Opis:
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on public health all over the world. In order to prevent the spread of the virus, the majority of countries introduced restrictions which entailed considerable economic and social costs. The main goal of the article is to study how the lockdown introduced in Poland affected the spread of the pandemic in the country. The study used synthetic control method to this end. The analysis was carried on the basis of data from the Local Data Bank and a government website on the state of the epidemic in Poland. The results indicated that the lockdown significantly curbed the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland. Restrictions led to the substantial drop in infections - by 9500 cases in three weeks. The results seem to stay the same despite the change of assumptions in the study. Such conclusion can be drawn from the performance of the placebo-in-space and placebo-in-time analyses.

Opis:
To explore methods for a comprehensive assessment of the treatment effect of heavy metal pollution in the sewage sludge from China’s industrial parks, we studied the wastewater treatment plant of the Nanjing MV Industrial Park as an example. Eight common heavy metals in sewage sludge – Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Chromium (Cr), Nickel (Ni), Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd) were studied. The treatment effect of these containments was comprehensively assessed using the absolute niche fitness model, the relative niche model and the spatial niche fitness model. All three models showed that Pb > Cu > Ni > Hg > Cd > Cr > Zn > As in the samples. However, they produced – different numerical values – the absolute niche suitability model < the spatial niche suitability model < and the relative niche suitability model. Therefore, we concluded that special attention should be paid to the carcinogenic risk of As and Cr heavy metals to the person exposed to the sewage sludge.

The paper presents the examples of damage of elements caused by incorrect assessment of pipeline work conditions. The presented damage cases resulted in the need to replace pipelines. This work is an analysis pertaining to the impact of chemical and microbiological synergy of corrosion on stainless steel pipelines. The paper investigates the corrosion mechanisms that may occur under normal operating conditions at each water treatment station, and the methods of counteracting the corrosion were indicated. The analysis of the corrosion mechanisms was formulated taking into account the design stage, – the correctness of the steel grade choice by the designer, the stage of implementation – the most common implementation errors, and the operational stage – optimization of the technological system work and the effects of the introduced changes. The analysis was carried out at a water treatment plant in Poland with a maximum flow of 20,000 m3 a day-1, which draws raw water from deep water intakes and from a surface intake. The treatment technology includes an aeration system (aeration) and a two-stage treatment process using sand and carbon filters. The disinfection process and prophylaxis in the water treatment plant is based on the use of chlorine gas.

Opis:
Introduction and objective: It is likely that cardiovascular drugs will be used in epileptic patients because heart failure and hypertension are common comorbid conditions with epilepsy. Experimental studies show that some cardiovascular drugs can affect the protective activity of antiepileptics. The aim of this study was to examine the effects in mice of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (captopril and perindopril), angiotensin AT1 receptor antagonists (losartan and candesartan) and diuretics (hydrochlorothiazide and ethacrynic acid) on the anticonvulsant activity of vigabatrin (VGB), a second generation antiepileptic drug. Material and Methods: Adult Swiss mice were used in the study. The anticonvulsant action of VGB was assessed in the maximal electroshock seizure threshold test. Combined treatment with VGB and antihypertensive drugs was also tested for adverse effects in the passive avoidance task and chimney test. All drugs were administered intraperitoneally. Results: Captopril (50 mg/kg), perindopril (10 mg/kg), losartan (50 mg/kg), candesartan (8 mg/kg), hydrochlorothiazide (100 mg/kg) and ethacrynic acid (100 mg/kg) did not influence the protective action of VGB. The combined treatment with VGB (700 mg/kg) and antihypertensive drugs showed a strong tendency towards impaired retention in the passive avoidance task, and in the case of the combination of VGB with ethacrynic acid it reached statistical significance (P < 0.05). Mice were not disturbed in the chimney test following applied treatment. Conclusions: From the preclinical point of view, the use of the tested antihypertensive drugs in patients treated with VGB seems neutral regarding its anticonvulsant activity.

Opis:
An experiment to evaluate the effect of wood ash, river sand, mineral oil and dry pepper (Capcium spp) dust on the population (control) of Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky, 1855) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) (maize weevil) was conducted. The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of five (5) treatments; 0g, 5g river sand, 5g dry pepper dust, 5g wood ash and 5g mineral oil. All treatment were replicated three times. Data were taken on the number of population of Sitophilus zeamais emerging from individual treatments. Herein, weight loss on grain maize was taken for S. zeamais infestation. The effect of the various treatments on maize seed with S. zeamais was not significant (P>0.05), although the highest population numbers of the weevil was recorded in the control (0g). Zero population of S. zeamais was recorded in wood ash treatment at 5g, which significantly (P<0.05) protected the grains over the control. Significant (higher) weight loss was recorded in the control since no treatment was applied. All treatments except the control indicate the potential of reducing (controlling) weevil numbers. Data obtained in these experiments reveal that wood ash, pepper dust and river sand produced the most protective/control effect on the population of the weevil over the control. Result of the study show that river sand, pepper dust, wood ash and mineral oil (vegetable oil) performed positively, and hence, exert protectant properties on maize grains.

