    The growing number of the elderly in many countries has made it necessary to develop a wellthought-out policy. In the European Union, the concept of lifelong learning is being promoted which includes third-age universities aimed to activate the elderly through education, learning, expanding knowledge and developing interests, as well as a way of actively spending free time and meeting new people. Third age universities (U3A) have been operating in Poland for over 40 years, but they are very rarely analysed. This article measures the efficiency of twenty U3As operating within state universities in Poland in the 2017/2018 academic year. A non-radial SBM model, which is a non-parametric DEA method, was used to analyse efficiency. The results show that seven U3As were 100% efficient. Two were in a quantitative (number of students) or a qualitative (number of classes) model, and five in both models simultaneously. However, most universities focused on the number of students rather than the number of classes offered to their students.

    The article emphasizes the importance of senior education being a form of prevention from social exclusion. The first part is dedicated to basic terminology and the opportunities in senior education within the Czech Republic are also being defined. Particular attention is devoted to the risks associated with the period of the Covid-19 pandemic when the risk of social exclusion increased due to the impossibility of interaction with others, so the seniors often became a neglected group in social isolation.

    Universities of the third age have become very popular in Poland and in the world. As institutions dealing with lifelong learning, they have the appropriate competencies to ensure that the various needs of seniors are met. U3A, established at UPJPII in Kraków in 2011, is one of such programs, dynamically operating in Poland. It is aimed not only at increasing the level of general knowledge but also at the religious formation of the students. The university has a religious profile and implements a pastoral and educational program, that includes lectures and workshops in the field of the Bible and anthropology, ethics, theology, philosophy and history of the Church, as well as an educational and cultural program (religious tourism, theatre arts), that is meant as a form of creative support for seniors. Plenary lectures and seminar workshops are complemented with the offer of additional educational and developmental classes. They include foreign language learning, computer courses, tourism, sports and cultural activities. Thanks to our U3A, many elderly people have improved their self-esteem and sense of dignity. They have also learned how to overcome problems related to old age and barriers preventing them from full participation in social and parish life.

Różnorodność realizowanych przez UTW działań m.in. z obszaru edukacji, kultury, profilaktyki zdrowotnej doskonale podkreśla fakt, że należą one do placówek, które obejmują zakresem swych działań nie tylko kształcenie, ale również wsparcie społeczne, uczestnictwo społeczne czy animację społeczno-kulturalną.
    The importance of universities of the third age in the lives of older people is determined by the fields of interest and activities they are offered there. U3As constitute essential and valuable areas of activation and socio-cultural animation of the elderly. The variety of activities realized by U3As, among others from the area of education, culture, and health prevention, perfectly underlines the fact that they are institutions, which include in the scope of their activities not only education, but also social support, social participation and socio-cultural animation.

    The elderly are currently becoming one of the subjects of a global culture. As a consequence of a substantial increase in the number of individuals belonging to this age-group, the social status of the elderly is constantly growing. This change has resulted in science “re-accustoming” with the issue of the old age, and the culture has been promoting its new and medially attractive quality. This article analyzes the relevance of the stereotypes and prejudices conditioning the quality of life among the elderly. The authors discuss the new challenges resulting from the demographic revolution that is taking place right now. The examples employed here are to facilitate turning the theory of active aging in a friendly environment into practice. Nevertheless, the authors are aware that this change will not be an easy or a swift process.

    Opis:
    The ministerial program Support for University of The Third Age is a project that considers areas and directions of support enabling the improvement of quality and life standards of the elderly towards dignified aging. In this article I describe the social impact of this program by the implementation of my original project Passion, professionalism, creativity – the development path of the University of the Third Age. The beneficiary of the project was the Faculty of Pedagogy at the University of Rzeszów. We invited six other Universities of the Third Age from the Podkarpackie province to cooperate with us. After the project had been completed, I conducted a survey to obtain the feedback from the elderly – participants in the project on their perception of the ministerial program. The article presents the results of the survey and key conclusions concerning the social impact of the presented governmental program.
    Program ministerialny Wsparcie Uniwersytetów Trzeciego Wieku jest przedsięwzięciem uwzględniającym obszary i kierunki wsparcia umożliwiające poprawę jakości i poziomu życia osób starszych na rzecz godnego starzenia się. W artykule opisuję społeczne oddziaływanie tego programu poprzez realizację autorskiego projektu Pasja, profesjonalizm, kreatywność – drogą rozwoju Uniwersytetu Trzeciego Wieku. Beneficjentem projektu był Wydział Pedagogiczny Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego. Do współpracy zaprosiliśmy sześć Uniwersytetów Trzeciego Wieku działających w województwie podkarpackim. Po zakończeniu projektu przeprowadziłam badania, które miały na celu pozyskanie od seniorów – uczestników projektu informacji na temat postrzegania przez nich programu ministerialnego. W artykule prezentuję wyniki badań i kluczowe konkluzje dotyczące społecznego oddziaływania zaprezentowanego programu rządowego.
