The paper concerns new immigrants (on the example of Polish-Chinese neighbourhood) but in two folklore phenomena: gossip and urban legend. The author demonstrates the process of formation the Polish-Chinese relationships resulting in – established in 2010 – economic cooperation between the city authorities and Chinese investors in the Silesian city of Jaworzno in Poland, where is located the Chinese largest Wholesale Center „Silesia Chinese Center” in the southern part of the country. The contact of such different cultures in the space of the city brought new urban legends and creates gossips, heroes of which were the Chinese people. Basing on her field research the author tries to answer the question of the source of these processes and their impact on the quality of Polish-Chinese relationships in the city.

The main task of the present paper is to rethink the very idea of community, in comparison with other terms that describe the human collectivity such as-people, society, population, free association, group, collective or aggregate. After analyzing three basic ways of thinking about community-the liberal one, communitarianist and the biopolitical paradigm, the author reconstructs the contemporary concepts of community, such as the “unavowable community” (Maurice Blanchot), “the inoperative community” (Jean-Luc Nancy), “community in question” (Jacques Derrida), “the coming community” (Giorgio Agamben), “a collective” (Bruno Latour), and communitas (Roberto Esposito). As the result of his analyzes the author infers the general conclusion, that what is at stake in philosophical discourse about communities is “conjuring up” or “designing” alternative ways of being, alternative ontologies of the social world.

The article is devoted to the discussion of selected results of the nationwide community police officers research conducted by the authors in January 2017. This research is a part of the ongoing project of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration „Community police officer closer to us”. The analysis was based on the answers provided by 5,400 respondents from all over the country to the following questions: Should the role of community police officers be to carry out social prevention tasks? Are community police officers satisfied with their job as community police officers? How do they assess their interpersonal communication skills? Do they think they have prestige in the local community? Do they participate in meetings with the local community and how do they characterize the police mission? The results will be processed in 17 reports from the national community police officers research. The application of conclusions from the results of qualitative and quantitative research conducted all over Poland in 17 garrisons will have a significant impact on the dialogue between the authorities and community police officers, determining the expectations of first contact officers, their problems, strengths and weaknesses. The research carried out will increase the effectiveness of the “Community police officer closer to us” programme, one of the basic programmes of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration implemented in order to build trust between the authorities and a citizen. The research also resulted in two monographs on the functioning of the district division in Poland. The authors’research focuses on the partnership of community police officers services with the local community for internal security, taking into account the role of community police officers social and educational activities, and on drawing a professional portrait of the community police officer who is closer to people, solves problems of local communities and carries out activities in the social and educational area.

During the significant period between late medieval times (15th century) and the end of early modern era (18th century) the oath was an important tool of communication not only between the town and its lord but also among the members of the municipal community itself. The whole community and its representatives had sworn to the Territorial Lord the oath of loyalty, submission and obedience. To swear an oath of loyalty to the community was an important part of initiation process for every new townsman. Generally we can say the oath was a kind of bond to the town structures. Also, it has been a tool frequently utilized within the judicial process. Besides, from the city scribe to the least servant in the city jail, whenever they were taking up their office, there was also an obligation to swear an oath to the city council and to the community. The course of study of the following paper is the oath of office in the sphere of food production, food distribution and utilization of sources  within late medieval and early modern Silesian and Moravian town communities (Wroclaw, Zlotorya, Opava, Olomouc and Swidnica with some additional oaths of office from Klodsko) and relevance of the oath as the source for research on urban structures of those times. The fact that the city, despite its inanimate nature, proves itself to behave like a living organism was noticed and mentioned by many scientists including biologists, sociologists and – of course – historians. Alike the living creatures, the town needs its sources for living and growing. And for the existence of urban structures, the issue of who could control these resources and how, is crucial. We can specify three substantial sources important for living within the walls of medieval and early modern town – water, wood and trade. Analysing each defined sphere we will try to demonstrate the aforementioned functions of the oath of office and the possibilities of its utilization as the historical source for observation of the food production and administration of the sources within the dynamically changing world of late medieval and early modern town.

