Opis:
The isolated teeth of a new euselachian shark Artiodus prominens Ivanov and Duffin gen. et sp. nov. have been found in the Artinskian Stage (Early Permian) of Krasnoufimskie Klyuchiki quarry (Sverdlovsk Region, Middle Urals, Russia). The teeth of Artiodus possess a multicuspid orthodont crown with from four to nine triangular cusps; prominent labial projection terminating in a large round tubercle; distinct ornamentation from straight or recurved cristae; oval or semilunar, elongate, considerably vascularized base; dense vascular network formed of transverse horizontal, ascending, short secondary and semicircular canals. The teeth of the new taxon otherwise most closely resemble the teeth of some protacrodontid and sphenacanthid euselachians possessing a protacrodont-type crown, but differ from the teeth of all other known euselachians in the unique structure of the labial projection. The studied teeth vary in crown and base morphology, and three tooth morphotypes can be distinguished in the collection reflecting a moderate degree of linear gradient monognathic heterodonty. The range of morphologies otherwise displayed by the collection of teeth shows the greatest similarity to that described for the dentitions of relatively high-crowned hybodontids from the Mesozoic. The internal structure of the teeth, including their vascularization system is reconstructed using microtomography. The highest chondrichthyan taxonomic diversity is found in the Artinskian, especially from the localities of the Middle and South Urals.

Opis:
Detailed biostratigraphic correlation of late Frasnian and Famennian sections in the Southern Urals shows that the key global scale events near the boundary of Frasnian and Famennian are clearly expressed in combination with important regional scale tectonic events. The maximum regression occured during triangularis zones time, being recorded as common hiatuses. The beginning of specific ultra- potassic mantle volcanism took place during the linguiformis Zone. Processes of olistostrome deposition, uplift of the Uraltau zone, the start of flysch deposition, and exhumation of the high pressure-low temperature Maksiutovo metamorphic complex also took place very close to the Frasnian-Famennian boundary, as the general regression coincided with active local tectonic movements as the Magnitogorsk island arc collised with the East European continent. The global scale events at the F-F boundary are connected with activity of the Late Devonian superplume, which encompassed a vast area of the Kazakhstanian, East European, Siberian, Gondwana and South Chinese plates.

Opis:
On the western slope of the Southern Urals, a continuous conodont zone sequence within different facies of the Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) boundary beds is documented. In all the sections the boundary between both stages runs within lithologically uniform successions and can be determined only by a sharp faunal change. In brachiopod facies, it is placed within brachiopod shell beds and relates to the base of the Barma Beds, i.e., the level marked by a simultaneous appearance of the index brachiopod species Pugnoides(?) markovskii and the zonal conodont species Palmatolepis triangularis. In goniatite facies, the F-F boundary can be traced by the disappearance of diverse Frasnian conodonts and goniatites of the genus Manticoceras, coupled with the first occurrence of the conodont Pa. triangularis; the sequence shows also the well-known icriodid blooms in the earliest Famennian. Finds of Famennian goniatites (representatives of the genus Cheiloceras) are confined to the crepida zones. In the sections of theWest-Zilair, where the F-F boundary passage consists of siliceous- terrigenous deposits, the boundary can be established only by a change in conodont assemblages. In all the sections under investigation the F-F boundary level shows a drastic faunal change that corresponds to the global Kellwasser Event.

Opis:
Devonian deep-water deposits of the Southern Urals are represented mainly by flysch and cherty units. The main sedimentary basins (marginal sea and back-arc basin) and their origin, evolution and principal depositional environments are characterised. The main sources of clastic material were the Uraltau microcontinent (especially in the Famennian, when a mountain range formed following collision with an island arc) and two island arcs: the Irendyk, at the end of the Early and at the beginning of the Mid Devonian; and the Magnitogorsk, in the Mid to Late Devonian. Comparison with transgressive-regressive cycles established in Devonian epicontinental basins worldwide indicates that these global sea level fluctuations were recorded also in the Southern Urals deep-water settings. This applies primarily to the Eifelian and Frasnian-Famennian transgressive-regressive cycles.

Opis:
Early Carboniferous (late Tournaisian) conodonts, recovered from siliceous shales and silicites of the Nyan-Vorga Formation within the Lemva tectonic belt of the Polar Urals (Russia), include the biostratigraphically important taxa Siphonodella lanei, Gnathodus typicus, Dollymae hassi, and Scaliognathus anchoralis, marking the following conodont zones of the upper Tournaisian: crenulata, typicus, and anchoralis. Associated species include representatives of genera Siphonodella, Polygnathus, Pseudopolygnathus, Dollymae, Gnathodus, Kladognathus, and Idioprioniodus. These conodont faunas provide the first biostratigraphically constrained correlations between bathyal deposits of the Lemva Allochthone in the Polar Urals and the “standard” conodont zonation. Ostracodes found in the silicite of the typicus Zone are represented by Sagittibythere ? sp. and Tricornina (Bohemia) sp. The ostracodes are reported from the bathyal deposits of Urals for a first time. The traces of the global Mid-Aikuanian Event are recognized in the upper part of the Tournaisian bathyal succession. This event led to turnover in conodont associations and is followed by increasing in conodont diversity.
