Opis:
The construction of the technological treatment plant is closely related to the amount and physicochemical parameters of incoming sewage. The economic aspects and the principles of sustainable development also should be taken into account at the stage of sewage treatment plant construction planning. Moreover, in large cities, there is often greater number of sewage treatment plants, which should create an effective system for wastewater treatment. Municipal wastewater treatment system should not disturb the ecological balance of the area and cannot contribute to the deterioration of the living conditions of people (especially those living in the immediate vicinity of the sewage treatment plant). The paper compares the process lines of three wastewater treatment plants located in the city of Bytom: “Centralna” plant, “Miechowice” plant and “Bobrek” plant. The paper also compares the main indicators of the efficiency of the described wastewater treatment plants and the selected parameters of the sewage sludge. Based on the above data, an attempt was made to assess the proper operation of the sewage treatment system in the city of Bytom.

wastewater reuse
Opis:
Once freshwater has been used for an economic or beneficial purpose, it is generally discarded as waste. In many countries, these wastewaters are discharged, either as untreated waste or as treated effluent, into natural watercourses, from which they are abstracted for further use after undergoing "self-purification" within the stream. Through this system of indirect reuse, wastewater may be reused up to a dozen times or more before being discharged to the sea. Such indirect reuse is common in the larger river systems of Latin America. However, more direct reuse is also possible: the technology to reclaim wastewaters as potable or process waters is a technically feasible option for agricultural and some industrial purposes (such as for cooling water or sanitary flushing), and is a largely experimental option for the supply of domestic water. Wastewater reuse for drinking raises public health, and possibly religious, concerns among consumers. The adoption of wastewater treatment and subsequent reuse as a means of supplying freshwater is also determined by economic factors. Human excreta and wastewater contains useful materials. These are water, organic carbon and nutrients and should be regarded as a resource. In their natural cycles, they are broken down by micro-organisms and become accessible to plants and animals, thus sustaining natural ecosystems. When improperly disposed, these substances can cause pollution. This is because the organic materials exert oxygen demand, and the nutrients promote algal growth in lakes, rivers and near-shore marine environments. Human excreta and wastewater also contain pathogens. Reuse of the wastes must ensure that public health is maintained. Planned reuse is the key to wastewater reuse. Planning for reuse ensures that public health and protection of the environment are taken into account. Reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation of crops, for example, will need to meet (i) standards for indicator pathogens, and (ii) plant requirement for water, nitrogen and phosphorus. WHO and others have developed standards for reuse of wastewater for various purposes. Further details of these standards can be found in the Regional Overviews in the Source Book, published by IWA and IETC. It must be pointed out, however, that requirements for water and nutrients are plant-specific and site-specific (dependent on soil type and climate), and information on these requirements need to be obtained from local information sources.

Opis:
The paper presents information related to the use of hydrophytic technology combined with traditional activated sludge solution for wastewater treatment in areas without central sewage system. The analyzed wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was operated in activated sludge technology with a hybrid activated sludge reactor where biomass is kept in a settled and suspended form. Treatment system was completed with a hydroponic lagoon. Hydroponic lagoon has been used as tertiary treatment, in which the self-cleaning processes with the participation of the plant has come to an additional reduction of nutrients. The analyzed three-stage treatment plant is located in the municipality of Nowa Sól. Only domestic wastewater delivered by slurry tanks is treated there in the amount of 60 m3/d. During the observation, high average concentrations of total nitrogen (201.0 mgN/dm3) was observed and organic matter expressed by COD reaching 1341.5 mgO2/dm3 and BOD5 on the level of 246.3 mgO2/dm3 were noted. A characteristic feature of the object designed for wastewater treatment delivered by slurry tanks is high irregularity of wastewater supply and high instantaneous loads of pollutants (the system does not provide expansion tank). The biggest inequality factor of the flow to the reactor was observed in December 2014 (Nd=3.9). During the observations days with no inflow of sewage also occurred. The study shows the dynamics of changes in the amount of delivered domestic wastewater and sewage flowing out of the treatment plant including inequality factor. Information about the quality of wastewater was used to determine the reduction of concentrations of pollutants such as organic matter, suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus.

