Opis:
Solving workflow management system’s Distributed Computing Infrastructure (DCI) incompatibility and their workflow interoperability issues are very challenging and complex tasks. Workflow management systems (and therefore their workflows, workflow developers and also their end-users) are bounded tightly to some limited number of supported DCIs, and efforts required to allow additional DCI support. In this paper we are specifying a concept how to enable generic DCI compatibility for grid workflow management systems (such as ASKALON, MOTEUR, gUSE/WS-PGRADE, etc.) on job and indirectly on workflow level. To enable DCI compatibility among the different workflow management systems we have developed the DCI Bridge software solution. In this paper we will describe its internal architecture, provide usage scenarios to show how the developed service resolve the DCI interoperability issues between various middleware types. The generic DCI Bridge service enables the execution of jobs onto the existing major DCI platforms (such as Service Grids (Globus Toolkit 2 and 4, gLite, ARC, UNICORE), Desktop Grids, Web services, or even cloud based DCIs).

Opis:
Today’s companies are able to automate the enforcement of Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) duties through the use of workflow management technology. This approach requires to specify activities that are combined to workflow models for EH&S enforcement duties. In order to meet given safety regulations these activities are to be completed correctly and within given deadlines. Otherwise, activity failures emerge which may lead to breaches against safety regulations. A novel domain-specific workflow meta data model is proposed. The model enables a system to detect and predict activity failures through the use of data about the company, failure statistics, and activity proxies. Since the detection and prediction methods are based on the evaluation of constraints specified on EH&S regulations, a system approach is proposed that builds on the integration of a Workflow Management System (WMS) with an EH&S Compliance Information System. Main principles of the failure detection and prediction are described. For EH&S managers the system shall provide insights into the current failure situation. This can help to prevent and mitigate critical situations such as safety enforcement measures that are behind their deadlines. As a result a more reliable enforcement of safety regulations can be achieved.

The article offers information on the application of lean principles to achieve continuous flow in third party logistics providers (3PLs). It mentions that lean management principles and practices have been traditionally applied to manufacturing systems and try to make products flow through the supply chain without interruptions. Topics discussed include lean management of flow in logistics operations, conditions for continuous workflow and empirical research design.

Opis:
The main challenge in the development of the CANDY Framework, a CAD system for Telecommunication Networks, is integration and interoperability of newly developed and existing design tools under an integrated network CAD workflow. The main problem of many existing workflow management solutions is their heavy-weight approach. A Workflow Management System has to provide an adequate trade-off between sufficient flexibility and consideration of the specifics of project and CAD work. Related approaches like PNML, XPDL, WS-BPEL, ARIS/SAP PI and multiple others exhibit absence of the wished flexibility due to their generality, complexity and/or binding to a specific platform. In contrast, this paper discusses a flexible Workflow Management system for CAD of Telecommunication Networks.
Główne wyzwanie projektu ramowego CANDY dotyczy opracowania systemu CAD przeznaczonego do projektowania sieci telekomunikacyjnych.

Opis:
Semi-structural data tend to be problematic due to the sparsity of their attributes and due to the fact that, regardless of their type, they are immensely diverse. This means that data storage is a challenge, especially when the data contained within a relational database – often a strict requirement defined in advance. In this paper, we present a thoroughly described concept of a repository that is capable of storing and processing semi-structural data. Based on this concept, we establish a database model comprising the architecture and the tools needed to search the data and build relevant processors. The processor described may assign roles and dispatch tasks between the users. We demonstrate how the capacities of this repository are capable of overcoming current limitations by creating a system for facilitated digitization of scientific resources. In addition, we show that the repository in question is suitable for general use, and, as such, may be adapted to any domains in which semi-structural data are processed, without any additional work required.

Opis:
Background Lean healthcare management is an innovative approach to process management in healthcare organizations. Despite that the Lean principles have been increasingly recognized worldwide as a tool to boost organizational performance, improve the quality of care and curb waste, the Lean methodology can be difficult to implement in some countries. This study seeks to identify the facilitators of and barriers to the implementation of Lean in the healthcare system in Poland. Material and Methods A public consultation was held among 318 representatives of stakeholder groups in the healthcare system in Poland. Data was collected using validated self-administered questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics 25 software. Results The study revealed that a large share of respondents believed that the awareness of the existing organizational deficiencies in work practices among stakeholders can greatly facilitate the implementation of Lean in the healthcare system in Poland (50.9%, p < 0.05). The main barriers to the deployment of Lean include lack of awareness of the Lean methodology and its benefits (76.1%, p < 0.001); insufficient institutional support (43.7%), and lack of funding for Lean solutions (32.4%). Conclusions Gaps in the medical curricula and education programs for healthcare professionals concerning the latest process management solutions in healthcare should be addressed in order to raise awareness of the benefits of cooperation with and the active involvement of Lean experts in applying “lean” ideas to improve the organizational performance in healthcare. It is also necessary for policy makers to be aware of the benefits of contemporary process management in healthcare and to support its implementation. Med Pr. 2023;74(1):1–8
