Opis:
French philosopher Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) is best known as the co-founder of modern hermeneutics. Under this framework, he developed a practical philosophy (theory of action). Its applications can be found in his attitude to public and civic issues (e.g. expressed in skepticism to the course of events in May 1968 or protests against the worsening social inequalities), where there was always a religious theme, resulting from a strong Christian faith rooted in the Protestant profile. Ricoeur differentiated politics as classically understood politics as a space for joint action within a framework of policies rather than more contemporary views, where it is associated with gaining and securing power. He pointed to the need for dialogue and negotiations between the government and the social partners, trade unions and political adversaries. Political activity becomes similar to practical wisdom.

The lecture engages the debate concerning the relation between politics and ethics. Ethics is the guardian of good practice and policy the guardian of the quality of life in the community. The author discusses their mutual historical development paying special attention to two dates. First in 1789, when the Bastille was demolished and the Republic founded with a slogan of ethical content (“Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”), but only in order to control it. The second date is 1989, the year in which the Berlin Wall fell, constitutes a turning point and the dominance of ethics over politics promoted by the triad: democracy, accountability, and human rights, which undoubtedly belong to the highest value. The problem with this is that ethical values can be used in an ideological way. In the final section, the Christian position on the proper relationship between ethics and policy and vice versa is discussed.

Éric Chevillard, associated mainly with ludic literature, which plays with the word and deconstructs novelistic conventions, in his own way inscribes himself in the tradition of engaged literature. By means of atypical narration and singular style he fights against not so much social, political or economic injustice as stereotypical literature in all its triviality and formulaicity. Relying on selected theories of narrative strategies characteristic of novels and militant texts, the present paper analyses Démolir Nisard, one of Chevillard’s most confrontational texts, and thus discusses modalities and assumptions of the work inspired by the overtly political genre – the pamphlet.

The article proposes a reflection concerning the connections between the voice representations or vocal practices, worked out towards the end of the Enlightenment period and in the first decades of the 19th century in the French cultural area, and the birth of the socio-economic system characteristic of the bourgeois society. The paper focuses, in particular, on political presuppositions – in the Aristotelian sense of the word « political » – on which all the uses of voice, both spoken and sung, are based. The objective of the study is to understand the status of voice and singing in the process of creation of a modern anthropology.

The political morality that Plato and Aristotle supported was governed by various anthropological and social determinants, which means that they focused on man understood as a citizen and interpreted through the dialectic as well as through the prospects of the city’s happiness, since for both of them man was a social animal. The political ethics of Plato and Aristotle does not endanger the political community with political bankruptcy. This political morality does not start from intransigent principles to reach a compromise that has already been surpassed by the previous negative dynamics. The Byzantine political morality oscillates between the individual and the totality. It is not governed by individualism but rather by communitarianism, which entails that it confirms the dynamics of unity within the city. The Byzantine political morals is imbued with an anticipation of the political crisis, it seeks to identify any negative developments and strives to avoid the political marginalization of the citizens who are likely to rebel against any autocratic government. The Byzantine political morality is, thus, not an idle and selfish political introversion, concerned merely with political crises, conflict scenarios and conspiracy theories, as it strives to come up with various solutions that should guarantee political balance.

The paper examines the relation of esotericism and oblique politics in the Byzantine philosopher Michael Psellos (11th century) on the basis of Eva De Vries’ study of the letters that Psellos addressed to the statesman Leo Paraspondylos. Traditionally, the name of Psellos signifies a revival of Neoplatonism in medieval Constantinople according to researchers like Chr. Zervos in the beginning of 20th century. Contemporary researchers such as Anthony Kaldellis and Stratis Papaioannou point to a more organic than speculative theorization in Psellos’ work while another contemporary scholar, Frederick Lauritzen, undertakes a synthesis of the two approaches. In any case, as this paper supports, it would be inadequate to consider the relation of esotericism to politics without referring to the evolution of the moral standards considered in a contextualized manner.

