Opis:
The paper presents a methodology for evaluating the Best Available Techniques Not Entailing Excessive Costs (BATNEEC) options for the management of by-products from biomass combustion - ash. Biomass ash BA was collected from Green Energy Block in Połaniec (Poland). Four variant of BA disposal were analysed: 1st – the storage of BA on conventional municipal waste landfills; 2nd, 3rd, 4th - use of BA for fertilisers production (2nd – 70% of BA, 3rd - 45% of BA, 4th - 90% of BA). Technical, environmental and economic consequences of the actions in the field of waste management technology were considered. BATNEEC evaluation indicated that the collected BA on dump (1st variant) is technical, environmental and economic inefficient, this solution has received lowest score - 29 points. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th variants have received 124, 113 and 30 points, respectively. This indicates that there are quantitative restrictions on substitution of nutrients in mineral fertilisers. Due to the possibility of secondary pollution during waste usage in agriculture, the use of BA in fertiliser products requires compliance with environmental rules - only the nutrient rich and rather heavy metal poor fractions of BA shall be used for fertilising and soil improvement purposes.

Opis:
The growing demand for electricity produced from renewable sources and the development of new technologies for the combustion of biomass, arose a growing interest on the possible coupling of thermoelectric modules with stove-fireplaces. The current thermoelectric generators have a solid structure, do not produce noise, do not require maintenance and can be used for the recovery of waste heat or excess, at the same time they hold a very low conversion efficiency and they need an adequate cooling system. Nevertheless, they still hold a cost, which is still too high to make them attractive. Nonetheless, if the modules are applied to a heat source which otherwise would be wasted, the attractiveness of the solution certainly rises. In this study, a thermodynamic analysis of a stove-fireplace is presented, considering both combustion process and the flame – walls heat transfer of the. A design solution for a concentrator device to funnel the wasted heat from the fireplace to the thermo-electric modules is also presented.

Opis:
Current world economic development is heavily dependent on fossil fuels that are nonrenewable and are main emitter of the greenhouse gases, leading to resources to be exhausted on one side, and the earth being warmer on the other. This in turn creates a shrinking bottleneck to economic development and wealth generation. Therefore, in pursuit of a sustainable future, a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy should be taken essentially. Biomass is an indispensable element for development of sustainable energy because it is the only renewable energy source that can be used to produce liquid fuel. In the paper, the sustainability of energy from biomass has been discussed, with the focus on an identification of its benefits and challenges. The necessity of deployment of biomass energy and its progress in China and Poland have also been described.
