The objective of this text consists in presenting how it is necessary for contemporary translators and interpreters (both literary and specialised) to acquire and develop the ability to recognize elements of identity discourse in translated texts. Nowadays, the need for inter-cultural exchange is inevitably connected with the necessity of establishing harmonious co-existence for numerous cultures and identities. Therefore, it is crucial to educate translators in a way that enables them to pay special attention to identity and cultural perturbations present in translated texts (culture and language hybridisation, multiple identity, cultural dislocation, presence in linguistic and political discourse of minority cultures), regardless of their genre or form. Such a strong emphasis on identity problems in the translation is especially relevant in the European context, where the attention of researchers and politicians directed at identity problems stemming from ethnical and cultural issues sets the framework for a new cultural paradigm that determines the future development of the EU. Becoming acquainted with this paradigm which emphasises fluency, identity unmarkedness and the new model of European collectivity is indispensable for a translator aspiring to become a true cultural mediator.

The article analyzes the way in which the modern car-advertisement defines the identity of women as potential purchasers – to whom it is designed to get through. The research includes language and iconic instruments by which this type of advertisement aims to create a feminized market of products formerly recognized as traditionally masculine. The identification of the addressee of each publicity material might be subsumed under a set of stereotypes, thus enabling advertisers to get across their message using the code of addressee’s own values. The present paper concentrates on the linguistic specifity of the ads for high-tech goods (automobiles) targeting the feminine public and eventually points out their high degree of markedness according to the sex of addressees. Discourse analysis and a closer look at linguistic means appearing in French, Spanish and Polish automotive commercials both reveals a stereotyped woman’s image and shows how they happen to perpetutate it.

The exploration of heritage regional language varieties and the identity quest in Russia take place against a background of protest against standard Russian, a legacy of the Soviet era, and involve heated discussions about norms and the role of regional varieties of Russian. L’exploration du patrimoine linguistique régional s’effectue dans les conditions de contestation et de modification du modèle du russe standard hérité de l’époque soviétique. L’analyse de nouvelles attitudes à l’opposition standard/non standard et aux tentatives de légitimer le « russe normé » régional, considéré de plus en plus comme marque de l’identité territoriale au sein de la Fédération de Russie.

This paper is intended to be an analytical study of African identity and culture in Mongo Beti’s Completed Mission. It aims to shed light on the specificity of this society, the place that the individual occupies there and the transformations that it suffered with the arrival of the colonizer. It focuses first of all on the characters of the novel and their attributions in order to know how the social group, to which these entities belong, is constituted, structured and hierarchized. It then reconstructs the cultural aspects of black man’s life as suggested by the text.
Cet article se veut une étude analytique de l’identité et de la culture africaine dans Mission terminée de Mongo Beti. Il a pour objectif de faire la lumière sur la spécificité de cette société, la place que l’individu y occupe et les transformations qu’elle a subies avec l’arrivée du colonisateur. Il est centré d’abord sur les personnages du roman et leurs attributions afin de savoir comment est constitué, structuré et hiérarchisé le groupe social auquel appartiennent ces entités. Il reconstitue ensuite les aspects culturels de la vie de l’homme noir tels qu’ils sont suggérés par le texte.

According to EKKA (National Center of Social Solidarity), in 2016, al-most 5000 unaccompanied minor refugees were registered in Greece. Our research is part of a research for new methodological tools enabling language teachers to adapt their teaching to the needs of these new learners, in particular by exploiting their cultural and linguistic capital. One of these tools is the "identity text" which, according to Cummins (2006), is a reflection of the author's identity at some point in his/her biography. The hypotheses of our research are that the production of identity texts by unaccompanied minor refugees can reinforce (H1) their self-esteem, (H2) their motivation for learning new languages in school and (H3) the development of skills that could lead to better integration (affective, linguistic, cultural and socio-cultural) within the host country's school system. These hypotheses are confirmed by the results of cross-content analysis of a collection of identity texts produced online (on Facebook) in 2016-2017 by 30 unaccompanied minor refugees of Syrian, Afghan and Pakistani origin, aged between 14 to 18 years old. It appears that our three hypotheses are validated to a significant extent. These findings may be an incentive for language teachers, but perhaps also for the actors of Formal and Non Formal education to observe and anchor the linguistic and cultural skills of newly arrived refugees, so that they find their place more easily in a welcoming society.

