Opis:
Dynamic development of aquaculture has led to an increasing impact on the status of surface waters. Fish production generates wastes that, at high concentrations, may present a serious risk to the aquatic environment. Studies on the assessment of the impact of water management technologies in trout production on the quality of surface waters were conducted in 2011. Six farms were selected for the studies and were divided into two groups based on water management solutions (n = 3): farms with a flow through system (FTS) and farms with a recirculation aquaculture system (RAS). On all farms, water measurement points were set and they depicted the quality of in-flow water, the quality of water in ponds and the quality of outflow water. The studies did not demonstrate any impact of applied technology on electrolyte conductivity or calcium and magnesium concentrations in outflow water from a trout operation. In addition, it was found that the use of water for production purposes resulted in a slight increase in phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations in waste waters.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of reclamation on selected soil water properties in soils developed from lignite fly ash, deposited as a dry landfill, twenty years after forest reclamation was initiated. Five soil profiles, classified as technogenic soils (Technosols) within the fly ash disposal site of the Adamów (central Poland) power plant, were selected for this study. Disturbed and undisturbed samples (V=100 cm3) were collected from depths of 5–15 cm and 30–60 in each soil profile. The following physical properties were determined: particle size distribution, particle density, bulk density, soil moisture, hygroscopic water content, and the soil-water potential. Readily available water (RAW; difference of water content at pF=2.0 and at pF=3.7) and total available water (TAW; difference of water content at pF=2.0 and at pF=4.2) were calculated based on soil moisture tension (pF) values. The following chemical properties were determined: soil reaction, total organic carbon, total nitrogen content, carbonate content. Statistical analyses were conducted using the GenStat 18 statistical software package. The soils under study were characterized by very low bulk density, high total porosity, high field water capacity and maximum hygroscopicity. The RAW/TAW ratio values indicate very effective water retention in the soils, thereby ensuring a satisfactory water supply to the plants. However, statistical analysis did not show any clear trends in variability of any determined properties. The small differences in observed outcomes probably resulted from the original variability of the fly ash deposited on the studied landfill. Obtained results show the strong similarity of fly ash derived soils and Andosols in respect of physical and soil-water properties.

Opis:
The ratio of the magnetic moment and charge of a proton when multiplied by the viscosity of water results in forces that when applied over the distance of O-H bonds provides quantum increments in the order of 10-20 J. Precise coefficients of this order of magnitude are consistent with the mechanisms associated with proton (H+) mobility and duration of the hydronium atom. When applied to aggregate properties of water that involve exclusion zones defined by boundaries containing marked proton density and coherent domains within which specific patterns of applied magnetic fields can be contained for protracted periods, these intrinsic properties suggest that the major features of the cell plasma membrane and living systems can be accommodated by proton movements within water. Water exposed in the dark to weak magnetic fields displayed a ~10 nm shift in peak wavelength as measured by a fluorescence spectrophotometer. Given the persistent emergence of 10-20 J as a functional unit of energy across the universe, the physical significance of the interaction between weak, temporally patterned magnetic fields and the organization of water within astronomical and abiogenic contexts may have been underestimated.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of soil and floristic research conducted in the valley of the central course of Warta River in the “Nature 2000” area, which is located nearby KWB Adamów brown coal pit. The state of grasslands’ vegetation was characterized on the basis of its floristic composition, and such soil properties as texture, specific density, bulk density, porosity, maximal hygroscopic capacity, saturated hydraulic conductivity, the potential of water bonding and total and readily available water were analyzed. Grasslands located in the detention basin were diverse and the diversion depended mostly on their location and utilization. Foxtail, oatgrass, and fescue-poa grasslands were dominant, whose new growth is rich in species of economically useful herbs and weeds. Examined soils showed great variation in their physical and water properties. It stems out from their specific origin which was strongly conditioned by the fact that are much more influenced by geological than soil-formation processes. These changes were caused mainly by different texture of each genetic level and the character of sludge accumulation which influences the content of total carbon. The presented results did not differ significantly from typical values found in alluvial soils of Polish river valleys. The conducted pedological characteristics of habitats suggests that the examined area is not undergoing degradation due to the activities of an opencast mine located nearby. It has also been confirmed by the high level of soil and ground waters.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań gleboznawczych i florystycznych przeprowadzonych w Dolinie Środkowej Warty na terenie obszaru „Natura 2000”, sąsiadującego z działającą odkrywką węgla brunatnego KWB Adamów.

