Opis:
Background: Spinal pain is a common problem in developed societies. In recent years, more and more people have been found to complain about spinal pain. Therefore, it would seem that back pain remains a major problem, a burden for the patient, the family, and the economy. If the pain is severe, it can cause difficulties with performing even the most basic activities of everyday life. The quest for methods to reduce this complaint may contribute to improving the quality of life for many people. One of the more commonly chosen forms of therapy for back pain is therapeutic massage. Massage therapy has a long history with back pain treatment and has been found to produce various beneficial effects that are associated with endorphin release. It can also enhance local blood flow which could increase the efficacy of local pain mediators. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic massage in the treatment of back pain in a 69-year-old woman. Case report: The subject was a 69-year-old woman reporting pain in the cervical and lumbar segments of the spine, BH = 154.2 cm, BM = 90.0 kg, BMI = 37.85 k/m² (obesity), waist circumference = 114.1, hip circumference = 118.2 cm, WHR = 0.96 (android obesity). The 11-point VAS scale was used in the assessment of her pain, where 0 means no pain, and 10 unbearable pain. The Laitinen Pain Scale (LPS) is a questionnaire which examines the nature of pain in four areas: the intensity of the pain, how frequently the pain occurs, the application of painkillers, and limiting motor activity. Before starting the therapy and immediately after the end of the therapy, researchers conducted a physical examination which included taking measurements of spinal mobility using the SFTR method. Before the first treatment, researchers conducted an interview was conducted about the need for the massage. 10 massages were performed after 60 minutes each, and were done every other day. Researchers performed a pain assessment with the VAS scale both before and after the procedures, which ultimately showed a reduction of the symptoms in the cervical and lumbar sections. The LPS scale showed a reduction of symptoms in three areas. The mobility of the spine had likewise increased. Conclusions: After a series of therapeutic massage treatments, there was a reduction in pain and improved spinal mobility.

Opis:
The dynamic development of research focusing on effective elements in psychotherapy has revealed not only which therapeutic techniques are particularly effective in treating specific disor-ders, but also which elements of the therapeutic relationship make psychotherapy work. The latter include therapeutic alliance and therapist’s empathy. Both of these concepts are complex, multidimensional constructs; they seem to share one crucial element – the humanization (mentalization) of the client: the fact that the therapist ascribes psychological depth and agency to his/her patient. In this context, we formulate a question concerning the factors that might facilitate or interfere with this kind of therapist’s attitude. We look for an answer to this question not only in the literature on psychotherapy but also in the area of social psychology. Taking into consideration the conclusions derived from both research domains, we formulate recommendations for clinical practice intended to humanize the relationship between the therapist and his/her client. We also formulate research questions aimed at empirical verification of the recommendations.

Opis:
Reflections on the uniquely human dimensions of behavior over the last few decades have become a meeting space connecting different sciences. The holistic health model emphasizes the subjectivity of man. Humans are open and active, and remain in relationships with others; they relate to the world they live in and seek meaning. Subjectivity in the psychological perspective can be described in three ways: subjectivity as identity, individuality, specific experience of self; subjectivity as the ability to initiate, regulate, direct, and realize goal-oriented and autonomous activity; subjectivity as the application of one’s own system of values. Subjectivity or causality (core features agency) expresses itself in the ability to make choices and planning, but also to directing actions and the realization of plans. The motivation to begin psychotherapy is influenced by numerous motives and conditions. Internal motivation is the main subjective resource in therapy. People internally motivated function better in better areas of life. They are characterized by greater involvement, activity, trust in their own abilities, persistence, creativity, a feeling of self-worth and general well-being. They experience engagement and immersion in the activities they undertake. The experience of causality – understood as the experience of being the author of events, the experience of having influence over events – is the fundamental cause without which the feeling of self-causality will not appear during development. As noted by R. White, it is a fundamental experience for good functioning and coping with the challenges of life, including illness.

Verification of calculations of the depth-dose distributions in water, using GEANT4 (version of 4.9.3) and MCNPX (version of 2.7.0) Monte Carlo codes, was performed for the scatterer-phantom system used in the dosimetry measurements in the proton therapy of eye tumours. The simulated primary proton beam had the energy spectra distributed according to the Gauss distribution with the cut at energy greater than that related to the maximum of the spectrum. The energy spectra of the primary protons were chosen to get the possibly best agreement between the measured relative depth-dose distributions along the central-axis of the proton beam in a water phantom and that derived from the Monte Carlo calculations separately for the both tested codes. The local depth-dose differences between results from the calculations and the measurements were mostly less than 5% (the mean value of 2.1% and 3.6% for the MCNPX and GEANT4 calculations). In the case of the MCNPX calculations, the best fit to the experimental data was obtained for the spectrum with maximum at 60.8 MeV (more probable energy), FWHM of the spectrum of 0.4 MeV and the energy cut at 60.85 MeV whereas in the GEANT4 calculations more probable energy was 60.5 MeV, FWHM of 0.5 MeV, the energy cut at 60.7 MeV. Thus, one can say that the results obtained by means of the both considered Monte Carlo codes are similar but they are not the same. Therefore the agreement between the calculations and the measurements has to be verified before each application of the MCNPX and GEANT4 codes for the determination of the depth-dose curves for the therapeutic protons.

This rich source of health-enhancing substances is used in treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal system and bile ducts as well as inflammatory diseases of the skin. With their antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, A. eupatoria infusions are used to alleviate throat diseases and are recommended to occupational voice users.

Opis:
Telomeres are the specialized nucleoprotein structures associated with eukaryotic chromosomal ends, which are essential for maintaining the stability of the linear eukaryotic chromosomes. Progressive telomere shortening is an inevitable occurrence in normal somatic cells due to the end-replication problem leading to limited replication efficiency. The hallmark characteristics of human cancer cells include infinite reproductive potential, uncontrolled proliferation and immortality. These abilities of transformed cancerous cells are mainly due to the maintenance of their telomeres since degradation of chromosomal telomeric ends leads to cellular senescence or death. Thus telomere biology is important in the study of human cancer development. The mechanism by virtue the cancer cells are able to divide indefinitely is by maintaining telomeres. Activity of telomerase, a telomere-elongating ribonucleoprotein reverse transcriptase enzyme, is responsible for inducing the property of immortality to cancer cells. In humans nearly about 80% to 90% cancer cells activate telomerase and elongate their telomeres to overcome the end-replication problem. Telomere shortening suppresses cancer formation in contrast according to certain reports it sometimes promotes genomic instability which leads to enhancement of carcinogenesis and consequently the development of malignancy. Majority of cancer cells activate telomerase, but it remains mysterious as to find the reasons of the fact that certain cancer cells often show shorter telomeres in comparison to the cells in the surrounding normal tissues. This controversial role of telomerase associated with certain transformed cells leading to the cancerous state in relation to its role in normal cells is an interesting field to study which points out to the fact of development of cancer cells targeting drugs based on telomerase activities as an alternative weapon in combating against this dreaded human disease. The present review focuses on the activity of telomerase in telomere maintenance in the development of cancerous cells in humans, the use of telomerase as an assay technique for cancer detection as well as the anti-cancer therapeutic approach of targeting the telomerase in the current era of treatment of human cancer.
