Opis:
The paper describes the work of high speed charged spark ignition overhead poppet valve two-stroke engine, which enables to achieve higher total efficiency and exhaust gas emission comparable to four-stroke engines. The work of such engines is possible by proper choice ofvalve timings, geometrical parameters of inlet, outlet ducts and charge pressure. The engine has to be equipped with direct fuel injection system enabling lower emission of pollutants. The work is based on theoretical considerations performed in GT-Power in previous authors' research and carried out in CFD code (KIVA 3 V) for different engine configurations. The initial results included in the paper show influence of inlet port geometry and charge pressure on engine scavenging process. Additionally, optimum fuel spray injector position was considered in order to obtain proper fuel vaporization and avoid significant wall-wetting. The simulation results show that the nitrogen oxides arę considerably reduced in comparison to four-stroke engines because ofhigher internal exhaust gas recirculation. The innovation of this proposal is applying of poppet intake and exhaust valves with turbocharging in the two-stroke engine and obtaining a significant downsizing effect. The conclusion shows the possibilities of proper gas exchange process in this type of two-stroke engine and thus, the feasibility of its application as a power unii for transportation means with higher total efficiency than traditional engines with possible change of engine work in two modes: two- and four-stroke cycles.

Opis:
Small power two-stroke engines can be competitive in regard of work parameters and pollutants emission in relation to four-stroke engines at some modifications, particularly changing of fuelling system. The paper presents a modifted air-assisted direct fuel injection in a two-stroke engine, which changes propagation of fuel jet in the combustion chamber. The main problem of mixture formation is short time for fuel evaporation after injection which should begin after closing of the exhaust port. The paper shows interaction between the scavenge air, additional air stream and fuel jet from the injector located in the cylinder head, which can induce the small size of fuel droplets and fast evaporation. The computational results of fuel mixture formation and combustion process in direct fuel injection two-stroke engine Robin EC-12 with capacity 115 cm3 are presented. The simulation was carried out by use KIVA code with assumption of initial parameters from the experimental tests on the carburetted engine. Setting of the injector in a regard of the cylinder head decides of fuel motion and evaporation in the combustion chamber. Air-assisted fuel injection influences on higher mixing of fuel and better combustion than by using DFI system. The paper shows phases of mixture formation, combustion and concentration of the combustion product in the cylinder with additional air stream. Spray guided high pressure direct injection system in SI two-stroke engine enables fulfil the restrictions of gas emission of one-wheeler vehicles and small power units.

The present work defines main conception of modern, efficient and ecologic two-stroke engine. It indicates the scope of necessary modifications that have to be made in typical four-stroke engine to prepare it to work in two-stroke mode. Taking into account some limitations (especially in valve train design) authors performed several analyzes in order to check the possibility of proper scavenging process and obtain main engine characteristics. The paper contains description of simulation approach and selected mathematical models that was applied in carried over analyzes. The results of foregoing simulations, which were obtain taking advantage of GT-Power software should be considered as preliminary since several parameters have to be defined during research and 3D simulations. In order to expose advantages of modern two-stroke engine a simple comparison of it and its predecessor was performed taking into consideration BSFC maps. The objects of simulation were fluid flow, scavenging and combustion. This comparison indicates that proposed two-stroke engine achieve significantly less break specific fuel consumption (up to 27 g/kWh drop). Paper presents diagram of new type two-stroke engine with poppet valves, which is probably the most feasible layout of two-stroke engine, and GT-Power model of simulated single-cylinder engine based on four-stroke single cylinder engine.

Existing and future regulations on ship energy efficiency and methods for their improvement are presented in this work. The design and operational features of gas-fuelled low-speed main engines, liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification conditions, and amount of waste cold are compared. Using a simple linear regression model based on the least squares method, formulae were developed to predict the amount of waste cold as a function of the brake power of gas-fuelled low-speed main engines operating under ISO ambient conditions in Tier III-compliant mode. A sufficiently accurate prediction of the waste cold amount at the initial design stage is feasible due to the formulae developed as part of this work

The power and efficiency of a two-stroke engine strongly depends on the efficiency of the scavenging process which consists in removing the rest of the exhaust gases from the cylinder and filling it with a fresh charge. The quality of the charge exchange process is significantly influenced by the construction of the intake system. The paper presents a zero-dimensional model of the aircraft two-stroke opposed-piston diesel engine with two variants of the intake system: with a mechanical compressor and a turbocharger connected in series with a mechanical compressor. Simulation studies of the developed cases were carried out in the AVL BOOST software. For the defined engine operating points, its performance was compared for different designs of the intake system. It was confirmed that the use of a turbocharger with a mechanical compressor extends the range of operating at high altitudes.

Opis:
In two-stroke engines of the crankcase-compression type, the piston rings slide over not only the cylinder wall but also the cylinder ports. It is important for piston ring designers to understand how piston rings behave over cylinder ports. In order to clarify the axial motion of piston rings in two-stroke engines, we established a measurement method using light-emitting diodes (LEDs). We attached LEDs inside the piston, and leaked the backlight of LEDs through the side clearance between the piston ring side face and the piston ring groove side face. From the position of the leaked backlight in the piston ring groove, we determined the axial ring position in the ring groove. Our experiments set this piston with LEDs in an experimental two-stroke engine with a transparent cylinder, and investigated the effects of intake and exhaust ports on axial ring motion under motoring operations. Results indicated that the rings moved in the axial direction by the ring projection and catching in the intake and exhaust ports.

