Opis:
Closed depressions (CDs) are landforms typical for loess areas. 1761 CDs have been inventoried within the Nałęczów Plateau. Large concentrations of CDs: 30–40 forms per km2 occur in areas where thick (more than 10 m) complex of glacigenic sediments (mainly glacial tills) or clay (limniglacial) deposits underlying loess cover. Areas with a low concentration of CDs (fewer than 10 forms per km2) correspond to areas where the loess cover lies on a bedrock (opokas) or on thin sandy-gravelly deposits. The distributions of CDs depends on the conditions of Pleistocene permafrost development and melting, linked with lithological properties of the sediments under loess cover.

Pleistocene glacigenic sediments around the Polish-Belarussian border are correlated. Tills of the Narevian Glaciation are present in both countries, are those in Poland possibly being order. Within the older South Polish Glaciations (Elsterian) there is no definite evidence of deposits of the Nidanian Glaciation in Belarus, though the younger of these glaciations (Sanian 1 and 2), seem to correspond to the Berezinian Glaciation sensu lato (Yaseldinian and Berezinian sensu stricto). During the older Middle Polish Glaciations (Saalian), comprising two glaciations (Liviecian, Krznanian), the Scandinavian ice sheets occupied Polish territory only. Till of the Odranian + Wartanian Glaciation in Poland is correlated with till of the Dnieperian Glaciation in Belarus. There are similar deposits of the Vistulian Glaciation (Poozerian) in both countries.

Tertiary clays and tills, the most widespread soils in Poland, were used for the examination of swelling, expansion and shrinkage properties. Results of laboratory tests and the values of selected parameters obtained by indirect methods show that the Tertiary clays examined, when compared with Quaternary tills, show greater volumetric changes under the influence of water, which is primarily connected with their higher silt content.

Opis:
The study encompassed outcrops of glacial tills (topsoil, subsoil-1, subsoil-2) of the maximum stadial of the Vistulian Glaciation and of the Wartanian Stadial of the Odranian Glaciation, occurring along the maximum extent of the Vistulian ice sheet. The youngest Polish glacial tills show very similar concentrations of REE and Th. The concentrations of these elements vary across a wide range from 0.08 mg/kg (Tm and Lu) to 70.3 mg/kg (Ce), with slightly higher values for the older tills (Wartanian). Both these tills show clear fractionation of LREE and HREE, with a higher and more varied LREE concentration. The most prominent feature distinguishing one till from the other is the distribution of REE fractions along their vertical sections. In the younger (Vistulian) tills the maximum concentration of individual LREE is found at a depth of 1.0 m, and of HREE, Sc and Th, at 2.0 m; while in the older (Wartanian) tills the highest concentrations of all elements investigated are observed at a depth of 1.0 m. Also, the mineral compositions of the tills are very alike. The dominant minerals are quartz (average 56%) and feldspars (approximately 9%), with a trend of decreasing concentrations with depth. There are no carbonates in the topsoil (0.3 m level), and the clay minerals are dominated by illite (approximately 16%) and kaolinite (average 5%). Statistical analysis indicates over a dozen factors determining the concentration of REE and Th in both tills. Three of them have a crucial (96% of total variation) effect on the concentrations of these elements. These factors are probably of geogenic nature, intimately associated with similar source areas, and with similar processes of deposition, diagenesis and weathering of the tills.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to establish a correlation between the liquid limit value obtained in the Casagrande apparatus (wL/cup) and in the cone penetrometer (wL/cone) for typical glacial sediments from west-central Poland and compare them with the correlation equations published in the literature. The following correlation was formulated: wL/cone = 0.91wL/cup+ 1.98. The analysis presented in this paper proves that deriving a generalized and universal relationship wL/cup/wL/cone for all cohesive soils, regardless of their origin, is very challenging and may not be reliable for use in the engineering practice. It is verified that, in the range of low values of liquid limit, the cone penetrometer gives higher values of wL than those obtained from the Casagrande apparatus. However, for the Polish postglacial soils analysed in this paper, the cone penetrometer underestimates the results in relation to the Casagrande apparatus above wL = 22%. For the purpose of this study, wL = 22% was defined as “the point of equivalent results” (wL/cone = wL/cup).

