    The general aim of this outline is to indicate the diverse merits of women’s personal document literature for the study of women’s independence discourse. The specific objective is to identify the various points of view (understood as a linguistic category) that emerge in the texts regarding war and to reconstruct the image of war that emerges from the narratives of the female authors. Consequently, it can be said that the value of women’s personal document literature for researching women’s independence discourse is determined not only by its different perspective (presumably distinct from the male or official perspective) but also by the internal diversity within this discourse, which is connected to the broadly understood ideology.

    This article focuses on the current wave of the cultural war in Poland which was triggered after the government’s decision to ratify the European Council Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. It examines the conservative, nationalist-religious discourse present in two daily mainstream Polish newspapers, Gazeta Wyborcza and Rzeczpospolita. This article begins with a description of the position of the Catholic Church in Poland, its role and main discursive strategies used in the debate on the Convention. Then it underlines the significance of the nationalist-religious discourse for developing gender equality policies, focusing on an essentialist vision of feminity and masculinity, importance of the family as a private matter and an influential force and diversion from cultural and structural factors that foster violence.

    Midrash, a Polish social and cultural profile magazine (published since April 1997), is a monthly journal that is a representative of the so-called ‘minor press’. The magazine is connected with the Midrash Library publishing house. Its founder was Konstanty Gebert and the current editor is Piotr Paziński. The articles of Midrash magazine give answers to such questions as: How are women described and treated in modern patriarchal Judaism culture? In what context is it possible to talk about issues connected with women and Zionism. Midrash magazine also deals with a positive interpretation and presentation of women via the multitude of interviews and articles concerning strong, talented, and determined women. Despite their hard lives these women were and are able to create successful careers and wonderful families. Their voices are an important element in discussions that refer to culture, faith, and historical heritage. The image of the woman as presented by Midrash will be confronted with the cultural recognition of the woman in the Jewish community. This article will use quantitative analysis (the linguistic method and literature studies) with help from the qualitative case study research method.

    This article considers how the long-standing American cultural tradition of sentimentality and its affective power can be discursively utilized by contemporary Black women in the public contexts. Using the concept of sentimental political storytelling as discussed by Rebecca Wanzo, I analyze three award speeches given by Viola Davis – a popular and acclaimed African American actress whose speeches generate significant public and media attention. Framing Davis’s speeches within the Black feminist epistemology, I draw on the conventions of sentimental storytelling proposed by Wanzo to argue that Davis is an example of a Black woman skilfully using sentimentality to gain affective agency and mobilize sympathy from mainstream public while at the same time narrativizing African Americans’ lived experiences to have their humanity and their struggle recognized today. Given the continued prioritization of White female suffering in the American media over stories of Black women’s struggle, the ways in which Black women can discursively utilize sentimentality to gain affective agency and negotiate self-definition in interactional public contexts is of significant sociolinguistic interest.

    The article discusses the issue of the place and presence of women in the public sphere, and tries to answer the question of how these matters are impacted by the institution of the Constitutional Tribunal. Applying the method of discourse analysis, I have examined the Polish Constitutional Tribunal’s decisions and looked into the media discussion, with both revealing dominant trends regarding women’s rights in Polish constitutionalism. Using the category of counterpublics, I also cover emancipation movements important on account of women’s rights and their presence in the public domain. I also address the common myths concerning the Constitutional Tribunal. There are also mentions of room for the materialisation of emancipation processes in Polish constitutionalism.

    This article examines the transformation of political discourse on women’s rights and women-oriented NGOs in Tanzania, focusing on successive state administrations within the same political party, led by John Pombe Magufuli and Jakaya Kikwete. The analysis unfolds through three key phases: first, characterizing the habitus of Tanzanian women’s NGOs; second, examining the evolving narratives in government-NGO relations; and third, briefly exploring the political discourse during the Kikwete and Magufuli presidencies. The research methodology is based on extensive desk research and two field studies conducted in Tanzania. Rather than adhering to a preconceived theory, our research approach is guided by theorems and selected frameworks. Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical concepts, particularly ‘habitus’ and the ‘exchangeability of different forms of capital,’ underpin our argument and interpretation of the data. The study shows that while elements of anti-feminism are evident in Magufuli’s political discourse, accusations of promoting toxic masculinity are mainly unfounded. At the same time, it argues that the critique of women’s empowerment and women-focused NGOs can be attributed to Magufuli’s unique mode of accumulating political and economic capital, leading to heightened distrust in the relationship between these NGOs and the Tanzanian government.

    The paper explores the didactic potential of the novels by the eighteenth-century English writer Frances Burney. To this end, it takes up the metaphor of a life-like automaton – a symbol of human ingenuity and artistic mastery, and a popular object of entertainment in the eighteenth century – and examines its applicability to describe the act of construing a novelistic text. The analysis yields the conclusion that Burney’s experiments with narrative techniques (third-person narration, free indirect discourse, heteroglossia) were employed to ensure the narrator’s authority through the strategic withdrawal of the authorial feminine voice, and were also instrumental in achieving a text which would be both aesthetically pleasing and instructive to the readers. Burney’s didacticism, moreover, proves to be very modern, that is not prescriptively moralizing, but rather training the readers in the exercise of empathy.

    This volume Society and Gender: Contemporary Issues and Research Perspectives, is a reflection of dynamically developing gender studies in the Polish social sciences. The first part of the introduction shows that gender/gender perspective has become one of the basic and essential cognitive category to understand the social world at its various levels, has also universal and widespread structural and stratification meaning. The second part of the introduction presents six articles that show all the richness and complexity of gender perspective in social research. The contributions are devoted to the issues connected with the media images of masculinity; the critical reflection on contemporary Polish television series, in particular the ways they tackle narratives that include instances of violence against women; the under-representation of media coverages of women’s sports; experiences of infertility and the social expectations towards women until they receive a diagnosis of infertility; medical views on transgender and their influence on self-perception among trans people; and the process of gendering memory as a counterpoint to the politicization of memory. The diversity of contents presented within individual texts illustrates how multi-faceted the considerations of gender issues are.
    Niniejszy tom Społeczeństwo i płeć – współczesne problemy i perspektywy badawcze jest odzwierciedleniem dynamicznie rozwijających się studiów genderowych w polskich naukach społecznych. Pierwsza część wprowadzenia pokazuje, że gender / perspektywa genderowa stała się jedną z podstawowych i niezbędnych kategorii poznawczych pozwalających zrozumieć świat społeczny na jego różnych poziomach, ma również uniwersalne i powszechne znaczenie strukturalne i stratyfikacyjne. Druga część wprowadzenia przedstawia sześć artykułów, które ukazują całe bogactwo i złożoność perspektywy genderowej w badaniach społecznych. Artykuły poświęcone są zagadnieniom związanym z: medialnymi obrazami męskości; krytyczną refleksją nad współczesnymi polskimi serialami telewizyjnymi, w szczególności nad narracjami, które obejmują przypadki przemocy wobec kobiet; niedostateczną medialną reprezentacją kobiet w sporcie; doświadczaniem niepłodności oraz społecznymi oczekiwaniami wobec kobiet niepłodnych; medycznymi poglądami na temat transseksualizmu i ich wpływami na postrzeganie siebie przez osoby transseksualne; historią kobiet i procesami upolitycznienia pamięci. Różnorodność prezentowanych treści ilustruje, jak wieloaspektowe są rozważania nad problematyką gender.
