The aim of the present paper is to show how the crisis of exotic literature, understood as the first type of literature inspired directly by colonies, contributed to the development of ethnography. The paper is divided into three parts. The first one defines exotic literature and analyses the reasons of its crisis. The second presents the main theories concerning colonial novel coming from the beginning of the 20th century; and the last part shows the example of an ethnographic discourse in one of the colonial novels praised by their theoreticians: Derrière les vieux murs en ruines by Aline Réveillaud de Lens (1881-1925).

Beyond the resistance – French West Indian’s literature facing the colonial past and globalization Our aim in this paper is to analyze the different stances taken by four eminent authors from the French Antilles – Aimé Césaire, René Ménil, Édouard Glissant and Patrick Chamoiseau – with regards to the socio-cultural situation of the region. Their literary projects work out the term “resistance” by means of different concepts and artistic gestures. The anti-colonial revolt of Césaire is challenged by Glissant's archipelagic thinking and Chamoiseau's metaphorical figure of the “warrior of the imaginary”, and there is still the “cannibal poetry” of Ménil. Taking into account the variation of ideological context accompanying the emergence of these concepts, we will see how the idea of resistance inspires the reflection on the writing and the role of the literature in the ever changing Antillean society.

The combination of two traditional Malagasy genres, kabary and sovâ, to produce the monologue of a desperate father named “Za” - whose name signifies an intimate, familiar “Me” - engenders the narrative situated between two realities: the world of the living and the world of the dead. This intersection serves to describe the banally apocalyptic reality in which today’s Madagascar is immersed. Surrounded by characters drawn from legends and from his own previous works, Raharimanana - a novelist, poet and playwright who was born in 1967 and has lived for the past twenty years in France - begins a work of memory by confronting the emblematic shadows of Malagasy history. Everything is expressed through the author’s language, which, via lisping, reveals unsuspected meanings and imposes on words the mutilation that Raharimanana’s narrator had to endure. It also elicits images of injuries inflicted on the author’s father in 2002. Following in the path of Frankétienne and Sony Labou Tansi, the initial narrative denounces taboos, such as respect for ancestors. Garbled French becomes a neology appropriate for an analysis of the postcolonial reality as well as for defining the attitude of one who fervently refuses to adopt a monolithic approach towards it. La Rose de sable d’Henry de Montherlant représente une vive critique du colonialisme, notamment à travers l’évolution identitaire et morale du personnage principal, lieutenant français affecté au Maroc. Dans le présent article, je me donne pour but d’analyser les procédés langagiers qui traduisent l’évolution de son attitude de la manière la plus évidente et qui démontrent également la vision de l’altérité par d’autres Français faisant partie de l’entourage du protagoniste. Je commencerai par un aperçu du contexte historique et socioculturel du roman pour passer ensuite à une analyse linguistique et culturelle du texte. Je retracerai également les principales étapes de l’évolution identitaire du héros mais aussi les changements de la vision de l’Autre qui résultent de cette évolution.
Henry de Montherlant’s La Rose de sable represents a sharp criticism of colonialism, especially through the identity evolution of the main character, a French lieutenant assigned to Morocco. This paper deals with the language processes reflecting the evolution of his attitude and demonstrating the vision of otherness by other French individuals who are part of the protagonist’s entourage. I will start with an overview of the historical context of the novel and then move on to an analysis of the text. I will also trace the main stages of the evolution of the hero but also the changes in his vision of the Other.

Révélations du Grand Océan [Revelations of the Great Ocean] by Jules Hermann (1846-1924), published posthumously in 1927 and nourishing imagination of some Mauritian writers, were inspired by the scientific theory of continental drift proposed by Alfred Wegener. Hermann imagined an Atlantis of the South, Lemuria, situated between India and Africa and submerged in the wake of a continental cataclysm. He found remnants of this drowned continent, or more precisely he found its linguistic remains, in Malagasy language, which he saw as an avatar of the Lemurian language, and its physical remains in the island of Madagascar, together with the Mascarene islands. After Robert Edward Hart (1891-1954) and his Cycle de Pierre Flandres (1928-1936), it was Malcolm de Chazal, a primitivist painter and (surrealist?) poet, or “total artist” (Robert Furlong), who took his inspiration from the “Lemurian myth”. Chazal’s monographer Christophe Chabbert has shown how, for Chazal, and especially in Petrusmok. Mythe (1951), the myth becomes inspiration to construct a cosmogony of the islands of the Indian Ocean and to show – artistically and spiritually – their autonomy.