W artykule przedstawię dwie funkcjonujące dzisiaj obok siebie diagnozy polskiej współczesności. Jedna to separatystyczna, podkreślająca rozłam, bez nadziei na zgodę wizja dwóch odmiennych, zwaśnionych plemion, różniących się stosunkiem do przeszłości i historii. Historia i pamięć są tutaj kryterium podziału. Druga wizja zakłada możliwość porozumienia się, wskazując na relacyjny, oparty na potrzebie uznania charakter obecnego konfliktu. Pamięć nie jest tutaj narzędziem podziału, ale dobrem i wartością wspólną, a szansą na porozumienie się są relacje uznania.
In the article, I present two currently co-functioning diagnoses of Polish modernity. One is separatist, emphasizing the division, without hope of consent – a vision of two conflicted tribes, differing in their attitude to the past and history. The second vision assumes the possibility of communication, pointing to the relational character of the current conflict, which is based on the need for recognition. Remembrance is not a dividing instrument here, but a common good and value, and the chance for communication is the relationship of recognition.

Henri J.M. Nouwen był wybitnym naukowcem. Dziedziną, która go najbardziej interesowała, była duchowość. W jej świetle przedstawia również duszpasterstwo. Jego krytyczne spojrzenie na duszpasterstwo, ale przede wszystkim cenne wskazówki, przeniknięte głęboką duchowością, z troską o człowieka, są aktualne także dzisiaj.

У статті автор робить спробу розглянути характер споглядальності міжнародної спільноти за депортаційними процесами українців з території етнічних земель у Польщі впродовж 1944-1946 рр. Реалізацію завдання автор виконує через архівну документалістику, яка певною мірою виправдовує об’ємні цитування. Нині тематика післявоєнного виселення для українців і поляків є неоднозначною, як у трактуванні так і політиці пам’яті. Депортація українців прикордоння є конфліктом історичної пам’яті обох народів: українці хочуть пам’ятати історію, яку поляки воліють забути. Про жахливі умови суспільної адаптації виселених з Польщі в УРСР довідуємось з епістолярію виселених, який надсилався ними за кордон в надії, що листи прочитають родичі. Однак вони були перехоплені Міністерством внутрішніх справ УРСР. Свідома частина місцевої інтелігенції регіону усвідомлювала пасивну позицію міжнародного політикуму та громадськості щодо невиправданого виселення українців-автохтонів, але щиро прагнула і очікувала її допомоги. Про це переконливо засвідчує аналіз Відкритого листа українців, які живуть за лінією Керзона під назвою «Всьому цивілізованому світу» написаного у жовтня 1945 р. Втративши надію на добровільне виселення цей лист був своєрідним рупором українців регіону до міжнародної спільноти, в очікуванні, що будуть почуті і підтримані. Автор робить висновок, що міжнародна спільнота не виправдала надій і сподівань українців, які опинилися у «війні після війни» втративши батьківські землі. Депортація 1944-1946 рр., місцевого населення з Лемківщини, стала найтрагічнішим етнополітичним експериментом СРСР та Польщі, який доводилося пережити лемкам в новітню добу.
In the article, the author attempts to consider the nature of contemplation of the international community on the deportation of Ukrainians from ethnic lands in Poland during 1944-1946. The author implements this task through archival documentation, which to some extent justifies extensive quotations. Today, the subject of post-war resettlement for Ukrainians and Poles is ambiguous, both in interpretation and in the politics of memory. The deportation of Ukrainians of the borderlands is a conflict of the historical memory of both peoples: Ukrainians want to remember the history which Poles prefer to forget. We learn about the terrible conditions of social adaptation of Polish deportees in the USSR from the epistolary of deportees, which they had been sending abroad in hope that relatives would read the letters. However, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR had been intercepting those letters. In this sense, a conscious part of the local intelligentsia of the region was aware of the passive position of international politicians and the public on the unjustified eviction of autochthonous Ukrainians, but sincerely sought and expected its help. The analysis of The Open Letter of Ukrainians living behind the Curzon line entitled “To the whole civilized world” written in October 1945 convincingly evidences it. Losing hope of voluntary eviction, this letter was a kind of mouthpiece of Ukrainians in the region to the international community, hoping to be heard and supported. The author concludes that the international community did not live up to the hopes and expectations of Ukrainians who found themselves in a “war after war” and gradually lost their native lands, where they were indigenous. The deportation of 1944-1946, the local population from Lemkovschina, became a tragic ethno-political experiment of the USSR and Poland, which Lemkos had to survive in modern times.

