Opis:
In this paper we report a study on influence of radio-frequency (RF) plasma induced with electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) on multiblock copolymer containing butylene terephthalate hard segments (PBT) and butylene dilinoleate (BDLA) soft segments. The changes in thermal properties were studied by DSC. The changes in wettability of PBT-BDLA surfaces were studied by water contact angle (WCA). We found that ECR-RF plasma surface treatment for 60 s led to decrease of WCA, while prolonged exposure of plasma led to increase of WCA after N2 and N2O2 treatment up to 70°–80°. The O2 reduced the WCA to 50°–56°. IR measurements confirmed that the N2O2 plasma led to formation of polar groups. SEM investigations showed that plasma treatment led to minor surfaces changes. Collectively, plasma treatment, especially O2, induced surface hydrophilicity what could be beneficial for increased cell adhesion in future biomedical applications of these materials.

Opis:
Selected physical and mechanical properties of high-density wet formed fibreboards produced with different cement content. The aim of this work was to produce, in laboratory conditions, high-density wet formed fibreboards with a different cement binder content: 0%; 0.5%; 1%; 2%; 5%; 10%. The panels were tested for their physical and mechanical properties in order to determine the effect of added cement on the properties of the boards. The results show that the mechanical parameters of the tested panels grow compare to the reference panel when the mass share of cement is 0.5%, and decreases with the cement share increase to 10%. The remaining physical parameters of the tested panels get worse with the cement content increase.
Wybrane właściwości fizyczne i mechaniczne płyt pilśniowych mokroformowanych wysokiej gęstości wytworzonych z różnym udziałem cementu.

Opis:
The research presented in the paper concerns the production of innovative hydrophobizing agents and demonstration their effectiveness on a concrete surface. The starting materials are based on natural oils, water‒soluble silanes and siloxanes, and/or tap water. Aqueous preparations are characterized by properties which reduce the impact of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on the environment, as they consist only of biodegradable components. Studies have shown that the higher fatty acids from vegetable oils and derived from the glycerin phase can be used as a component of concrete hydrophobizing agents, meeting the standard requirements for such agents. Analysis of the use of vegetable oil as a base compound for the production of industrial agents provides at least 95% confidence in its biodegradability. The reference concrete after the frost resistance test showed a weight loss of 1.8%. In the case of hydrophobization, the weight loss was 33.3 to 72% less than the reference samples. In the case of concrete hydrophobized with the glycerin agents, the salt crystallization occurred inside the structure of the material without causing any damage, with the reference concrete showing a weight loss of 0.8%.

Opis:
The wetting properties of solid mineral samples (by contact angles) in original surfactant-containing sea water (Gulf of Gdańsk,Ba ltic) were characterised under laboratory conditions on a large set (31 samples) of well-classified stones of diverse hydrophobicity using the sessile drop (ADSA-P approach),ca ptive bubble and inclined plate methods. An experimental relation between the static contact angle θeq and stone density ρ was obtained in the form θeq = Bρ + C,wher e B = 12.23 ± 0.92, C = −(19.17 ± 0.77),an d r2 = 0.92. The histogram of θeq distribution for polished stone plates exhibited a multimodal feature indicating that the most abundant solid materials (hydrophilic in nature) have contact angles θeq = 7.2,10. 7,15. 7 and 19.2◦,whic h appear to be applicable to unspecified field stones as well. The contact angle,a pH-dependent quantity,ap pears to be a sensitive measure of stone grain size,e.g . granite. The captive bubble method gives reproducible results in studies of porous and highly hydrophilic surfaces such as stones and wood. The authors consider the adsorption of natural sea water surfactants on stone surfaces to be the process responsible for contact angle hysteresis. In the model,an equation was derived for determining the solid surface free energy from the liquid’s surface tension γLV; it also enabled the advancing θA and receding θR contact angles of this liquid to be calculated. Measurements of contact angle hysteresis Δθ(= θA − θR) with surfactant-containing sea water and distilled water (reference) on the same stone surfaces allowed the film pressure ΔΠ (1.22 to 8.80 mJ m−2), solid surface free energy ΔγS (−17.03 to −23.61 mJ m−2) and work done by spreading ΔWS (−1.23 to −11.52 mJ m−2) to be determined. The variability in these parameters is attributed to autophobing,an effect operative on a solid surface covered with an adsorptive layer of surfactants. The wetting behaviour of solid particles is of great importance in numerous technological processes including froth flotation,d emulgation,an ti-foaming procedures and the coal industries. It is believed that the approach presented here and the examples of its application to common sea water/solid mineral systems could be successfully adapted to optimise several surfactant-mediated adsorption processes (see below) of practical value in natural water ecology.