Opis:
The revision of classification methodologies for determination of soil expansivity revealed that parameters most frequently used for this purpose are: the liquid limit, plasticity index and swelling parameters which also predominate in older systems of expansive soil assessment, regarded as classical. Seventy-nine soil samples, including Neogene clays and glaciall tills from Central Poland, with a wide range of plasticity were examined for a comparative analysis of soil expansivity with a use of eight empirical methods. The study revealed that Neogene clays are mostly highly and very highly expansive, while glacial tills exhibit low to medium expansivity. Compared to classifications considering soil mineralogy indicators, those correlated solely to Atterberg limits and related parameters were found to overestimate soil expansivity. It is evident that the classifications are in better agreement for glacial tills than for clays. The comparison of mineral composition measured and predicted from swelling tests yielded consistent results.

This paper outlines a new approach to reconstructing Vistulian ice sheet limits in NE Poland and adjacent areas of Lithuania and Belarus. It is based on geological investigations of landforms and deposits either of a hypothetical boundary to the Vistulian ice sheet limits. The main conclusions are: 1 - the area was covered twice by the Vistulian ice sheet; the first time during the Świecie Stadial (67-50 ka BP) and the second time during the Main Stadial (24-12 ka BP); 2 - the limit of the older stadial was farther to the south a that of the younger one; 3 - due to covering of the Eemian sediments by the ice sheet of the Świecie Stadial the limit of the Vistulian Glaciation has moved about 15-20 km southwards.

Opis:
This paper presents the characteristics of the expansivity and quantitative prediction of heave of clay soils from Poland based on suction testing. 11 Neogene clays and 6 glacial tills, differing in genesis and plasticity, were analyzed to identify the expansive potential using eight empirical methods. The laboratory studies included measurements of soil-water characteristic curves and soil index properties. Data from water content, volume and suction measurements served to determine the suction compression index Ch and the suction-water content index Dh/Dw of the soils examined. The values of these indices are clearly dependent of the clay fraction content in tested soils. Compared with glacial tills, Neogene clays are expected to exhibit larger changes in volume due to changes in soil suction. Comparative results of the evaluation of expansivity suggest that the chosen classification methodologies provided consistent expansion ratings for glacial tills, while values for Neogene clays vary from low to very high. The lowest expansivity classes have been obtained from evaluation based on soil suction. The McKeen (1992) method has been adopted for calculations of the potential field heave of Neogene clays and glacial tills. In order to provide a rational estimation of expansive soil behavior, specialists should take into consideration the specific site and design features.

Opis:
The selected parameters of the Wartanian and Odranian tills, with relation to their spatial occurrence, grain size distribution, mineralogical composition, matric suction and other physical characteristics, are presented. The assessment of the lithogenesis and stress history on the microstructure is attempted. The comparison of the compression and permeability characteristics from field and laboratory tests has been performed. Laboratory consolidation tests carried out with up to 20MPa vertical stress, revealed two yield stress values, one in the range of a couple hundreds kPa, the other in the range of a couple thousands kPa. Based on those results, the reliability of the soil preconsolidation assessment, with the use of the two different methods is discussed. The aspect of the triaxial strength reduction under the dynamic loading of diverse frequency and amplitude is raised. The research results depict a variety of possible geological-engineering characteristics, under the divergent constraints scenarios, of compression or strength weakening origin. The effects of the specialized research program will widen the possibilities of physio-mechanical and structural characterization of soils for geological-engineering purposes.

Opis:
Localised landslide activity has been observed in the area of the plateau slope analysed, in the vicinity of the planned Warsaw Southern Ring Road. Using calculation models quantitative and qualitative evaluations of the impact of natural and anthropogenic load factors on slope stability (and hence, safety) are made. The present paper defines six stages of slope stability analysis, leading to an indication of optimum slope design in relation to the development planned. The proposed procedure produces a ranking of factors that affect slope stability. In the engineering geological conditions under consideration, the greatest factors impacting degradation and failure of slope stability are changes in soil strength due to local, periodic yielding and the presence of dynamic loads generated by intensification of road traffic. Calculation models were used to assess the impact of destabilisation factors and to obtain mutual equivalence with 3D-visualisation relations. Based on this methodology, various scenarios dedicated to specific engineering geological conditions can be developed and rapid stability evaluations of changing slope loads can be performed.
