Opis:
Objectives: The presented study explored health beliefs and experiences as well as health education needs of low-educated employees (LEEs) (incomplete primary, primary, lower secondary and basic vocational education) in comparison to those with higher education (secondary and tertiary education) in four European countries: Latvia, Poland, Slovenia and Spain. The main aim was to identify a specificity of low-educated employees (LEEs) by capturing their opinions, experiences, attitudes and needs concerning health education. Material and Methods: The sample consisted of 1691 individuals with the status of an employee (approximately 400 respondents in each of 4 countries participating in the project). The respondents were aged 25-54 (both the control group and the target group consisted in 1/3 of the following age groups: 25-34, 35-44 and 45-54). The respondents were interviewed during the years 2009 and 2010 with a structured questionnaire concerning their health, health behaviours as well as educational needs concerning health education. Results: The study revealed substantial differences in the attitudes of people from this group concerning methodology of health education. LEEs prefer more competitions and campaigns and less written educational materials in comparison to those with higher education. Additionally, they more often perceive a fee, longer time, necessity to take part in a knowledge test and a concern that their health will be checked as factors that can discourage them from taking part in a health training. On the other hand, LEEs can by encouraged to take part in such a training by a media broadcast concerning the event, snacks or lottery during the training, or financial incentives. Conclusions: The results of the study proved the need for specific health education guidelines to conduct health education for low-educated employees. These guidelines should take in account the sources of health education preferred by LEEs as well as the factors that can encourage/discourage their participation in trainings concerning health.

Opis:
Background: This paper presents the opinions of Polish employees on how they think of and use the Internet in the context of health, including occupational health. The outcomes show the usefulness of this medium in the ongoing activities regarding health education and promotion in this target group. Material and Methods: The analysis focuses on the empirical data from the first representative research on the working population in Poland, conducted in 2012 among 1012 respondents, using the structured interview method. Results: Employees believe that the Internet plays a positive role in helping employees stay healthy. They appreciate its importance as a tool to support people with similar health problems and the alternative source of information on health issues. Workers are mostly unhappy with information overload about health and difficulty in identifying the reliable ones. Significant number of employees expect the websites expert control and even perpetrators' punishment. Around half of the workers look for the needed information on the Internet and the same number get acquainted with it, if they come across it by chance. The study shows that there was a small employees' interest regarding data on occupational health hazards, how to counteract them and legal regulations on health at work. If it was a case though, they used the web. Employees expect greater use of the Internet in their workplaces regarding occupational health issues than ever before. Conclusions: It was found that there are necessary foundations to treat the Internet as an influencing tool in health education and promotion campaigns aimed at employees. Med Pr 2014;65(1):1–13
Wstęp: Artykuł prezentuje opinie pracowników w Polsce o Internecie i informacje o sposobie korzystania z niego w zakresie pozyskiwania wiedzy dotyczącej sfery zdrowia i choroby, w tym zdrowia zawodowego. Aim: The main aim of this article is to identify negative health consequences resulting from work overload and lack of work-life balance, as well as to present characteristics of positive healthy behaviors in the workplace as counteracting strategies. The paper is a part of the discussion on the concept of corporate wellness which forms the basis for the development of organization’s health culture.Design / Research methods: The paper is based on a review of literature concerned with the factors influencing worker welfare. Moreover, it presents two case studies on comprehensive health programs implemented by Mars Poland and the Belgian branch of Protect & Gamble. Conclusions / findings: Based on the review of foreign and domestic literature, the authors propose a model describing the relationship between individual variables impacting worker welfare. In this model, it is assumed that the interaction between work and life, and workers’ healthy behaviors such as physical activity and rest after work (sleep) are crucial to workers’ regeneration.Originality / value of the article: The value of the paper lies in the interdisciplinary approach to the development of worker well-being. Apart from the perspective of human resources management, the outlined concept also takes into account the issues relating to workers’ mental and physical health.Implications of the research: The theoretical assumptions presented in the paper will become a starting point for a research project to be conducted on Polish enterprises. Its objective will be to identify the possibilities of counteracting the negative effects of workload congestion through the promotion of healthy behaviors in the workplace and support of workers in their creation of a positive work-life interaction.

