Opis:
The dependence of piezoelectric wave impedance on the rotation speed is investigated theoretically and numerically. The Coriolis force due to rotation is introduced into the piezoelectric motion equations, which is solved by the harmonic plane wave solution. It is shown that the wave impedance variations of longitudinal and transverse waves due to rotation are clearly different. The longitudinal wave impedance continuously increases with a small rotation ratio and one transverse wave impedance is almost irrespective of a rotation ratio. In contrast, the rotation applies a big impact on the other transversal wave impedances in the piezoelectric crystal which decreases monotonically with the rotation speed. Such characteristics are significant in piezoelectric transducers and sensors.

This article presents the results of seismic shear wave velocity (VS) measurements using the CSWS/SAWS (Continuous Surface Wave System/Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves) and SDMT (seismic flat dilatometer) methods, as well as BET (Bender Elements Test), on an experimental test site (and samples taken from it). The test site, a geologically relatively uniform alluvial sand formation area, was carefully chosen and checked for uniformity by means of drillings and soundings. The research aimed to determine how results from indirect, non-invasive surface geophysical tests (SASW and CSWS) correspond with those from SDMT penetration tests as well as the BET laboratory seismic method, and how some methodological aspects can influence them. Different wave sources and frequency were examined as the main factors for interpretation. The influence of other examined factors is also discussed.

This paper presents the results of modelling compressional and shear wave velocities and elastic moduli, as well as Poisson’s coefficient changes in sandstone-shale rocks, based on the distribution of media reservoir (water, gas) in the pore space. Modelling was performed using the Estymacja-TP computer program and theoretical Kuster–Toksöz and Biot–Gassmann relationships. Phase distribution of saturating pores (ellipsoidal shapes) in several ways was assumed. Calculations were made of elastic parameters in the deposits of the autochthonous Miocene Sarmatian in the borehole B-4. Using a method similar to the so-called “fluid substitution” velocity of compressional and shear waves, elastic moduli, Poisson’s ratio and bulk density, under various conditions of water and gas saturation, were calculated. The assumed change in water saturation ranged from Sw = 0% to 100%.

The aim of this paper is to describe a non-invasive method of examination of the local pulse wave velocity. The measurements were carried out in the model of the artery immersed in a water tank. Two synchronized ultrasonic apparatus VED with the ultrasonic radio frequency echoes acquisition system were used for evaluation of the arterial elasticity. The zero-crossing method was used for determination of the diameter changes of the artery model. The transit time between the waveforms of instant artery diameter was measured at two points of the artery model, separated by the distance of 5 cm. The transit time was determined using the criteria of similarity of the first derivatives of the raising slopes of the curves describing instant vessel’s diameter changes. The pulse wave velocity obtained by the proposed twopoint method was compared with the results obtained by the one-point method based on the modified Bramwell–Hill relation.

Opis:
Many of the pipe materials, like polyethylene (MDPE, HDPE) or polypro-pylene (PP), turn out to be visco-elastic. The materials in particular, prove to have strongly time-dependent strain properties. As the propa-gation velocity of pressure waves primarily depends on the fluid bulk modulus and the elasticity of the pipe wall, the above material property has considered the influence in unsteady pipe flow (e.g. in water ham-mer). The pressure velocity in visco-elastic pipes depends on the pres-sure oscillation frequency. The applicability of the method of MOC char-acteristics is limited in the sense that purely elastic strain behaviour has to be assumed. In order to take into account the special properties of visco-elastic pipes, the parameters of the Kelvin-Voigt elements, as well as a complex Young's modulus (dynamic modulus of elasticity) are used to described the pressure velocity. The use of the complex wave velocity seems to be especially useful. However, the velocity should be meas-ured during unsteady water flow. The experiments carried out show that pressure disturbance velocity in MDPE pipe strongly depends on the length of the pipe-line. The velocity increases noticeably when the length of the pipe decreases.

Opis:
In this paper a possibility of determining a local velocity of the surface acoustic Rayleigh waves using a transducer, with the rigidly connected emitting and receiving parts, is considered. A problem on spatial resolution of such a transducer for investigation of inhomogeneous specimens is also examined. A high spatial resolution can be obtained due to the transducer displacement by a value less than the distance between the emitting and receiving parts. It is shown that in this case it is not necessary to measure the transducer displacement with a high accuracy for precise determination of the velocity. Such an effect is obtained through measuring the velocity of surface waves in one local region of the specimen with respect to the other. The criterion for optimal spatial resolution selection during spatially inhomogeneous specimens study is also proposed. The proposed criterion use is illustrated on the example of the determination of spatial distribution of the surface acoustic velocity in a steel specimen subjected to inhomogeneous plastic deformation.

