Opis:
Visual information is thought to be a dominant information source when performing whole-body movements in gymnastics. Visual information can furthermore facilitate performance when being engaged in situations of interpersonal coordination that may occur in sports such as synchronized trampolining. The question arises, which body-related visual cues are most important in the emergence of behavioral synchronization between two gymnasts in synchronized trampolining? To address this question, advanced gymnasts were asked to synchronize their performance to video-sequences of a model gymnast, while body-related visual cues of the model gymnast were systematically manipulated. Results revealed, first that biological motion cues are more important than nonbiological motion cues, and second that the perceived motion of the arms seems to drive synchronicity in synchronized trampolining. It is stated, that biological visual information of the arms is a dominant visual information source when performing leaps in synchronized trampolining.

Visual and concrete poetry reduced ad absurdum current communication conventions and refused to take for granted what is only seemingly obvious. Visual poetry “forces us to look at the text before we read it, that is, to acknowledge its physical authority.” [Willard Bohn, 1986] In the previous century, as well as in the present one, the visual, or if you will, the “scopic régime,” brought about a change of attitude to a written word. Poetry and visual arts accentuated the materiality of writing.

As the world moves towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution, there is a need for formulations of neurophysiological biomarkers that ensure the accuracy of the diagnosis of visual perception dysfunction in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Biomarkers of visual perception dysfunction in ASD using EEG complements behavioral methods of diagnosis and allows for a more direct assessment of the dysfunction, identifying rapid, implicit neural processes that are not revealed through behavioral measures alone. This paper aims to review the neural biomarkers of the five domains of visual perception dysfunction (visual discrimination (VD), visual spatial relations (VSR), visual form constancy (VFC), visual memory (VM) and visual closure (VC)) in individuals with ASD. This paper shall help researchers gain new insight into the current trends and progress in EEG methods in ASD and discover gaps in the subject literature. A systematic literature search on PubMed was conducted to report findings of EEG studies that:1) assessed the severity levels in patients with ASD and 2) investigated the neural biomarkers of visual perception dysfunction in ASD. Spectral analysis, functional connectivity analysis and event-related potential (ERP) are useful in modern medicine to identify the biomarkers that distinguish the levels of the severity of visual perception dysfunction in ASD.

Opis:
Eye, head, and body movements are thought to be functionally coupled in the performance of complex skills, such as somersaults with and without twists (Davlin et al. 2001; von Laßberg et al. 2014). Directing the gaze to specific locations in the environment during the takeoff phase in somersaults could influence takeoff kinematics and, as a consequence, the subsequent flight phase. The goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between gaze direction during takeoff and the corresponding movement kinematics when performing backward somersaults in cheerleading. N = 11 cheerleaders performed standing backward somersaults in three experimental conditions (straight gaze direction, elevated gaze direction, depressed gaze direction). Results revealed that cheerleaders exhibited a larger hip angle during takeoff and longer flight duration of the somersaults when their gaze was elevated during the takeoff phase, thereby supporting the notion that a functional coupling seems to operate between gaze behaviour and motor behaviour in cheerleading. In daily practice, cheerleaders could try to focus their gaze on a point on the wall in front of them during the takeoff phase in somersaults in order to facilitate the development of a functional coupling between gaze behavior and motor behavior.

The growing interest in using graphs in education created the need for research-based guidelines. This study examined the effects of graph type, conceptual domain and perceptual organization of information on graph comprehension. Forty-two undergraduate students were given eight different kinds of graphs, and their descriptions were analyzed. The results indicated that graphical reasoning was influenced by perceptual grouping of information in visual chunks rather than by type of graph. Learners faced difficulties when an unconventional graph format was used. Implications for research and practice were also discussed.

There is a significant complexity of movements and an ability to adapt to changing situations during a match, hence, a factor which decides about sports rank of a player is their motor fitness. The assessment of muscle power output and abilities of coordination in high-rank players can be one of the most essential model indicators either in the process of athlete selection or in the process of sports training. The research question is: How the measured indicators of a somatic body construction and motor fitness condition the sports level of volleyball players who specialize in different tactical functions? The paper demonstrates the test results of 12 volleyball players from MKS Muszynianka – a vice-champion of Poland in 2009. Basic features of a somatic body construction were measured; the indicators of muscle dynamic strength, visual perception and visual-motor coordination were tested. The comparative analysis of the applied somatic and fitness indicators in the study explains both the model of choice of tactical specializations in the game and sports hierarchy of volleyball players at championship level. Lengthwise predispositions of a body construction are prominent in the model; however, fitness skills (muscle dynamic strength and visual-motor coordination) may well compensate for insufficient somatic indicators.

Opis:
The analyses presented in the article aim to investigate the specific nature of visual problems in a young child whose visual disability results from a brain tumor. The article presents a case study on difficulties in using vision and visual perception development in an almost 4-year-old boy with a brain tumor. It refers to knowledge concerning visual problems in children with brain tumors that is available in source materials and presents a detailed description of difficulties in visual reception and perception in a boy whose visual problems result from cancer. This description was made based on the results of a functional vision assessment. Decreased visual acuity, reduced visual fields, abnormalities in the development of oculomotor functions, lack of spatial vision, and difficulties in visual perception were found in the boy. Both the analysis of medical literature presented in the paper and the results of the boy's functional vision assessment suggest possible development of visual functioning disorders secondary to a brain tumor, such as decreased visual acuity and reduced visual fields, which determine visual abilities and have an adverse impact on the development of visual perception in early life. Based on the analysis of an individual situation, the description of difficulties in visual functioning suggests there is a risk of similar impairments in children with brain tumors.
Celem analiz podjętych w artykule jest poznanie specyfiki zaburzeń widzenia u małego dziecka, u którego niepełnosprawność wzroku jest konsekwencją nowotworu mózgu. W artykule zaprezentowano studium przypadku dotyczące trudności w zakresie posługiwania się wzrokiem i rozwoju percepcji wzrokowej u niespełna czteroletniego chłopca z nowotworem mózgu. U badanego dziecka stwierdzono obniżoną ostrość wzroku, ubytki w polu widzenia, nieprawidłowości w zakresie rozwoju funkcji motorycznych oczu, brak widzenia przestrzennego oraz trudności w zakresie percepcji wzrokowej.

