Opis:
Lower Silesia hosts important European nephrite deposits of Jordanów and less-known of Złoty Stok. Nephrite artifacts were discovered in archaeological sites dated back to the Neolithic period, across Eurasia. Especially artifacts found in Poland, Italy and Bulgaria may originate from Polish nephrites. Nowadays, only one artifact is precisely linked to Jordanów. Petrographic study of nephrites and chemical analyses of constituents by means of EMPA allow accurate identification of the nephrites. The characteristic phases of Jordanów tremolite nephrite are rotated and cataclased diopside porphyroblasts with pressure shadows, chlorite layers and nests with interlocking non-pseudomorphic texture and prehnite veins. The presence of hydrogrossular, grossular, titanite, apatite with monazite inclusions, and zircon with pleochroic haloe is typical. Chlorites are usually represented by penninite, and minor clinochlore and diabantite. The characteristic features of Złoty Stok actinolite nephrite are löllingite and diopside crystals usually visible by the naked eye, with the presence of quartz and carbonates. Löllingite is chemically inhomogeneous and gold bearing. Most of the mineralogical-petrological features can be obtained using non-destructive methods.

Opis:
The historical arsenic and gold-ore operation at the Złoty Stok mine generated around 1 500 000 tonnes of wastes. The gold-bearing post-flotation tailing dumps, waste slag heaps, mined rock and arsenic roasting spoils (cinders) from mining of metamorphogenic, hydro -thermal As-Au deposits have been examined to evaluate their gold grade. The waste material is dominated by calc-silicate skarn, dolomitic marbles, serpentinites and As-Au ore fragments. Sulfides are mainly loellingite, arsenopyrite and pyrrothite with some pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena. In oxidized material, sulfides are rare or absent. Over 1000 samples of post-flotation waste muds and three bulk samples of mined rock spoils were analyzed. Only tailings show high concentrations of Au (0.8–20.1 ppm) and As (1.0–2.6 wt.%). Anaverage contents of other metals (in ppm) are: Cu — 177.5; Pb — 212.2; Zn — 127.5; Ag — 0.38; Pt — 0.006; Pd — 0.001. Analytical results indicate that concentrations of these elements are very low along profiles, with no obvious relation ship between content and depth. Average gold content of 0.3 ppm in waste slags disqualifies this material as a source of gold. The re main ing re sources of gold in the flotation tailings and waste heaps are estimated at as high as 2370 kg. The main pollutant is As with contents exceeding 52 100 ppm in the mined rock spoils.

Opis:
Due to a low level of erosion the Variscan (Carboniferous–Mississippian) Kłodzko–Złoty Stok (KZS) granitoid pluton and its metamorphic rock cover are unique examples of the ore mineralisation distribution pattern around a pluton. The KZS pluton formed from I-type magmas. It is composed mostly of high-K, metaluminous, biotite- and hornblende-rich granitoids of various compositions ranging from granodiorite to monzonite. The ore mineralisation in the KZS shows specific zonation that reflects interaction between post-magmatic mineralising fluids and country rocks of different composition. In the KZS pluton and its surroundings the mineralisation reveals high-temperature Ti-W oxides and As-Fe sulphide-arsenides plus Fe-oxides which are replaced outwards by Cu-Fe-Pb-Zn sulphides and subsequently, in the marginal parts of the pluton, by the Pb-Sb-Fe sulphide mineralisation. The specific elements and the isotopic composition of sulphur in ore minerals indicate that the metal-bearing postmagmatic-metamorphic hydrothermal fluids, despite their strong affinities to the KZS hybrid magmatic fluids, show also an influence of variable composition of country rocks. Variable alteration processes: hornfelsitisation, skarnisation, dolomitisation, serpentinitisation, pyroxenisation, biotitisation, K-feldspatisation, silicification, berezitisation, carbonatisation, prehinitisation, chloritisation, epidotisation, sericitisation, albitisation and sulphidisation developed along contacts of various rock types within the country rocks. In more fractured zones, transported elements were preferentially trapped by calcareous (Ca-rich) metamorphic rocks. Moreover, along the direct contact between granitoids and calcareous rocks a high temperature auriferous skarns with magnetite-pyrrhotite or/and löllingite-arsenopyrite mineralisation were formed. There are positive correlations between organic matter and Fe2O3 and MgO contents in skarns, suggesting remobilization of organic matter by hydrothermal fluids released during serpentinisation. The organic matter and carbonate samples have very variable δ13C and δ18O values. Most probably these are the result of isotopic re-equilibration between minerals under high temperatures. On the intimate contact of granitoids with less permeable amphibolitic hornfelses a high temperature titanite-scheelite mineralisation of veinlet-impregnation type occurred, while thermal and metasomatic alteration of the enveloping more permeable sandstones developed away from direct contact with granites, causing the formation of pyrite-rich beresites. As a rule, different types of sulphide ore mineralisation contain refractory gold captured by arsenopyrite, löllingite and/or pyrite. Moreover, the formation of contact-metasomatic ore mineralisation was accompanied by ore precipitation in veins and stockworks at a wide temperature range from 480 to 150°C during early and late fracturing stages. The younger stages also revealed variable concentration of gold. All those observations strongly indicate that the whole KZS pluton and its aureole was fertile in gold.