Opis:
Objectives Tobacco smoking is a major organizational, economical, and public relations-related (PR-related) problem for the company. Moreover, it is an important health determinant of the working population. The paper reports the results of the research which analyzed the current state and the tobacco control activities’ transformations undertaken by Polish employers between 2003 and 2015. Material and Methods Data comes from the research performed in 2006, 2010 and 2015, involving random- selected representative samples of Polish enterprises, employing no fewer than 50 employees. The sampling pattern covered location and classification of activities (excluding public administration, national defense, social security, education, health care and social assistance sectors). Consecutive interviews were conducted with representatives of 611, 1002 and 1000 companies, respectively. Results The companies improved their compliance with the national regulations on smoking in the workplace. The strategy for limiting smoking in public places resulted in a steady increase in the number of companies (11%, 23%, 38%, respectively) that introduced smoking ban. Approximately in every second company, smoking was allowed only in the smoking room or outdoors. Voluntary activities (e.g., education and support for employees wishing to cease smoking) were very rarely undertaken by medium and large companies (several percent) and since 2010, when the law had become more restrictive, such tendency reinforced. Employers also were seldom interested in the prevalence of tobacco smoking among their personnel, its consequences for the company’s functioning and the effectiveness of the implemented tobacco control measures. Conclusions National anti-smoking policy caused that companies were more focused on smoking-bans at the expense of education and support for those who wanted to cease smoking. Although this contributes to reducing secondary smoking in the workplace, the companies’ potential to become a major agent for tobacco control policies is neglected while the downward trend of smoking in the Polish society has slowed down. Economic success of companies is related to the rate of absenteeism and the rate of fluctuation, but also to the subjective experience of the employees. During economic difficult situations, enterprises wanted and had to motivate their employees to maintain their productivity and motivation to work. Investments in work health promotion-measures resulted to be a good way to do this. Workplace health promotion turned out to be a suitable way to boost and/or maintain the motivation of employees. Authors of the article give an overview of work health promotion (WHP) in Germany (especially in small and medium enterprises) and analyze implementation strategies, costs, key-success-factors and obstacles before or during the implementation of WHP-measures.

Countries in transition, such as Serbia, have been going through obligatory system reforms, including the reform of the healthcare system. As a rule, occupational health becomes marginalized by the authorities who decide on medical care. In spite of the fact that this branch of medicine cares for working population that mostly carries the burden of transition, when material situation equals the existential minimum, its potentials are not recognized. On the other hand, the World Health Organization makes a remark that such population’s health is undermined now more than ever, and adopts a binding global plan for member countries and their experts in occupational health to take urgent measures for overall working people’s health according to their needs. It seems that former work method of biomedicine specialists could not realize such ambition. This paper discusses the possibilities of occupational health future orientation toward holistic medicine, for the sake of workers’ well-being and better quality of their lives, then creation of more humane society and vocational affirmation. Health promotion at workplace and salutogenic concept may have crucial roles. This concept is a huge challenge for academic public and vocational practitioners in poor countries in transition that are already burdened with the current economic and financial crisis. Each in their own way, helped by self-education and education, without big material investments, together they may take their countries to the road of health, the road still rarely taken, yet more secure.

Objectives The aging of the workforce is an issue that calls for concrete measures to promote the health of older workers. This study reports on the results of the European “ProHealth65+” research project interventions conducted in Poland in relation to workplace health promotion for older workers (WHPOW) and the institutions involved in these programs. Material and Methods A three-stage search of peer-reviewed and grey literature on the WHPOW in Poland. Results A total of 59 WHPOW programs were retrieved in Poland in the observation period (2000–2015). Most of these aimed at improving the Qualification and Training or at the Work Climate and attitudes toward older workers. The promotion, organization, and funding of these activities were carried out mainly by supra-national and governmental bodies, enterprises and employers, and educational and trainee institutions. Conclusions Although there is great commitment to the medical surveillance of workers on the part of the Polish occupational health service, our search detected a relatively low number of the WHPOW initiatives. Greater efforts should be made to introduce strategies for addressing aging of the workforce. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2018;31(6):753–761

ObjectivesCardiovascular and metabolic disorders constitute major health problems in the working populations in Europe. The aim of this project was to evaluate the health condition of workers employed in a Polish research and medical institution, and then to establish the necessary preventive actions by creating a modern model of occupational healthcare integrated with civilization disease (CivD) prevention.Material and MethodsOverall, 100 workers voluntarily participated in a health program for CivD prevention during mandatory prophylactic examinations. Data from these examinations was collected in a system of electronic documentation to enable the analysis of the workers’ health condition and risk factors of CivDs.ResultsWomen accounted for 72% of the employees who voluntarily participated in the prevention program, and 80% of the subjects had university education. As regards the health condition, 27% of the patients had elevated systolic, and 23% diastolic, blood pressure, and 21% had an abnormal fasting glucose level. Stressful job was an important factor correlated with an excessive body mass index, diastolic blood pressure, as well as total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Smoking, sedentary work and a lack of physical activity were significant factors for abdominal obesity. Generally, 94% of the program participants required some further interventions in lifestyle, diagnostics or treatment.ConclusionsCivilization disease prevention should focus on increasing physical activity both in leisure time and at the workplace as far as practicable. There is a need for implementing projects leading to occupational stress reduction and smoking cessation. Men as well as workers with vocational and elementary education need to be recruited for prevention programs dedicated to employees.