Opis:
Secondary or multiple remelted alloys are common materials used in foundries. For secondary (recycled) Al-Si-Cu alloys, the major problem is the increased iron presence. Iron is the most common impurity and with presence of other elements in alloy creates the intermetallic compounds, which may negatively affect the structure. The paper deals with effect of multiple remelting on the microstructure of the AlS9iCu3 alloy with increased iron content to about 1.4 wt. %. The evaluation of the microstructure is focused on the morphology of iron-base intermetallic phases in caste state, after the heat treatment (T5) and after natural aging. The occurrence of the sludge phases was also observed. From the obtained results can be concluded that the multiple remelting leads to change of chemical composition, changes in the final microstructure and also increases sludge phases formation. The use of heat treatment T5 led to a positive change of microstructure, while the effect of natural aging is beneficial only to the 3rd remelting.

Opis:
The experiment studied the effect of various mulching terms of ‘Foxtrot’ tulips with wheat straw in combination with spraying of plantations with herbicides using various doses and different amounts of working liquid. The mulch was laid out just after planting and after the soil had frozen. The experiment included combinations, in which the mulch was left until the end of the growing season or removed in spring. Spraying with single (linuron 675 g·ha–1 + lenacyl 1000 g·ha–1) or double herbicide dose (linuron 1350 g·ha–1 + lenacyl 2000 g·ha–1) was made before covering the soil with mulch and also on mulch – two weeks after planting the bulbs, or in the spring after thawing the soil. Volumes of 300 dm3 and 600 dm3 of working liquid were used for spraying. Tulips covered with mulch bloomed 2–3 days later and formed longer shoots as compared to non-mulched ones. The highest yield of marketable bulbs and the first-selection ones was obtained from tulips mulched immediately after planting and sprayed 2 weeks later with herbicides used in a single dose of 600 dm3 of a working liquid. Mulching of tulips after soil freezing and removal of mulch in spring adversely affects the number and weight of commercial bulbs. The lowest yield was obtained in combinations, in which the mulch was not used. The use of additional nitrogen fertilization before laying out the mulch did not affect the yield of tulips. Herbicides can be used both before mulching and after covering the plantation with mulch. It is not necessary to increase the dose of the agent and the amount of water.

Opis:
This study presents a protocol for a fast and effective in vitro axenic culture of Huperzia selago (Huperziaceae Rothm.) sporophytes, a club moss which is a source of huperzine A, an alkaloid of a considerable therapeutic potential extensively investigated for its uses as treatment for some neurodegenerative diseases. The proposed procedure allowed approximately tenfold shortening of the species developmental stages with the omission of the gametophyte stage while the sporophyte mass could be increased tenfold within a 6-month period. The cultures were established using vegetative propagules (bulbils) procured from sporophytes growing in the wild without degrading the habitats of this endangered plant species. Explants underwent surface and internal disinfection to eliminate the epiphytic and endophytic bacteria and fungi. In in vitro cultures, the optimum results were achieved using Moore (Mr) medium without growth regulators or supplemented with 0.015 mg/l IBA and 0.3 mg/l kinetin. These media ensured both viability of the propagules and their further development. The biomass growth index for H. selago sporophytes grown from propagules, determined at 3 months of culture (1 passage) on Mr medium with IBA and kinetin was 650%. At 6 months, the biomass growth index increased to 1114%. Vigorous growth of adventitious roots, especially on Mr medium with the addition of 0.25 mg/l NAA, and callus formation on shoot apices were observed. At 6 months of culture, some sporophytes obtained from the bulbils were used as the initiating material for shoot subcultures, which developed best on Mr medium with IBA and kinetin.

The model takes into consideration thermophysical and metallurgical properties of th remelting steel, laser beam parameters and boundary conditions of the process. As a result of heating the material, in the area of laser beam operation a weld pool is being created whose shape and size depends on convection caused by the Marangoni force. The results of mechanical properties and microstructure observation of low carbon copper bearing steel with high addition of molybdenum are presented in this paper. This steels were characterized by contents of molybdenum in the range from 1% to 3% wt. After the thermo -mechanical processing the steels were subsequently quenched and tempered at different temperatures (500-800°C) for 1h. The changes of mechanical properties as function of tempering temperature were typical for the steel with the copper addition. The sudden drop of impact resistance after tempering from 575°C to 600°C was caused probably by precipitates of Laves phase of type Fe2Mo.

Opis:
Removal of water soluble Reactive Black KN-B from aqueous media by means of titanium dioxide/attapulgite (TiO2/ATP) composites was studied in a batch system. The composites were investigated using X-ray diffraction and surface area analysis. Under UV irradiation, the photocatalytic effect of TiO2/ATP composites, pH and reaction temperature on the decolorization rate of Reactive Black KN-B were investigated in detail. The adsorption experiments of TiO2/ATP composites showed that the isotherms and adsorption kinetics were well followed by the Langmuir model and the zero order equation, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of TiO2/ATP composites for Reactive Black KN-B calculated by the Langmuir model was 20.08 mg g-1. It can be concluded that the TiO2/ATP composites could be good photocatalysts/adsorbents for treating Reactive Black KN-B wastewater.