La vie et l’oeuvre de l’auteur français Jean Genet ont toujours été une quête de l’oeuvre d’art absolue. Dans cette quête, trois figures majeures le guideront : le sculpteur Giacometti, le peintre Rembrandt et le funambule Abdellah Bentaga. À travers les oeuvres de ces artistes, Genet découvrira l’identité absolue. Qu’est-ce qui le mena vers cette découverte et quelles conséquences eurent-elles sur l’écrivain ? C’est ce rapport à l’Autre, analysé dans les quatre textes que Genet a écrit sur ces artistes, que nous nous proposons d’interroger dans cet article, notamment à travers le mythe de Narcisse.
The life and work of French author Jean Genet have always been a quest for the ultimate masterpiece. In this quest, three major figures will guide him: the sculptor Giacometti, the painter Rembrandt and the tightrope walker Abdellah Bentaga. Through the works of these artists, Genet will discover the ultimate identity. What drew him to this discovery and which consequences did it have on the writer? It is this relationship to the Other, analyzed in the four texts that Genet wrote about these artists, that we will explore in this article, particularly through the myth of Narcissus.

Le présent article constitue une tentative d’exploiter, à des fins d’analyse du personnage littéraire, la notion de crise d’identité, récemment développée par Nathalie Heinich dans son ouvrage Ce que n’est pas l’identité. Pour ce faire, l’auteur s’appuie sur des exemples tirés de romans de Leïla Houari (Ni langue ni pays) et de Girolamo Santocono (Dinddra), deux auteurs belges contemporains d’origine migrante. Leurs personnages, migrants ou descendants de migrants, vivent des expériences qui s’apparentent à celle conceptualisée par Heinich. L’auteur interroge les raisons de ces crises identitaires (post)migratoires, leur déroulement et leur issue. Il s’avère que l’identité des migrant(e)s et de leurs descendant(e)s, marquée par une instabilité fondamentale, est particulièrement sujette à la crise. Toutefois, si l’identité (post)migratoire peut souvent être qualifiée de « crisique », les crises que traversent les personnages aboutissent habituellement à un dénouement positif.
This paper is an attempt to exploit, for purposes of literary character analysis, the notion of identity crisis, recently developed by Nathalie Heinich in her book Ce que n’est pas l’identité. To do this, the author draws on examples taken from novels by Leïla Houari (Ni langue ni pays) and Girolamo Santocono (Dinddra), both contemporary Belgian authors of migrant origin. Their characters, migrants or descendants of migrants, live experiences akin to that conceptualized by Heinich. The author questions the reasons for these (post)migratory identity crises, their course and their results. It turns out that the identity of migrants and their descendants, marked by fundamental instability, is particularly prone to the crisis. While their identities can often be described as being in crisis, the crises they go through usually result in a positive outcome.

The present article discusses a hybrid identity of two main characters from the novel The Forgotten by Élie Wiesel. Having left Europe, Elhanan Rosenbaum settles down in the United States. Even though he adapts to his new surroundings, he perceives himself chiefly as a Jew. When he begins to suffer from an incurable disease that causes him to lose his memory, he compels his son, who was brought up in the USA, to go to Romania. The main goal of this trip is to rescue the memory of the past from oblivion: memory as an indicator of Jewishness. Moreover, thanks to the expedition, Malkiel succeeds to strengthen his own Jewish identity.

If there is an aesthetic that characterizes the novel Tels des astres éteints writing by Leonora Miano, it is the combination of literary art and the art of music. This artistic hybridity that starts from paratexts transforms the novel into iso-epistemic space and into an archive of memory discography. For this poetic hybrid, the author expands the fields of observation and intensifies cognitive quest (Krysinski, 2004). It is also a scriptural technical mobilized to translate and defend the identity hybridity.

