    Opis:
    The first part of the paper concentrates on the motive of desire, strictly related to the concept of will, in two stories from Les Ombres sanglantes [The Bloody Shadows] (1820) by J. P. R. Cuisin. Afterwards, the theme of power, considered firstly in the physical aspect and then in its supernatural dimension, is analyzed in further four stories. The article concludes with thoughts on the literary objectives of Cuisin’s book and on its potentially caricatural side.
    Pierwsza część artykułu skupia się na motywie pożądania, ściśle powiązanym z pojęciem woli, w dwóch historiach należących do zbioru Les Ombres sanglantes [Krwawe cienie] (1820) J. P. R. Cuisina. Następnie poddany analizie zostaje temat mocy, rozważany początkowo w aspekcie fizycznym, a następnie w wymiarze nadprzyrodzonym. Zakończenie tekstu poświęcone jest refleksjom nad literackimi motywacjami Cuisina i nad potencjalnie karykaturalną stroną utworu.

    Opis:
    La présente étude a pour objectif de se pencher sur le thème de l’amour dans Les Ombres sanglantes (1820) de J. P. R. Cuisin. Quatre histoires de ce recueil seront analysées dans ce but : La demeure d’un parricide, ou le triomphe du remords ; L’Infanticide, ou la fausse vertu démasquée ; La guérite de la religieuse, ou la vestale prévaricatrice ; et Niobé, ou l’élève de la nature. On s’intéressera particulièrement aux crimes décrits par l’auteur dans chacun de ces récits : le parricide, l’infanticide, la rupture des vœux religieux et l’inceste. La manière violente, corrosive et parfois caricaturale dont les différentes relations sentimentales, souvent de nature illicite, voire pathologique, sont peintes dans Les Ombres sanglantes diverge considérablement de la vision de l’amour typique du roman noir tel qu’il se pratique en France à la fin du XVIIIe siècle et au début du XIXe, et marque clairement l’avènement du genre frénétique de plus en plus présent dans la littérature française de cette période.
    The aim of this paper is to explore the theme of love in Les Ombres sanglantes [The Bloody Shadows] (1820) by J. P. R. Cuisin. Four stories from the volume were chosen for this purpose, including “La demeure d’un parricide, ou le triomphe du remords”; “L’Infanticide, ou la fausse vertu démasquée”; “La guérite de la religieuse, ou la vestale prévaricatrice” and “Niobé, ou l’élève de la nature”. The analysis of these texts revolves around the crimes described by the author in each of the stories, namely parricide, infanticide, breach of religious vows and incest. The violent, destructive and sometimes grotesque manner in which these various sentimental relationships, often of an illicit or even pathological nature, are portrayed in Les Ombres sanglantes diverges considerably from the vision of love typical for the Gothic novel in France at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries, clearly marking the advent of the frenetic genre, more and more present in the French literature of this period.

    August Strindberg is considered the herald of modern drama. His protean work, which goes from naturalism to mystical aesthetics, anticipating surrealism and the theater of the absurd, even today defies, as it did in his epoch, by its brutal or cruel aspects. Without any doubt, the origin of a certain mistrust towards the author of Inferno would be his declared misogyny. It could be criticized on this subject for disclosing prejudices against women, which in the form of stereotypes, survive to this day. Nevertheless, many French playwrights are inspired by the infernal conflict between man and woman that the Swede describes with a stripping frenzy. Indeed, by analyzing the plays of the French theater of the first half of the 20th century, we notice that some authors take up the motive of the “struggle of the sexes” that will be reworked or “modernized” in their own way. It is interesting in this regard to study the vehicular discourse of clichés on women, found in the works of writers such as Henri-René Lenormand (A Secret Life), Jean Anouilh (Waltz of the Toreadors) and Jean Vauthier (Captain Bada). While none of these playwrights has ever openly declared their hostility to the so-called weaker sex, their texts provide a valuable reservoir of common ground on male-female relationships, which in most cases have not lost their actuality.