The performance of the engine strongly depends on the parameters of the combustion process. In compression ignition engines, the fuel injection timing has a significant influence on this process. The moment of its occurrence and its duration should be chosen so that the maximum pressure value occurs several degrees after TDC. In order to analyze the effect of the fuel injection timing on the performance of the tested two-stroke opposed-piston diesel engine, a zero-dimensional model was developed in the AVL BOOST program. Next, a series of simulations were performed based on the defined calculation points for maximum continuous power, which resulted in power, specific fuel consumption and mean in-cylinder pressure. Finally, the engine map was made as a function of the start of combustion angle.

Opis:
In this article the possibilities of liquid biofuel injection control in two-stroke engines are presented. This is a low cost in-cylinder fuel injection system for stratified charge engines which is much simpler than alternatives. The author worked out a system of pneumatic fuel injection by means of hot exhaust gases (according to conception Prof. St. Jarnuszkiewicz) drawn from one cylinder during the working stroke and, following the addition of fuel, forced into another cylinder during the compression stage. Spraying and injection of fuel by means of hot exhaust gases give additional possibilities of complete evaporation of light fuels, alternative fuels with extended fraction and heavier fuels, such as diesel oil, kerosene and vegetable oil. In the combustion system presented the process of preparing liquid hydrocarbon fuel for combustion is one of the main factors influencing the efficiency of the conversion of chemical energy contained in the fuel to mechanical energy. The most significant is the fuel phase transition, and especially a repeatability of the fuel dose per cycle. This process is inseparably associated with the physical properties of fuel, and changes of rate of pressure in gas duct. In practice, a two-stroke internal combustion engine with spark ignition and pneumatic injection accomplished by means of exhaust gases successfully uses liquid fuels with very different fractional and group composition, which may be very beneficial from the viewpoint of practical realization of utilization processes. The results of tests shown it is possible to reach a high repeatability of the fuel dose per cycle and maintaining uniform fuel doses for each cylinder.

Opis:
Today’s technology leveraging allows OP2S (Opposed Piston 2-Stroke) engine to be considered as an alternative for the conventional four-stroke (4S) engines as mechanical drive in various applications, mainly in transportation. In general, OP2S engines are suited to compete with conventional 4-stroke engines where power-to-weight ratio, power-to-bulk volume ratio and fuel efficiency are requirements. This paper does present a brief advent, as well as the renaissance of OP2S engines and the novel technologies which have been used in the new approach. Also precise thermodynamic benefits have been considered, to demonstrate the fundamental efficiency advantage of OP2S engines. Hence, simulations of two different engine configurations have been taken into consideration: a one-cylinder opposed piston engine and two-cylinder conventional piston four-stroke engine. In pursuance of fulfilling this goal, the engines have been simulated in AVL Boost™ platform which is one of the most accurate Virtual Engine Tools, to predict engine performance such as combustion optimization, emission and fuel consumption. To minimize the potential differences of friction losses, the bore and stroke per cylinder are taken as constant. The closed-cycle performance of the engine configurations is compared using a custom analysis tool that allows the sources of thermal efficiency differences to be identified and quantified. As a result, brake thermal efficiency, power and torque of OP2S engine have been improved compared to conventional engines while emission concern has been alleviated.

Marine propulsion shafting systems are exposed to torsional vibrations originating from excitations in their prime movers and propellers. It is essential to analyse their steady state response in the earliest stage of ship design. The paper describes the implementation of SimulationX software based upon simulation modelling for these calculations. This software can be used either by the design office of the shipyard or by the classification society for verification within the plan approval phase. Some specifics of the input data preparation are briefly discussed. In addition, the simulation results depend on the modelling approach chosen. For these reasons, the real two-stroke Diesel engine ship propulsion system was chosen and several different models were implemented for system modelling. SimulationX calculation results are compared with those of two well-known and field-proven programs that use an analytical approach. Finally, the results are compared with the measurements performed on the actual newly built ship. Discussion reviews the selected SimulationX model, and its verification and validation in the case of engine cylinders with normal ignition.

Two-stroke engines are distinguished by the highest overall efficiency among all main engines. This is not only due to the low speed, and large piston stroke, but also to the high combustion temperature, which results in an increase in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission. Technical solutions applied to bring main engines into compliance with current NOx emission standards set by the Tier III limits include the use of SCR and EGR systems, the implementation of the Otto cycle, and the application of liquified natural gas (LNG) as the low-emission fuel. Impact of the available Tier III-compliant technologies on the heat balance results is analysed using the example of the currently most popular dual-fuel main engines, i.e. WinGD X92DF and MAN G95ME-C10.5-GI. The possibilities of waste heat recovery in the electricity generation process and thereby improving the ship energy efficiency are discussed.