While establishing the lay ministry of the catechist, Pope Francis expressed his hope that, as was the case in Christian antiquity, the catechist—because of the tasks entrusted to him—would be simultaneously a witness of faith, a master and a mystagogue, a companion and an educator who teaches on behalf of the Church. The aim of this article is to highlight the mystagogical dimension of the education of catechists preparing to enter the ministry in parish communities, and to present the related directions of pastoral activities carried out in the Church of Katowice as part of the Archdiocesan Centre for Pastoral Formation. The main research problem concerns the nature of the formation of catechists serving in parish communities and their specific competences. The study uses the methods of analysis and synthesis. The analysis of catechetical documents, carried out in the light of chronologically (sequentially) complementary guidelines concerning catechists' formation enabled to distinguish the mystagogical elements of the theological-pastoral formation of catechists. The article emphasises the postulate expressed in the Catechetical Directory for the formation of catechists as “witnesses of faith and mystagogues” and the lay ministry of the catechist established by Pope Francis, as a possibility and necessity for the formation of two types of catechists that complement each other through their competences: the school catechist—a teacher of religious education, and the catechist who undertakes ministry in the parish community. Pastoral initiatives supporting the formation of parish catechists conducted in the Archdiocese of Katowice are presented as an example of catechetical-pastoral implementation of the postulated activities. They serve as an inspiration for activities in other formation centres.

The subject of this article is the analysis of one of own tasks, which aims to satisfy the needs of the local community by supporting and disseminating the self-government idea, including creating conditions for the operation and development of auxiliary units and implementation of programmes to stimulate civic activity. The subject matter has been presented on the basis of obligatory, quasi-obligatory and optional forms of satisfying collective needs of the community in the light of article 7 par. 1 point 17 of the Act on municipal self-government together with an indication of the role and significance of municipal bodies in the organizational and functional structure of the mechanisms presented, with the help of which the municipality’s own task is implemented. Discussing this task is important due to the fact that it is a form of implementation of the principle of subsidiarity and deconcentration in the self-government community.

The paper discusses new forms of social collaboration that have been actively developing in cities for a number of years now. The text analyses the form of social interactions that the author has defined as a community institution. Applying this cognitive category to a reflection on a specific example – a food cooperative – made it possible to capture the characteristic features of a community self-organisation mechanism. Discovering the institutional aspects of the discussed phenomenon made it possible to observe that community collaboration involves an educational process of constructing the common good and consequently – a major potential of pedagogical impact and significant impact on local public policies.

This is an original attempt to answer the question of why the community of Polish historians needs general assemblies. In this context, the author presents the new formula and the program of the XX General Assembly of Polish Historians, convened to Lublin by the Polish Historical Society for September 18–20, 2019, marking the 450th anniversary of The Union of Lublin and the 30th anniversary of the Autumn of Nations that resulted in a peaceful dismantling of the post-Yalta system in Europe.
Jest to autorska próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, po co środowisku polskich historyków potrzebne są zjazdy powszechne? W tym kontekście prezentowane są nowa formuła i program XX Powszechnego Zjazdu Historyków Polskich, zwołanego do Lublina przez Polskie Towarzystwo Historyczne na 18-20 września 2019 r., w 450-rocznicę Unii Lubelskiej i w 30-lecie ‘Jesieni Narodów’, czyli pokojowego rozmontowania systemu ‘Europy Pojałtańskiej’.

The forms of economic pressure of the Soviet state on clergy and religious communities as part of the Bolshevik famine strategy were analysed. Methodologically, the study is based on the principles of historism, objectivity, systematicity, as well as general scientific and historical methods. During the period of aggravation in social relations, provoked by the introduction of collectivization, the church and clergy were stigmatized by the Soviet authorities as class enemies and supporters of kurkuls. In 1932-1933, the economic pressure on the clergy became one of the tools for their liquidation «as a class». The article uncovers the forms of this economic pressure on the clergy and the church. It was found that the tax burden on the clergy was disproportional to their income, economically unreasonable and politically motivated. Representatives of all ranks suffered from the famine in the Ukrainian SSR. Financial situation of clerics of different denominations got significantly worse during 1932-1933.

This article attempts to examine and define the functions and character of the periodicals and other press publications of Polish Eastern Borderlands community functioning in the structures of the Polish war refugees and post-war political emigration in the West. The author presents the origins and the various phases of its history, including the phase of its inexorable decline. In a series of concise individual profiles the article covers all printed materials that can be classified as the press publications of the Polish Eastern Borderlands community.
Przedmiotem artykułu jest próba zdefiniowania, określenia funkcji oraz charakterystyka czasopiśmiennictwa środowisk kresowych działających w strukturach wojennego uchodźstwa oraz powojennej emigracji politycznej na Zachodzie. Autor przedstawia genezę, poszczególne fazy rozwoju oraz okres schyłkowy tego czasopiśmiennictwa, przybliżając w syntetyczny sposób wszystkie tytuły prasowe, które mogą być zaliczone do kategorii czasopism kresowych.