Opis:
Misconceptions are widely present among the students of all ages. The aim of this investigation was to determine the presence of misconceptions in understanding physical properties of water and to identify the most common ones. Quantitative analysis of data from the diagnostic conceptual test was performed on a sample of 243 first and third grade students from three elementary schools in Sombor, Serbia. It was shown that the impact of gender and school affiliation were not proven to be statistically significant factors in test achievements, while the children’s age significantly affects test results, as expected. Synthetic and scientifically correct answers were more frequent among the third grade students, while spontaneous answers were more common among the first graders. Nevertheless, a significant proportion of spontaneous answers implies that misconceptions about physical properties of water are almost identical and deep-rooted among students of both ages. Identifying children’s misconceptions provides a basis for development of accurate conceptual understanding.

Opis:
Post-peat water bodies formed as a result of peat digging for fuel in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century are common in the middle part of Dobrzyńskie Lakeland. In many cases peat was dug almost completely to form small water bodies. In the studied part of the lakeland 56.24 ha or 10.20% of peatland area have been exploited. The share of peatlands in the surface area of particular regions varied from 3.79% to 9.81%. The degree of peat exploitation also varied. Peat coverage of 7.06% was larger than the mean for Poland (3.80%) but close to that in young glacial areas. A group of water bodies formed after peat digging differed in terms of water quality. Physical and chemical properties of waters in studied water bodies are typical of surface and shallow ground waters in young glacial areas. They are fresh waters of a slightly higher content of mineral ions and of neutral to alkaline pH. Their electrolytic conductivity ranged between 300 and 500 µS·cm–1. Bicarbonates and calcium dominated their ionic composition. Post-peat water bodies were colonised by pleustonic and rush plant communities. Their species composition indicates eutrophic habitat conditions. Despite the fact that post-peat water bodies were formed as a result of intense environmental disturbance, now they increase landscape diversity of the middle part of Dobrzyńskie Lakeland and are habitats of many rare and endangered plant species.
Mimo że powstały w wyniku znacznego przekształcenia środowiska, obecnie potorfia występujące w środkowej części Pojezierza Dobrzyńskiego zwiększają różnorodność krajobrazową i stanowią siedlisko wielu rzadkich i zagrożonych gatunków roślin.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to characterize and compare the water-binding and water -holding capacities of fibre preparations based on an evaluation of their adsorption properties. The scope of the work included the determination of the water content and activity in the tested material, the determination of adsorption isotherms at 20ºC, a mathematical description of sorption isotherms using the theoretical GAB sorption model as well as an estimation of the microstructural parameters of the tested fibre samples. The following commercial fibre preparations were examined: wheat – WF 200, WF 400, WF 600, potato – KF 200, apple – BJ, oats – BO and carrot – BM. The water content in the analysed fibre preparations covered the range from 6.604 g 100 g–1 for BO fibre to 10.81 g 100 g–1 for BM fibre while their water activity ranged between 0.495 for KF200 fibre and 0.564 for WF200 fibre. The fraction of free water present in carrot (BM) and potato (KF200) fibres was significantly more tightly bound to the product matrix than the fraction of free water in oats fibre (BO). Based on the studies conducted it was established that both the genetic variety and the technological process of micronization had an impact on the water-binding and holding capacities. This was proven on the basis of the evaluation of the adsorption properties and the differences in the surface microstructure of the preparations under examination. Not only the components present in the complex fraction of fibres, but also their physical state are of the utmost importance.