The analysis is part of research on communication, especially the one concerning informative media strategy. It is responsible for creating semiotic-discursive construction of reality. Media undertake social discussion, which often leads to relativization of socio-cultural values in society. As a result, some concepts devaluate while others undergo social valuation. Doxa as the basis of social perception continues to be discussed and in some cases particular categorical imperatives are subject to the process of abolishing the taboo or quite the opposite. Such discussion is necessary firstly because of principles which regulate functioning of mass society and secondly because of ideas valued as paradigms of democratic behaviours. The analysis is limited to a number of euphemistic uses in French and Polish informative media. Its purpose is to find out whether euphemistic denominations influence creating particular social attitudes and whether they play a role in creating social identity. The above mentioned problem is directly connected with the phenomenon of information mediatisation in democratic societies. It is closely related to research on the area ideologisation because media create particular images of social reality. The analysis is also embedded in the context of social cognition, mainly by the aspect of appraisal and doxa.
L’article présente quelques éléments de réflexion susceptibles de contribuer au développement d’une étude sur la portée sociale de l’euphémisation à l’exemple du discours médiatique. L’analyse porte sur quelques emplois euphémiques présents dans la presse française et polonaise (presse magazine et presse d’information générale) et doit répondre aux questions suivantes : les dénominations euphémiques auxquelles les agents médiatiques ont recours provoquent-elles l’instauration de nouvelles attitudes sociales, le changement des stéréotypes ou l’évolution dans les schèmes perceptifs ? Finalement, sont-elles importantes dans la création de l’identité sociale ? Le problème sera discuté d’abord dans le contexte de la doxa propre aux comportements des consommateurs (à l’exemple de la presse féminine) et ensuite, de celle qui est due à la citoyenneté contemporaine (à l’exemple de la presse d’information générale). Dans le second cas, il s’agit de l’emploi des dénominations désignant le statut matrimonial des personnes non mariées. On s’inspire de l’étude faite par Bonhomme et Horak (2009), selon laquelle l’euphémisation s’opère sur le contenu doxal propre à une société.

Le 5 Juillet 2012, au cinquantième anniversaire des accords d’Evian, marquant la fin de la guerre d’Algérie et l’indépendance du pays, la France n’est pas conviée aux cérémonies. C’est en effet une lutte accrue contre la puissance coloniale qui est à cette occasion célébrée ; ce sont les martyrs tombés pour la patrie sous les armes françaises qui sont commémorés. L’histoire des deux pays est donc toujours marquée par le sang. En asseyant leur autorité sur l’ancienne colonie, les Français ont imposé leur culture mais aussi leur langue, dévalorisant celle de la population indigène. De fait, ces conflits ont fait naître chez le peuple arabe un traumatisme linguistique toujours ancré dans les mémoires. Les situations de diglossie, qui font coexister des variétés linguistiques au sein d’un même territoire, soulèvent des interrogations sur le statut des langues en Algérie et leur cohabitation : le français reste imprégné d’une idéologie coloniale, l’arabe classique marqué par la religion et le berbère confiné à la sphère du privé. Dans L’anthropologie structurale, Claude Lévi-Strauss considère « le langage, à la fois comme le fait culturel par excellence et celui par l'intermédiaire duquel toutes les formes de la vie sociale s'établissent et se perpétuent ». On comprend dès lors l’importance de considérer la structure du plurilinguisme en Algérie puisqu’il est à la base de l’organisation de la société. Il convient alors de déterminer si ces langues interagissent uniquement dans un rapport de force. Pour cela notre analyse empruntera un point de vue littéraire en se penchant sur les œuvres d’Assia Djebar, romancière algérienne de langue française. La problématique de la langue, au cœur de ses romans, a déjà été largement documenté, nous nous inscrivons ici dans de la lignée de ces recherches précédentes, et entendons traiter la question sur fond historique. Il s’agira de se demander comment un écrivain algérien pense son rapport aux langues et si le métissage linguistique au sein d’une même œuvre peut se jouer des frontières. Le plurilinguisme constitutif de l’Algérie établit en effet des barrières qui cloisonnent les langues. Les textes d’Assia Djebar, dans un jeu entre oralité et écriture, font intervenir la mixité et démantèlent le paternalisme dont est empreint le français. La romancière parvient à conjuguer ces deux versants d’une même langue, pour qu’en résulte une écriture sur les marges, qui ne se situe que dans un entre-deux. Comment dès lors caractériser ce mouvement du texte ; est-il migration, errance ou fuite ?

In her writing, Vera Feyder, representative of the tribe called by the historians of Belgian iterature generation of identity, the question of identity is inextricably linked with the experience of World War II. The memory of childhood marked by the martyrdom of his father and the deep misery and loneliness, in which the author and his mother lived in the wartime, decide on the content and meaning of her writing. A sense of responsibility for other people, all resistance to the injustice, disagreement with indifference, memory of the past – it is a kind of code, which, according to Feyder, should apply a modern writer.

This article – focused on three plays that make up Marco Micone’s dramatic trilogy (Gens du silence, Addolorata, Déjà l’agonie) – consists of two parts. First, it outlines the historical-political environment of Quebec in the context of immigration and identity issues. Then, the article analyzes some compositional and linguistic aspects – micro- and macrostructural – linked to the migrant identity of the protagonists (monology, adialogism, plurilingualism, metalinguism).