Background: This paper presents the prevalence of health promotion in workplaces in Poland. It characterises the undertaken actions, their rationale and perceived obstacles. It analyses the diversity of these phenomena in the companies of different financial soundness and level of employment. Material and Methods: The study was conducted with the use of Computer Assisted Telephone Interview in 2010 on the representative national sample of 1002 workplaces hiring more than 50 employees. The data was compared with the results of the survey conducted in 2006, with the use of a Paper and Pencil interview on 611 similar companies. Results: Both studies have shown that 40% of the companies are concerned about their employees' health to a greater extent than they are obliged to by the law. At the same time, more than 80% of the companies have been introducing various modifications and health-oriented actions without definite health intentions. Most companies improve their physical working environment, organise/sponsor medical services, sports activities and try to reduce stress and smoking. Managers have increased their awareness of business benefits received from health promotion. They have displayed more personal involvement in health promotion implementation. The most often mentioned obstacles have included limited financial resources and little interest of employees regarding health issues. Conclusions: The larger and wealthier the company is, the more often health promotion in the company is performed. Such a company is more convinced about an increase in its activities and has more reasons to care about health. Unequal access to health promotion of workers in different companies may contribute to an increase in health inequalities in the working population. Med Pr 2013;64(6):743–754
Wprowadzenie: W artykule przedstawiono stopień rozpowszechnienia promocji zdrowia w zakładach pracy w Polsce, scharakteryzowano podejmowaną aktywność, powody jej realizacji oraz wskazywane przeszkody. Pokazano zróżnicowanie tych zjawisk w firmach o różnej kondycji ekonomicznej oraz wielkości zatrudnienia. Materiał i metody: Badanie przeprowadzono w oparciu o wywiad telefoniczny standaryzowany, wspomagany komputerowo (Computer Assisted Telephone Interview - CATI) w 2010 r. w ogólnopolskiej próbie reprezentatywnej 1002 zakładów pracy, w których zatrudniano powyżej 50 pracowników. Dane zostały porównane z wynikami sondażu z 2006 r., przeprowadzonego metodą standaryzowanego wywiadu bezpośredniego (Paper and Pencil Interview - PAPI) wśród 611 podobnych firm. Najczęściej wskazywane przeszkody w realizacji działań to ograniczone środki finansowe i małe zainteresowanie pracowników zdrowiem. Med. Opis:
Objectives The objectives of these investigations completed on workplaces in the Hungarian mining industry were to characterize the physiological strain of workers by means of work pulse and to examine the effects of work-related psychological factors. Material and Methods Continuous heart rate (HR) recording was completed on 71 miners over a total of 794 shifts between 1987 and 1992 in mining plants of the Hungarian mining industry using a 6-channel recorder – Bioport (ZAK, Germany). The work processes were simultaneously documented by video recording along with drawing up the traditional ergonomic workday schedule. All workers passed health evaluation for fitness for work. The effects of different psychological factors (simulated danger, “instrument stress,” presence of managers, and effect of prior involvement in accidents as well as different mining technologies and work place illumination) on the work pulse were evaluated. The statistical analysis was completed using SPSS software (version 13.0, SPSS Inc., USA). Results The work-related physiological strain differed between work places with different mining technologies in groups of 12–18 workers. The work pulse was lowest in bauxite mining (ΔHR = 22±8.9 bpm) and highest in drift drilling in dead rock with electric drilling machine (ΔHR = 30±6.9 bpm). During sham alarm situation the work pulse was significantly higher than during normal activities with the same physical task (ΔHR = 36.7±4.8 bpm vs. 25.8±1.6 bpm, p < 0.001). When work was performed under different psychological stress, the work pulse was consistently higher, while improving the work place illumination decreased the physiological strain appreciably (ΔHR (median, 25–75 percentiles) = 23, 20–26 bmp vs. 28, 25–31.3 bpm, p < 0.001). Conclusions Recording the heart rate during whole-shift work along with the work conditions gives reliable results and helps isolating factors that contribute to increased strain. The results can be used to implement preventive and health promotion measures.