The article aims at suggesting the role of the Napoleonic supernatural in Balzac’s youth novel Le Centenaire (1822) as a counter-discourse to – and thus a locus of negotiation for – his later poetics of Realism. The investigation is held through a socio-poetical, close-reading based analysis of the revenant theme in both Le Centenaire and Le Colonel Chabert (1832-1844). First, the well-known political nature of Chabert as a revenant is associated to Bérigheld as his binary opposite: if Chabert embodies the uncanny persistence of the Empire during the Restauration, the centuries-old sorcerer who haunts Tullius, a young Napoleonic general, symbolizes Tullius’ monarchist temptation during the Empire. Nevertheless, the supernatural powers Tullius receives from Béringheld can be associated with the mythological features the Napoleonic soldiers accorded to their Emperor. If Chabert represent a counter-discourse to Tullius’ supernatural abilities, Balzac’s realism in the Comédie humaine can thus be considered as a reversal of the Napoleonic myth, so rooted in the authors early years.

According to Renan, the day of Marcus Aurelius’ death could be considered as the decisive moment in the downfall of the ancient civilization. He, thus, wonders: “If Marcus Aurelius, the unique emperor-philosopher, did not succeed in saving the world, who else, then, could have saved it?” He notes that the emperor’s death was followed by the succession to the throne of his corrupted son, Commodus, and his friends, who all were all ignorant. Renan observes that the emperor’s kindness could not have prevented the unfortunate fate that befell the Roman Empire after his death. What we have here is the perennial problem, already established in Plato, regarding the role of the philosopher-king in establishing a good state and educating good citizens. However, the case of Marcus Aurelius, as demonstrated by Renan in his book, shows the inability of philosophy to serve the real needs, which ultimately leads to disastrous and irreparable consequences. The present paper attempts to reconstruct the reasons for the unsuccessful application of philosophy, especially the philosophy of the Hellenistic era, to the administrative system of the Roman Empire. It is argued that the failure is mainly due to political, religious and cultural problems.

The aim of this paper is to present the interrelationship between politics and the representation of the patient’s body (pathography) in the novel of the Algerian contemporary activist and writer Boualem Sansal. In his novel, 2084. La fin du monde, whose title refers directly to Orwell’s work, Sansal creates a vision of a world dominated by religious totalitarianism. The purpose of this paper is to show how the affected body of the main character (and its recovery) becomes both a metaphor of opposition to the totalitarian system and a central structural, semantic and rhythmic figure of the text.

In this paper I will analyse taboo words that are characteristic of contemporary Hungarian politics on the basis of personal observations and data gathered via internet and in a newspaper supporting the ruling party and its emblematic figure, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. I will present words that are merely pejorative (e.g. liberális ‘liberal’) but may become taboo words in certain circumstances, while others (e.g. alaptörvény ‘fundamental law’ used instead of alkotmány ‘constitution’) appear to have all the major characteristics of taboo words. It is by no means surprising to find that political taboo words are not the same in the two camps, the one supporting Orbán’s government and its opposition.

The article aims to analyse the Mediterranean city as a labyrinthine space based on the trilogy Drifting Cities (1961– 1965) and on the novel Lost Spring (1976) by Stratis Tsirkas (1911–1980). In order to represent space-time in a state of instability and crisis, with that space-time being Jerusalem, Cairo and Alexandria during the Second World War, and Athens during the socio-political disturbances of July 1965, the author resorts to the myth of the labyrinth. This myth evokes, on the one hand, the maze-like structure of an unknown urban landscape, and, on the other hand, socio-political disorder. As Mediterranean cities, Romanesque cities are hybrid and complex. For this reason, they appear as an “in-between” of the real and the imaginary, of the past and the present. It is by relying on the concept of thirdspace (Edward Soja), that the complex character of the Mediterranean city will be highlighted. However, each of these cities has its own specific features: Jerusalem appears as a chessboard where secret agents and obscure organisations engage in innumerable parties to satisfy their interests, Cairo presents itself as a political and social labyrinth, Alexandria refers to a labyrinth of intrigue and machinations and Athens is the home of the monsters of power.

Since the publication his novel Archaeology of chaos (in love) in 2007, Mustapha Benfodil has applied himself to implementing the program set out by one of his characters: the DECONSTRUCTION OF THE NATIONAL NARRATIVE ORDER. His latest novel, Alger, journal intense, published in September of 2019, realises this project. As in his other texts, Benfodil challenges the rules of languages, genres, and even discursive and editorial forms. With jubilation, anger and humour, once again he puts writing in crisis to tell the story of Algeria that has been the victim of a terrible series of crises since October 1988. Twelve years later, Benfodil’s unstifled writing style captures the “historical chaos” from which post-colonial Algeria is trying to recover.