Tillage is one of the most important practices that have a significant influence on the soil hydro-physical properties. In this study, the impact of the type and number of input variables with five different methods of the Retc model to predicting the moisture retention curve and soil water content in three surfaces tillage NT (No-tillage), CP (Chisel Plough) and MP (Moldboard Plough) and the impact of tillage systems on soil hydro-physical properties were evaluated. According to results, when the field capacity and wilting point moisture was added to input data in Retc to predict the moisture curve model parameters, the EF was increased in MP (0.977, 0.95) and CP (0.891, 0.86) treatments compare the NT (0.665, 0.608). The Mualem–Van Genuchten model can describe satisfactorily the simulation of soil physical properties. The S-index, which was also affected by tillage, was greater than 0.066 in all tillage treatments, indicating good soil physical quality. Results indicated that NT had the highest and lowest values of bulk density (1.55 Mgr.m⁻³) and total available water (TAW) (0.038 m.m⁻¹), respectively, and the differences between NT and MP in total porosity was significant. Overall, in most soil layers, tillage practices affected the porosity and total available water in the order MP > CP > NT. Water retention curves indicated that the water retention capacity was greater in tilled than in no-tilled and saturated hydraulic conductivity values were greater in tilled treatments than in NT soil.

Present study describes about the effect of coolant water flow rate and coolant water temperature underside cooling slope on structural characteristics of casted AZ91 Mg alloy. Here, over the cooling slope, hot melt flows from top to bottom. Additionally, under the cooling slope, coolant water flows from bottom to top. Slurry gets obtained at bottom of cooling slope by pouring AZ91 Mg melt from top of the slope. Coolant water flow rate with coolant water temperature underside cooling slope warrant necessary solidification and shear to obtain AZ91 Mg slurry. Specifically, slurry at 5 different coolant water flow rates (4, 6, 8, 10, 12 lpm) and at 5 different coolant water temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 35°C) underside cooling slope are delivered inside metal mould. Modest coolant water flow rate of 8 lpm with coolant water temperature of 25°C (underside cooling slope) results fairly modest solidification that would enormously contribute towards enhanced structural characteristics. As, quite smaller/bigger coolant water flow rate/temperature underside cooling slope would reason shearing that causes inferior structural characteristics. Ultimately, favoured microstructure was realized at 8 lpm coolant water flow rate and 25°C coolant water temperature underside cooling slope with grain size, shape factor, primary α-phase fraction and grain density of 63 µm, 0.71, 0.68 and 198, respectively. Correspondingly, superior mechanical properties was realized at 8 lpm coolant water flow rate and 25°C coolant water temperature underside cooling slope with tensile strength, elongation, yield strength and hardness of 250 MPa, 8%, 192 MPa and 80 HV, respectively.

Thermo-physiological properties are very much connected to water vapour and air permeability. There are multiple standards with different working principles to determine the exact performance of any textile material. The research article covers the testing of 8 unique shirt samples on these devices compared that on a novel device created by the author to see how much the results differ from each other. Lastly, a theoretical approach was used to determine any correlation between air permeability and water vapour permeability. The research work helps in understanding the working of different devices used for water vapour permeability and allows a reduction in time by using a predictive approach with just the results from the air permeability machine.

Opis:
One of the most important technological processes of water treatment is the process of filtration. Scientists and producers keep on searching new filtration materials which allow for better water purification, are simple in exploitation and do not add chemical substances to the treated water. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to analyze physical and chemical parameters of two unknown porous masses X1 and X2. Such physical parameters as color, granulation, bulk density, the equivalent diameter, the coefficient of uniformity and the porosity of the material were measured and determined. Additionally, the possibility of water treatment was studied during the filtration process in the laboratory tests. Chemical parameters were examined in the water flowing through the mass, such as pH, conductivity and COD-Mn as a general indicator of the content of organic substances in the water. Both studied porous masses were characterized by uniform size of particles. But they were not efficient enough in satisfactory reduction of oxygen consumption. Mass X2 slightly better adsorbed organic substances. It was found that the tested unknown mass filter slightly increase the pH of the filtered water.