Opis:
The article presents an application of multi-criteria analysis for selection of the best treatment technology and the best technical solution to the running of a large and a small wastewater treatment plant. The calculations performed for two plant capacities and for various effluent standards are based on a compromise programming method. The effluent standards considered for the smaller plant are only BOD5, COD and TSS, while for the larger plant also nitrogen and phosphorus. For each plant’s capacity, three different treatment technologies are analyzed. The analyzed technologies included biofilters, continuous and cyclic activated sludge, rotating biological contactors and natural treatment methods. The selection of the best technology is done with a define set of sustainability criteria that can be easily modified and adjusted to specific local conditions. The proposed method can be used for selection of the best treatment technology and the most appropriate technical solution from a sustainability standpoint, at the stage of wastewater system planning and designing, as well as for evaluation of already operating plants.

The possibility to combine wastewater treatment and electricity production can accomplish a microbial fuel cell. Microbial fuel cells use glucose from wastewater as a fuel. In recent years, both production of municipal and industry wastewater increases very much. Municipal wastewater is directed to the wastewater treatment plant. While industry wastewater can be use as a fertilizer. But, both municipal and industry wastewater can be used in the microbial fuel cells. The comparison of powering the microbial fuel cell with municipal and process wastewater from yeast production is presented in this paper. The measurements covered comparison of changes in the concentration of COD in the reactor without aeration, with aeration and with using a microbial fuel cell (powered with municipal and industry wastewater). The results of measurements of COD showed no differences between the microbial fuel cell powered with municipal wastewater and the microbial fuel cell powered with process yeast wastewater. But, the power output is higher with using process yeast wastewater to powering the microbial fuel cell.

Opis:
The effectiveness of recovered washing compositions containing single-phase detergents from cleaning-in-place (CIP) systems as solutions for the regeneration of membrane modules fouled during the filtration of wastewater from the prerinsing of the production line (white water) was assessed. The influence of process parameters (regeneration time, transmembrane pressure, cross-flow velocity, and solution temperature) on relative flux recovery was evaluated. A significantly higher regeneration efficiency of the ceramic and polymeric modules was obtained for the alkaline detergent compared to that of the acid formula. The key process parameters for the regeneration cycle were the contact time of the module with the cleaning detergent and its temperature. The influence of transmembrane pressure and cross-flow velocity on module permeability was negligible. Filtration experiments with white water confirmed that the membrane separation process is suitable for the recovery of milk compounds from dairy effluents.

Pollutant removal by the mechanism of constructed wetland has led to low cost, highly efficient wastewater treatment technology. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are artificial engineered systems that mimic like natural wetlands. CW’s have been used in previous research to treat a broad range of waste streams at large-scale for low-cost application in wastewater management. Generally, the most literature has targeted a particular class of mechanism or the other due to lack of generalized techniques for wastewater management using CWs. This work focuses on to introductory information and review on concept of CWs based on the latest mechanisms for the wastewater treatment to inspire economical and sustainable solutions to water based environmental problems. This research emphasis CW mechanism, construction, design, and applications of CWs as well as optimization of CWs for the treatment of wastewater. This review also highlights the study with different treatment stages of CWs for removing pollutants from different types of wastewaters.

The increasing of standard living causes the increases energy consumption and waste or wastewater production. The possibility to combine wastewater treatment and electricity production can accomplish a microbial fuel cell. The possibility of wastewater treatment using the Cu-B catalyst with KMnO4 catholyte for microbial fuel cells is presented in this paper. The measurements covered comparison of changes in the concentration of COD, NH4+ and NO3 - in the reactor without aeration, with aeration and with using a microbial fuel cell (with Cu-B cathode and KMnO4 catholyte). The reduction time for COD with the use of microbial fuel cell with the Cu-B catalyst (and KMnO4 catholyte) is similar to the reduction time with aeration. It has been shown that the Cu-B (with KMnO4 catholyte) can be used as cathode catalyst in microbial fuel cells. Unfortunately in this case is needed to constant delivery of catholyte.

Opis:
Upgrading concepts for the Bioblok MU200a wastewater treatment plant have been presented. The main goals were to achieve an effective nitrogen removal and reduce energy demand. The reference version has been presented, followed by two retrofitting options: introduction of intermittent aeration for alternating aerobic and anoxic conditions, additionally including a retrofitting option to a hybrid technology that combines advantages of activated sludge and biofilm. To design and assess both variants, the ASM3 model was used, running on the Simba# simulator. A rather complex biofilm model, necessary for the hybrid concept, was bypassed by installing a separate activated sludge process differing in terms of sludge age and disposal of its excess sludge to the reactor. In this way, favorable technological parameters for efficient wastewater treatment could be assessed. Both upgrading concepts can be recommended for their satisfactory treatment effectiveness, feasibility in existing plants and considerable energy savings. The significance of the modelled effects was statistically confirmed two-tailed Student’s t-test.
