, typical of the Arthurian romance of the 12th century.
L’article propose une étude approfondie et interdisciplinaire de deux types de personnages emblématiques et inspirateurs qui manifestent leur présence dans la Queste del Saint Graal, texte arthurien français en prose du XIIIe siècle : le personnage de l’ermite et celui de la recluse. Figures du maître par excellence, ils sont porteurs du savoir et de la sagesse qui dépassent largement le cadre d’un simple didactisme et de la parénèse. Leur présence témoigne de l’ouverture de la littérature occidentale au souffle puissant de la spiritualité du christianisme oriental. Elle importe également pour la construction et le sens de l’univers représenté de l’ouvrage analysé.

Opis:
The reflexive construction and some of the uses of passive voice in Latin: the mainspring of the creation of the Romanic pronominal. In Latin they are not strictly speaking pronominal verbs. Latin uses only verbal constructions with reflexive pronoun. The meaning is always reflexive: the subject acts on himself. This meaning is also expressed by passive voice which P. Flobert calls “intrinsèque”. On the other hand, in a few examples, the pronominal construction, as the passive voice does, signifies a process of which agent can’t be named. Such synonymy is the way to the development of pronominal verbs in romance languages.

Speaking foreign language does not imply only mastering its lexical and morphosyntactic code, but, more importantly, learning to conceptualize differently the world around us. One of major sources of deviations in L2 is due to a very poor mastery of conventional structures (formulaic competence), an incorrect linguistic profiling and the confusion between the synthetic and analytical character of the L1 and the L2 (here Polish and French). Beginners in Romance philology often fall into a trap when trying to verbalize in a written form their communicative intentions. We propose here to analyze their sociolinguistic and sociocultural mistakes in order to imagine a course of remedial teaching.

Camus complements his novels with long peritexts, thus using his ecclesiastic authority to legitimise their moral and didactic value. In these peritexts he juxtapposes the licentious novels with his own devout works of fiction, which are, in his own words, not only valuable and worth recommending, but also capable of saving the readers’ souls, put in danger by other texts. In any case, a close reading of these peritexts reveals a view which challenges the idea of the novel’s insidiousness and which bears witness to Camus’s great fascination with this officially condemned literary genre.

The aim of this article is to analyse the attitude towards the linguistic norm of the first-year students of Romance Philology in Warsaw through the auto-narration. By this tool, belonging to the qualitative methodology, the learner performs a retrospective introspection and thus ‘evaluates’ the learning, in our context – his learning of grammar. The stories of students-future philologists will be analysed according to the following aspects: the importance given to the linguistic norm (understood here as the need for grammatical correction), the perception of its ‘utility’ in relation to other competences and language subsystems, the relationship between awareness of the norm and the effectiveness / quality of communication in a foreign language.

Powyższy artykuł w małym stopniu podejmuje tematykę najszerzej dotychczas dyskutowaną w publikacjach językoznawczych: podziału struktur czasowników zwrotnych ze względu na agentywność podmiotu, wartości agentywnych agensa domyślnego struktury biernej z zaimkiem se, czy różnic typologicznych warunkujących częstotliwość jej występowania w językach romańskich. Bardziej dokładnie analizowane są niektóre charakterystyki tejże struktury, a szczególnie jej wartości temporo-aspektualne. Punkt widzenia przedstawiony w artykule jest całkowicie odmienny od stanowiska zajmowanego dotychczas przez badaczy problemu (struktura pasywna z zaimkiem se jest ograniczona na płaszczyźnie aspektualnej). Za główną przyczynę takiego podejścia do problemu autor uznał fakt, że większość dotychczas proponowanych przykładów, stanowiących podstawę rozważań nad problemem, ma charakter wybitnie nietekstowy. Sprowadza to najczęściej analizowaną strukturę do statusu wypowiedzi ogólnych lub deontycznych. Artykuł zawiera trzypłaszczyznową (leksykalno-semantyczno-agentywną) analizę czasowników i argumentów, jak również zależności, jakie między nimi istnieją w obrębie omawianej struktury. W pewnym sensie wypełnia więc lukę tematyczną istniejącą ciągłe w obecnym stanie badań nad problemem oraz proponuje bardziej analityczny punkt wyjścia dla niektórych problemów wynikających z bogatej semantyki strony biernej w językach romańskich.