Opis:
The literature on exchange rate forecasting is vast. Many researchers have tested whether implications of theoretical economic models or the use of advanced econometric techniques can help explain future movements in exchange rates. The results of the empirical studies for major world currencies show that forecasts from a naive random walk tend to be comparable or even better than forecasts from more sophisticated models. In the case of the Polish zloty, the discussion in the literature on exchange rate forecasting is scarce. This article fills this gap by testing whether non-linear time series models are able to generate forecasts for the nominal exchange rate of the Polish zloty that are more accurate than forecasts from a random walk. Our results confirm the main findings from the literature, namely that it is dificult to outperform a naive random walk in exchange rate forecasting contest.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine arsenie contents in soils of allotment gardens in the tovvn Zloty Stok, which was formerly the greatest European centre of arsenie industry, as well as to assess ecological risk caused by soil contamination. Two complexes of allotment gardens, where soil samples were collected from the depths of 5-15 cm and 30-40 cm, were investigated. The soils were rich in organic matter and indicated favourable sorption properties. Total contents of arsenie in soils of both garden complexes were extremely high (vvith the mean 232 mg o kg-1 in the surface layers and 281 mg o kg-1 in subsurface layers), and exeeeded by manifold the value of Polish soil quality standard established as 20 mg o kg-1. Actually soluble forms of arsenic, determined by extraction with 0.05 mol o dm-3 (NH4)2S04, proved to be generally Iow, ie 2.0 % of total on average. At the same time, potentially soluble arsenic content, mainly adsorbed on organic matter and iron oxides, determined by extraction with 0.05 mol o dm-1 NH4H2PO4, was relatively high, in the range: 14.0-136 mg o kg-1 (with the mean 17.2 % of total As). The results indicate that certain environmental risk exists and allotment gardens in Zloty Stok should be excluded at least from a home production of vegetables and other edible plants.

Opis:
The stability and maintenance of the age record of monazite during post-magmatic processes were studied in granitic and host metasedimentary rocks from the Sudetes (SW Poland). Unaltered monazite in the Kłodzko–Złoty Stok granitoid provided a Th-U-total Pb age of 329 ± 5 Ma, which was related to the late stage of pluton emplacement. In contrast, monazite in the Jawornik granitoid remained unaltered or was partially replaced by secondary phases, including (1) allanite, epidote and, occasionally, apatite; (2) cheralite, allanite and a mixture of clays, Fe oxides and possible unknown rare earth element (REE) phases; and (3) K-feldspar and cheralite with subsequent formation of titanite. Different alteration products on the thin section scale indicate the local character of the post-magmatic processes affecting monazite induced by alkali-rich fluids. The altered and unaltered monazite grains both yielded a Th-U-total Pb age of 343 ± 4 Ma. The Th-U-total Pb ages of the monazite in the accompanying metasedimentary rocks thermally affected by intruding magmas were also constrained. In the paragneiss in contact with the Jawornik granitoid, the unaltered monazite and monazite partially replaced by allanite yielded an age of 344 ± 5 Ma. The monazite from the mica schist, farther from the contact with the granitoids, exhibited an age of 336 ± 4.5 Ma. The 344–336 Ma ages exhibited a record of monazite (re)growth during prolonged Variscan metamorphism. The predominant early Viséan ages constrain the timing of the development of the Złoty Stok Skrzynka Shear Zone and the emplacement of the Jawornik granitoid intrusion. The age results, which are consistent with previous geochronology, indicate that the partial alteration of the monazite did not affect the internal domains or the maintenance of the monazite ages. Thus, this study reveals that monazite geochronology can provide meaningful data in crystalline rocks affected by fluid-induced post-magmatic processes.

Opis:
Currently, the European Commission puts emphasis on supporting collaboration between universities and business. There are many possible ways to create a strong relationship between both these parties. Positive results of such cooperation lead to increased competitiveness of the global market and, in consequence, bring significant growth of innovation. The cooperation between research-to-research (R2R) and research-to-business (R2B) is analysed. The paper shows how the IT technology can be used to support and stimulate it. In our University we proposed a two-step strategy. Firstly, we tried to improve collaboration among scientists in order to develop R2R activities. Secondly, we focused on R2B projects that stimulate promising scientists to take part in various innovative activities carried out in cooperation with the industry representatives. Based on some well-known good practices a special Internet platform was designed and implemented to support such a strategy. Its name is the “Bridge of Knowledge”. The platform architecture, its functionality and some other aspects of the development process are described. The platform was developed and introduced at the Gdańsk University of Technology. It has been available online for nearly 2 years now and it has been attracting increasing numbersof new visitors and returning users. Several use cases of cooperation between R2R and R2Bwere analysed and described with the use of advanced analytic tools and on the basis of the organisation’s resources. The idea of the Bridge of Knowledge platform is to gather and share resources not only from one university. The architecture of the platform focuses on a wide and easy interoperability. Other universities can share their resources without any additional cost.
