The author considers the process of adopting of a new state symbols in Russia after the collapse of the USSR. This process was influenced by different traditions and by the struggle of different political forces that sought to consolidate their own „own” symbols and values (democratic, national-imperial, communistic, etc.). As a result, the adoption of the new flag, the coat of arms and the anthem was the result of a „compromise imposed from above” which ended the „war of symbols”, but confirmed the uncertainty of the national idea.

Goal – the article deals with the regional administration initiation and evolution of the Ukrainian lands in the context of statehood origin and national traditions of governance formation. Research methodology – the methodological basis of the work consists in comprehensive, interdisciplinary, systemic and historical approaches to the analysis of regional administration development. Synthesis, generalization, comparison, observation, retrospective analysis as well as other general scientific methods were used while research conducting. In particular, the historical method was applied to realize a retrospective analysis of the emergence and evolution of domestic administrative traditions. Score/results – democracy, elections, ability to self‑organization, restriction of central power by self‑government elements are considered its characteristic elements of domestic administrative features. National administrative traditions and historical experience is presented as an important component within the process of introducing European principles and standards of public administration and reform implementation in the modern Ukraine. Originality/value – the originality and novelty of the scientific paper lies in the definition of national administrative traditions that contribute to the adaptation of foreign experience for the regional administration development and the factors limiting its use. In modern Ukraine, there are practically no fundamental studies examining the problems of adapting the European administrative experience in an organic relationship with the domestic tradition of governance. Therefore, the research remains relevant in the scientific and practical aspects.

The paper presents a descriptive study of philosophy of teaching Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic as an integral part of religious education, and at the same time it points out  the main problems of this education which are connected with the fact that the original language of the Tanakh (one of the basic textbooks for religious education) is not the native language of the students being taught  (even Israelis whose native language is Hebrew do not speak Biblical Hebrew) and studying it demands knowledge of Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic. Results. However, as the ideal method for teaching a foreign language does not exist, the choice of teaching methods must be based on the fact that each student or teacher prefers different method of work.

This article is devoted to the analysis of new tendencies in the painting of Uzbekistan since the independence. The pivotal changes which have influenced the development of art process in the Republic, caused by refusal former ideological norms, restoration of historical and cultural continuity and traditional spirituality with nation ideals, conservative attitude to heritage, become apparent. Freedom of artistic expression has become a main principle in art. A new system of ideas comes, leading to the abandonment of past trends replaced by the interest to different areas of twentieth-century modernism. Appeal to the traditions of the people of culture stimulated the new interpretation and understanding of their own history, national and universal values at the present stage of their development, and intensified traditional and innovative artistic concept. The analysis of some pieces which is carried out by the author has shown that such tendencies as realistic, symbolic and metaphorical and conditional and decorative, connected with reference to mythopoetic heritage, to traditional and innovative art concepts developed in the painting of Uzbekistan. The principle of dynamic development in close contact with world art process, when traditions are preserved, encourages the development of major cultural achievements of the past and familiarizing with new modern forms.

This paper addresses patterns of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century structural and ideological transformations of liberalism in Central European party politics that might be perceived as region-specific. Focusing on the Czech, German, and Slovene speaking lands of the Cisleithanian half of the Habsburg Monarchy, it also shortly discusses the Imperial German, Hungarian and Polish Galician contexts. Perhaps the most striking aspect of the complex interplay between ideologies, organized political movements, and political languages within the context of rapidly changing political cultures during the last third of the nineteenth century and first quarter of the twentieth was the changing relationship between the national and liberal components within the national liberal traditions. By 1900 the national came to visibly prevail over the liberal: nationalism was gaining in strength and intensity and was adopting new, more aggressive and integralist forms. From the turn of the century onwards it is therefore more proper to talk about heirs of liberalism in terms of party politics rather than simply liberals. The nationalist turn of the Central European national liberals and their political heirs, reached its peak by the turn of the century and continued to develop further into the interwar period. Partial abandonment of classical liberal tenets largely distinguished the contemporary organized liberalism to the West as well. What makes the Central European developments specific in this regard is their direction, which unlike the emergence of currents of new or social liberalism in the West, to a notable degree led towards adoption of anti-liberal and radically nationalist positions and therefore partial vanishing of liberal traditions.

In Canada, Yukon First Nations are politically powerful and, when viewed by an outsider, everything appears to be progressing well. But the adoption of the Western political model has a downside. We have generally sacrificed our culture for that political power. The loss of our culture has resulted in many social problems and this essay discusses what has resulted from those problems, specifically our high death rate. Ironically, our death ritual, the Potlatch, is one of the strongest surviving cultural traditions we still exercise, while our languages, laws, art, lifestyle, and spirituality are almost all forgotten.

The aim of the paper is to present a model of the principal driving forces responsible for the proliferation of roadside memorials in Poland. Based on desk research, fieldwork and interviews, a three dimensional model has been developed. There are three dimensions of road[1]side memorials: 1) global, 2) societal, and 3) individual. Each of the dimensions is composed of two pairs of distinctive elements, i. e. motoring heritage and memorial mania, wayside crosses and cemetery traditions, and trauma and religiosity.

