Opis:
A preconditioned solution scheme for the computation of compressible flow in turbomachinery at arbitrary Mach numbers is presented. The preconditioning technique used is applied to a state-of-the-art explicit, time-marching Navier-Stokes code which originally was developed for compressible, high-speed turbomachinery applications. It combines the ideas of low Mach number preconditioning and artificial compressibility method into a unified approach where principally fluids with arbitrary equations of state can be simulated. As shown by the test cases presented, it allows the code to simulate flows efficiently and accurately independent of the Mach number. A description of the Navier-Stokes equations for rotating coordinate systems, along with the solution scheme and the details of the preconditioning method is given. Since turbomachinery computations are often performed on truncated domains, the solution scheme should be used in conjunction with non-reflecting boundary conditions. A change in the time-dependency of the equations due to preconditioning necessitates a modification of the boundary conditions. Thus, a derivation of the appropriate boundary conditions for the presented preconditioned scheme was performed and the resultant equations are given in this paper. The effectiveness of the new boundary conditions is demonstrated by comparing them with both boundary conditions that use the standard one-dimensional characteristic approach and the original boundary conditions for the non-preconditioned case.

Opis:
The paper presents a qualitative comparison of 2D and 3D computation of the flow field in a cone shaped turbine nozzle. The calculation yields a surface, S/sub 2/, for a given conical stream surface S/sub 1/. The S/sub 2/ stream surface represents the curvature of blading passages. This formulation is typical for the inverse problem. Based on a surface it is possible to design the shape of the blade. Results of 3D computation by means of FLUENT have been presented and compared with assumptions in the 2D model.

Opis:
The method for the selection of a calculation scheme for the evaluation of the flow behaviour of labyrinth seal with one straight fin, against smooth wall, was presented. Experimental results were obtained from measurement data carried out on the in house, vacuum test section. The advantage of the test rig is a circular shape of the labyrinth specimen, providing similar shape to configuration operated in practise. In computational fluid dynamics study different types of mesh resolution were tested, with variable volume discretization in the area of a labyrinth fin tip. Moreover, a wide range of turbulence models basing on k-ε and k-ω, exploiting the (Reynolds Average Navier Stokes) scheme, for the flow pattern evaluation, were examined. All obtained results were compared with literature data, covering research conducted on similar configurations. The presented study shows challenges as well as the possibilities of calculation simplification and compares results obtained by means of simulations and experiment. The proposed method is characterised by excellent agreement of computational results with experiment data.

Both basic computational fluid dynamics methods: the finite element method (FEM) and the finite volume method (FVM) have been used to simulate flow fields in a cross-flow fan (CFF). A review of previous numerical simulations of flow in CFF's is presented. The theorethical foundations of the applied numerical algorithms and specifications of the computer programs are given. The procedure of computations is described in detail. Computational results are shown in the form of contour and vector velocity and contour pressure plots.

Opis:
The impeller of an existing industrial pump (with both geometry and performance known) was analyzed and redesigned using an integrated, design/analysis, turbomachinery geometry modeling and flow simulation system. The purpose of the redesign was to achieve improved impeller performance (at the duty point). Fluid dynamics and geometry modeling parts of the design/analysis system were systematically applied: a) to analyse the existing impeller (impeller A), which was designed using conventional (routine in industry) hydraulic layout procedures, and b) to develop a new impeller (impeller B), using a coupled, multilevel 1D-Q3D-3D for the design and optimization. This paper discusses the features and advantages of the integrated design system, in which the coupled CAD/CFD approach is fully implemented. The analysis results are presented for impellers A and B, with the latter demonstrating a predicted increased efficiency and smaller size. Comparisons of the CFD results for both impellers reveal internal flow features that explain the improved impeller B performance levels.

Opis:
Multi-hole probes are simple and robust device to measurement of flow velocity magnitude and direction in wide range of angles of attack – up to 75°. They become popular as they may be easily use to measurement of unknown flow velocity, while optical methods, like PIV or LDA, require some knowledge about the flow for proper setting of measurement devices. Multi-hole probes are also more lasting in comparison with CTA hot-wire probes, which may be damaged by a dust. A multi-hole probe measures air pressure with one pressure tap on its tip and a few (usually 2, 4, 6 or more) taps on conical or semispherical surface of the probe tip. Based on measured pressures, some non-dimensional pressure coefficients are calculated, which are related to flow velocity direction (i.e. two angles in Cartesian or spherical coordinate system) and magnitude. Finding relations between these parameters is relatively complex, which for years was limiting application of multi-hole probes. The article summarizes methods of multi-hole probes calibration and use, which may be classified as nulling and non-nulling methods or – with other criteria – as global and local methods. The probe, which was presented in the article, was the 5-hole straight probe manufactured by Vectoflow GmbH and calibrated in the stand designed and manufactured at the Institute of Aviation. The local interpolation algorithm has been used for calibration, with some modifications aimed on mitigate of mounting uncertainty, which is related with the non-alignment of flow velocity direction and probe axis Results of calibration showed that the accuracy of presented methodology is satisfactory. The standard measurement uncertainty was assessed for 0.2° for the pitch angle and yaw angle, which is better than accuracy declared by the probe’s manufacturer (1.0°). The measurement uncertainty of the flow velocity is approximately 0.12 m/s, similarly like in manufacturer’s data.

Opis:
A finite volume numerical method for the prediction of a fluid flow in complex geometries such as turbomachinery channels has been parallelized using a domain decomposition approach. A mathematical formulation of a 3-D incompressible steady flow has been presented on the basis of the N-S equations in a grid-oriented co-ordinate system with contravariant velocity components. A parallelized pressure-based implicit algorithm with discretization on a staggered grid has been developed. A message exchange system with a boundary exchange, developed by the authors, has been described. Exemplary calculations have been carried out for a laminar flow through a curved duct and for an inviscid flow through a stage of the centrifugal pump. A good agreement has been obtained in both the cases. Despite considerable simplification that has been introduced in the flow through the pump stage, the computations have shown nearly the same pressure rise in the stage as the measurements. Further directions of numerical investigations of a flow through turbomachines, including in particular those devoted to pressure losses related to the rotor-stator interaction, have been mentioned.