The basketball jump shot as a movement, allowing visual feedback based corrections, can be considered as a generalized or a specialized motor skill. The purpose of this study is to look into the connection between visual perception and the specialization of a motor skill. Therefore, six male basketball players were asked to perform jump shots under different viewing conditions from their favourite spot (sweet spot) and a second, middle-distance spot. The question was, if performance is affected by the changed visual conditions and whether the shooting spot plays a role in a potentially change in performance. The different visual conditions were first, a regular basketball hoop with no adjustment, second a regular basketball hoop with a covered backboard, and third a regular basketball hoop with a covered rim. Between the different visual conditions, performance did not differ significantly, neither from the sweet spot, nor from the neutral defined spot. However, players showed a significantly better performance from sweet spot than from the neutral spot under regular viewing conditions.

This study aims to illustrate how visual and auditory perception are conceptualized in Swedish and what differences there are between them. Previous studies often discuss perception in relation to the oppositely directed motions between the perceiver and the object perceived. In the Perceiver-as-Source type, perception occurs when our eyes/gaze reach the object perceived. In the Perceived-as-Source type, perception takes place when sense stimuli reach the perceiver. The data show two differences between visual and auditory perception. First, we find more metaphorical expressions for visual perception than for auditory perception. Second, we also find that, while visual perception has a stronger connection to the Perceiver-as-Source type, auditory perception is more strongly connected to the Perceived-as-Source type. These two differences are explained by the function of the perceptual organs.

Opis:
The present study has been conducted to investigate the visuospatial constructive cognition and memory among healthy students, as measured by the Rey Complex Figure Test (RCFT). We have compared the data used to draw the figures with the hypothesis that gender and physiological measurements have an impact on neuropsychological skills. One hundred twenty-five students (43 male, 82 female; age 18–32 years) participated in this study with a computerized numerical recording of the digital plot of the RCFT and a set of socio-demographic variables. Results revealed that visual perception and working memory were impacted by social and health determinants. Additionally, this study presents evidence supporting the implication of resting heart rate (RHR) and organizational strategy in working memory performance. Gender effect seems to be significant in physical and physiological differences. Regression analyses revealed a relevant contribution of study institution and sleep time on RCFT Copy score; RCFT Memory predicted by drawing from memory strategy, RHR, periodic medication use and marital status.

This paper gives a concise overview of the techniques we have used to find out the degree of measuring the quality of rendered images and a level of noise in particular. First part of the paper presents designed and conducted psychophysical experiment involving human subjective judgment. Then, two of the existing numerical image comparison methods are considered in the context of assessing the level of noise produced by global illuminations algorithms. The results of the participants’ subjective responses are correlated with the data obtained from objective mathematical metrics. The main goal of research was to determine the objective and perceptual measure of quality for images with fixed sampling strategy. The results will help to establish the measures of identifying the human perception in the assessment of images generated with global illumination algorithms.

Several recent studies designate that individuals with type-1-diabetes (T1D) are at higher risk for cognitive impairment than their peers without T1D. The aim of this study was to determine whether socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, eating attitude and psycho-emotional characteristics can predict visual perception (VP) and working memory (WM) impairment in the Moroccan population with T1D. A cross-sectional analysis was carried out in adult T1D patients (N=140). The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure test (electronical version) was used to evaluate the VP and WM. Moreover, patients also completed the 21-item Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale to assess their mental health state. In order to evaluate the risk of eating disorders the Eating attitudes Test-26 were used. Finally, anthropometric properties and clinical characteristics were evaluated. Predictors of cognitive dysfunction were determined using the hierarchical regression analysis. The major result was that age, long diabetes duration, glycemia, HbA1c, dieting and bulimia were the potential predictors of low scores in VP and WM. Other significant predictors were cholesterol, triglycerides for visual perception. Although psych-emotional symptoms including stress, anxiety, and depression were not a significant predictors of VP and WM impairment. Furthermore, our findings showed that the more the level of stress increases, the VP and WM scores significantly decrease. This study suggests that it can be helpful for medical practitioners to screen for disordered eating behaviors and emotional symptoms as a supplemental risk factor for cognitive impairment in T1D.

Walkability entails measuring the degree of walking activity, a non-motorized mode of active transportation crucial in fast-developing urban settings and combating sedentary lifestyles. While there has been extensive objective research focusing on factors related to the physical environment that influence walkability, there has been a comparatively limited exploration into objectively evaluating a pedestrian’s visual perception. This study in Khulna, Bangladesh, aimed to develop a novel method for objectively measuring walkability based on pedestrian-level visual perception using machine learning. In this research, ResNet, a computer vision model, analyzed 127 panoramic Google Street View images taken at 200-meter intervals from seven major roads. The model, trained with the “deeplabv3plusResnet18CamVid” algorithm, quantified five selected visual features. The results, including walkability rankings, correlation analysis, and spatial mapping, highlighted that greenery and visual enclosures significantly influenced the walkability index. However, the impact of other visual features was less distinctive due to an overall poor streetscape condition. This study bridged the gap between human perception and scientific intelligence, allowing for the evaluation of previously “unmeasurable” streetscape designs. It provides valuable insights for more human-centered planning and transportation strategies, addressing the challenges of modern urbanization and sedentary behavior.