Limestone is an important industrial raw material. It is consumed by chemical and other industries (84%), used as refractory and road construction material (12%) and applied in civil engineering and agricultural applications (4%). Substantial amounts of limestone are also used as lime in the iron and steel industry. The aim of this study was to determine the properties of limestones. The chemical, physical and thermal properties of limestones were determined by standard methods while the P-wave velocities of limestones were measured with an ultrasonic non-destructive tester and relationships between limestone properties were estimated. It was found that there is a statistical correlation between physical properties and the P-wave velocity of limestones. The P-wave velocity is a very good characteristic parameter for the study and estimation of the limestone quality.

Opis:
The aim of this research is to use a simple acoustic method of a very near field recording, which enables measurement and display of oscillation modes, to estimate the velocity of flexural waves, based on the wavelengths of standing waves measured on the sample. The paper analyses cases of 1D geometry, flexural waves that occur on a beam excited by an impulse. Measurements were conducted on two different samples: steel and a wooden beam of the same length. Due to the appearance of evanescent waves at the boundary regions, the distance between the nodes of standing waves that occur deviates from half the wavelength, which can be compensated using a correction factor. Cases of fixed and free boundary conditions were analysed. By quantifying how much the boundary conditions change the mode shape function, it can be predicted how the mode of oscillation changes if the boundary conditions change, which can also find application in musical acoustics and sound radiation analysis.

Opis:
The knowledge of the dynamic elastic properties of a coal seam is important in the context of various types of calculations of the seam behavior under various stress-strain conditions. These properties are often used in numerical and analytical modeling related to maintaining the stability of excavations and the analysis of mechanisms, e.g. related to the risk of rock bursts. Additionally, during the implementation of seismic surveys, e.g. seismic profiling and seismic tomography in coal seams, the reference values of the elastic properties of coal are used in the calculation of relative stresses in various geological and mining conditions. The study aims to calculate the dynamic elastic parameters of the coal seam located at a depth of 1,260 m in one of the hard coal mines in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB). Basic measurements of the velocity of P- and S-waves were conducted using the seismic profiling method. These surveys are unique due to the lack of the velocity wave values in the coal seam at such a great depth in the USBC and difficult measurement conditions in a coal mine. As a result, dynamic modulus of elasticity was calculated, such as Young’s modulus, volumetric strain modulus, shear modulus and Poisson’s ratio. The volumetric density of coal used for calculations was determined on the basis of laboratory tests on samples taken in the area of the study. The research results showed that the calculated mean P-wave velocity of 2,356 m/s for the depth of 1,260 m is approximately consistent with the empirical relationship obtained by an earlier study. The P-wave velocity can be taken as the reference velocity at a depth of approx. 1,260 m in the calculation of the seismic anomaly in the seismic profiling method.
Dodatkowo w trakcie realizacji badań sejsmicznych np. profilowań sejsmicznych i tomografii sejsmicznej w pokładach węgla referencyjne wartości właściwości sprężyste węgla wykorzystywane są w obliczaniach naprężeń względnych w różnych warunkach geologiczno-górniczych.

The pyrotechnic materials are one of the types of the explosives materials which produce thermal, luminous or sound effects, gas, smoke and their combination as a result of a self-sustaining chemical reaction. Therefore, pyrotechnics can be used as a seismic source that is designed to release accumulated energy in a form of seismic wave recorded by tremor sensors (geophones) after its passage through the rock mass. The aim of this paper was to determine the utility of pyrotechnics for shallow seismic engineering. The work presented comparing the conventional method of seismic wave excitation for seismic refraction method like plate and hammer and activating of firecrackers on the surface. The energy released by various sources and frequency spectra was compared for the two types of sources. The obtained results did not determine which sources gave the better results but showed very interesting aspects of using pyrotechnics in seismic measurements for example the use of pyrotechnic materials in MASW.

Arterial stiffness measurements are primarily used for the early detection of arteriosclerosis. Methods and devices that can easily measure arterial stiffness at home are in demand. We propose a simple method for measuring brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) at home using a reclining chair and investigate the effects of positioning on baPWV measurement. We measured baPWV in 50 healthy men (21–70 years) in seven different measurement positions, including the supine position, sitting, sitting with the knees flexed at 45°, sitting with the knees flexed at 0°, reclining at 37°, reclining at 50°, and standing. BaPWV was significantly lower in the supine position (P < 0.01) than in the other positions. It was significantly higher in the sitting position (P < 0.01) than in the reclining position (37°). No changes in baPWV were seen changing the knee flexion angle alone while sitting. Strong correlations were also observed between baPWV in the supine position and that in other positions. We showed that baPWV in the supine position can be calculated by making corrections to baPWV measured in the sitting position at a reclining angle. Utilizing this corrected value would allow easy measurement at home using a reclining chair.