The author demonstrates a non-standard, innovative approach of the abandoned Church revitalization, which manifested in the method of the lost volume reconstruction and the new system organization of painting and decorating. The experience of the reconstruction of the Goretovo Church is useful in terms of understanding the complex relationship of creative freedom, the canonical framework and conservation standards.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The article presents the way in which the narration concerning the identity of the town of Sanok is created. The aim of the article is to show who and how “tells the town’s story.” The subjects of the study are narrations functioning in the social space of Sanok. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research proceeded to establish the “content” of the place’s identity, the entities that construct it, and the ways of maintaining and manifesting them. It was based on the existing data i.e. Sanok photo albums, guide books or websites. The first stage of the research depended on the quantitative analysis whereas in the second stage the data was processed using the qualitative analysis to discover and reveal individual perspectives of perceiving the city adopted by the authors of the texts. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The article describes the process of building a narration on the identity of the place, which is a response to the crisis caused by the process of systemic transformation. It shows how different narrations on the identity of the town are constructed and how they are changed when the socio-economic situation of Sanok is changing. RESEARCH RESULTS: The data analysis shows that the identity of Sanok is a social construct influenced by many factors. It is not stable and it is being constructed all the time. CONCLUSION, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Each decade brings changes in the perception of the town’s identity. The changing socio-political and economic situation will change the existing narration, which is worth investigating.

Attempts are also made to evaluate the Polish strategic culture, with an emphasis on the perception of the role of military forces in it. The main research problem is as follows: Is strategic culture really present in Poland and what were the conditions for its development? Specific questions to be answered are: What has characterized strategic culture in Poland? What factors have determined the shape of Polish strategic culture? What is its impact on foreign policy and Poland’s security? How are armed forces perceived in Polish strategic culture? The main conclusion is that Poland has its own strategic culture, which has been shaped by historical experience.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges. Comparing pre-pandemic and pandemic experiences led to the re-evaluation of the role of festivities and their associated traditions. Through semi-structured interviews, people’s perceptions of festivities during the two-year-long period of repetitive social restrictions were investigated in Latvia (Latgale region). Data analysis revealed that the quality of festivities related to otherworldliness decreased. Celebration as a powerful practice for developing a sense of togetherness and experiencing collective joy was commonly acknowledged. Festivities were primarily perceived as a tool of socialization and collective identification, as well as an opportunity for entertainment and creative expression.

Opis:
In the Augustan Age, a new aesthetic preference was propagated in the Roman Empire – the surface of white marble was valued as it symbolised the strength and superiority of the ‘new age’. Soon, an immense trade in high quality marble over land and sea developed to meet the emergent demand. While the development and scale of this trade is well studied, the repercussions that the new aesthetic preference had on the local architectural traditions in areas where no marble was close at hand is not commonly considered. In this contribution, two developments are traced, taking the Corinthian capital as the leitmotif. First, in the short period between c. 40 and 10 BC, patrons would choose imitation of marble in plaster to meet up with the demands of the new standard and to demonstrate their adherence to the Empire. In the second line of development, a different path was taken – a conscious use of local materials which went hand in hand with the development of a new type of capital, the so-called ‘Nabataean blocked-out’ capital. This combination turned into a new vernacular tradition across large parts of the eastern Mediterranean. Both developments were local responses to a new ‘global’ trend and can therefore be viewed as a phenomenon of glocalisation in the Roman Period.

This paper explores the presence of gender-conscious attitudes in the works of the Czech author Lenka Procházková (born 1951), a member of the dissident movement during the communist regime. It argues that her writings took issue with patriarchal social structures, yet sometimes camouflaged these challenges behind criticism of the totalitarian rule. These expressions, which one might be tempted to consider as feminist from a Western and 21st-century point of view, emerged within East European dissident culture and probably without exposure to Western feminist concepts. Procházková developed a model of an inner exile for dissidents that originated in a canonical work of Czech literature by Božena Němcová and from which one of her female protagonists draws strength. Thus, her works suggest that Western gender theories are limited in their potential to assess East European dissident women’s writing, when they fail to include local literary traditions.

This paper starts with a detailed analysis of Jan Assmann’s qualitative distinction between cultural memory and communicative memory. The purpose of this analysis is to highlight both the strengths and the limitations of this seminal distinction, and to also reflect on what cultural theorists and contemporary artists could learn through Assmann’s distinction since artistic production also employs cultural memory formats that do not exclude cultural traditions in their materializations. In line with these considerations, this paper aims to disentangle what “tradition” means to contemporary artists. Following Edward Shils and Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophy of “tradition,” the paper argues that cultural tradition does not necessarily have an oppressive character and the rebellion and suspicion against it is at the heart of tradition itself. Thus, the traditional/contemporary binary can be precluded by reconsidering how “tradition” and “traditional” are conceptualized considering philosophy of tradition and artistic memory.
