Opis:
The Joint Research Project METEOMET - "Metrology for Meteorology" realized in the frame of the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) is described in the paper. The project is focused on the traceability of measurements involved in the climate changes: surface and upper air measurements of temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, solar irradiance and reciprocal influences between measurands. It includes development and testing of novel instruments as well as improved calibration procedures and facilities for ground based observations, including in-situ practical calibrations and best practice dissemination. The project consortium is based on 18 National Metrology Institutes (NMIs), three un-funded partners and several collaborators, such as universities, research centers, meteorological organization and institutions, from Europe and other non-European countries. Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRiM) in Italy is the project coordinator. Three Polish organizations participate in the project: the Central Office of Measure (MG-GUM), the Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research (INTiBS) and the Wrocław University (UWr).

Opis:
This paper compares the spatial distribution datasets on monthly precipitation totals derived from the Famine Early Warning System Network FEWS NET service (CHIRPS 2.0 product) and the International Mission of the Global Precipitation Measurement GPM (IMERG v06 product) with ground-based observations of a stationary weather stations located in the steppe region of the Crimean Peninsula in order to assess the representativeness of the precipitation spatial distribution and the applicability of the datasets for water balance calculations and agricultural crop dynamics modeling. A close convergence was observed between the estimated monthly precipitation totals and the precipitation gauge data during the study period (January 2017 - July 2020), with mean correlation coefficients of 0.75 and 0.73 for the GPM IMERG and CHIRPS, respectively. Both products generally overestimated the precipitation values compared to the measured data, with GPM IMERG (final run) exhibiting the greatest overestimations (1.3-2.1 times the weather station values). Our results demonstrate the requirement of GPM-derived precipitation estimations (particularly those from the GPM_3IMERDL v06 daily accumulated late run dataset) to be additionally verified and calibrated based on data from regional weather stations or the CHIRPS 2.0 product (if available).

Opis:
To determine the atmospheric concentrations and size distributions of particulate selenium (Se), aerosols were collected by air filtration and impactor sampling at the Kap Arkona coastal weather station on the Island of R¨ugen.T otal reflection X-ray fluorescence analysis was used to determine Se and numerous other elements as well. The dependence of the Se concentration on the wind direction and the results of a regression analysis indicated that Se associated with sub-micron particles is mainly derived from anthropogenic sources. The pronounced relationship between Se and Cu indicated that copper smelting is a major source of atmospheric selenium. A marine Se contribution was identified for particles larger than 2 μm.

Opis:
The installation of an energy-saving facility must be preceded by analysis of its financial effectiveness. Among methods enabling such evaluation is the basic net profit calculation method. For this, the annual consumption of electricity for ventilation or of thermal energy for heating must be determined. The calculation formula uses the sum of energies for temperatures within the range from the calculation temperature for the area in question to the long-term average of the maximum temperature at the site, or to the temperature at which the heating power is zero. It is necessary to know the summary time of occurrence of a given temperature during a year. The site data can only be assessed based on long-term meteorological information. In fact, data used by current national standards to describe climatic conditions in the Czech Republic are from the years 1901 to 1950. The dependence of the average yearly temperature on altitude is shown in Fig. 1 for the 1961 1990 and 1991 2000 periods. It is evident that the average temperatures for the latter period are nearly 0.6 K higher than those for the former period, irrespective of the altitude. In this paper the climatic conditions are assessed based on daily data measured throughout the period from 1 January 1991 to 31 December 2000. Weather stations were selected so as to achieve a uniform coverage and continuity of measurement at each site (as far as possible). All the stations lie in the Czech Republic between 48.8° and 50.8° north latitude at altitudes from 158 m to 1324 m. It was the objective of this examination, based on the meteorological data collected to calculate the average number of days and hours during which the temperature during the year is lower than a specific limiting level, in dependence on the average yearly temperature of the site. Fig. 3 shows the average number of days in a year during which a temperature lower than a selected limiting level occurs, as calculated for the 1991 2000 period. The results are presented for 4 areas with average yearly temperatures of 6 °C 7 °C, 7 °C 8 °C, 8 °C 9 °C, and 9 °C 10 °C, respectively. The graphs enables us to ascertain the number of days during which a heating facility is in operation if the facility is activated by outdoor air temperature decrease to below a specific limiting level. If a typical daily temperature wave is considered, the method makes it possible to estimate the number of hours during which the air temperature is lower than the limiting level chosen. The difference between the data for various limiting levels allows us, for an area with a specific average yearly temperature to ascertain the time of occurrence of outdoor temperature within various ranges. The results of calculations are shown in Fig. 4 and Table 1. The method applied enables underlying data to be prepared for the assessment of energy demands for air heating at a given site and for estimation of the energy savings that could be achieved by installing economical air heating facilities in livestock buildings.

Opis:
One of the elements interfering road safety are weather conditions. Supporting instrument for identification of threats are weather information systems. They are responsible for control and minimizing disadvantageous impact of atmospheric phenomenon’s on traffic. This research presents technologies used in road meteorology. Wide range of discussed systems include intrusive sensors that require mounting in road surface, as well as non-intrusive ones. One of the modern solutions are mobile sensors that allows to monitor current weather situation in variable locations. This idea seems to be an useful instrument supporting traffic management in urban areas. Mobile technology enables fast intervention of traffic authorities and eradicating dangerous effects on road network. The research elaborates on weather exemplary data collected by mobile sensor. Authors also established possible solution for monitoring and control atmospheric conditions using public transportation system in urban area.
