Opis:
In this paper, a novel bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA) based approach for robust and optimal design of PID controller connected to power system stabilizer (PSS) is proposed for damping low frequency power oscillations of a single machine infinite bus bar (SMIB) power system. This paper attempts to optimize three parameters (Kp, Ki, Kd) of PID-PSS based on foraging behaviour of Escherichia coli bacteria in human intestine. The problem of robustly selecting the parameters of the power system stabilizer is converted to an optimization problem which is solved by a bacterial foraging algorithm with a carefully selected objective function. The eigenvalue analysis and the simulation results obtained for internal and external disturbances for a wide range of operating conditions show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed BFAPSS. Further, the time domain simulation results when compared with those obtained using conventional PSS and Genetic Algorithm (GA) based PSS show the superiority of the proposed design.

The high content of nitrates in drinking water leads to serious diseases. The creation of biofiltering devices with the longest time of their operation between preventive flushes is extremely important. The purpose of this study was to investigate the features of the functioning of the developed U-shaped submersible denitrifying biofilter during its long-term operation in the piston filtration mode. The denitrification of water by using the method of displacement (piston) biofiltration in a submersible small U-shaped biofilter with immovable carriers of attached microflora in its filter load was studied. As a result, clogging of the pore space of the biofilter in the zone of excess bacterial nutrition is prevented and the vital activity of bacteria is maintained in places where there is no nutrient substrate. It has been shown that, due to adaptive mechanisms, denitrifying bacteria convert nitrate ions into gaseous nitrogen, consuming extracellular polymeric substances. The rate constants of the reaction of reduction of nitrates to molecular nitrogen in different zones of the biofilter under different filtration modes were determined. The activity of the microflora inside the biofilter quickly returns to its original level when a full-fledged external nutrition is resumed. The efficiency of nitrate to nitrogen conversion in the studied biofilter is 94.2±8.9%.

Opis:
During its entire utilisation history - lasting several hundred years - the area of the Tatra Mountains underwent multidirectional anthropopressure. As the result, all components of their natural environment have been transformed, including relief and water conditions. The analysis of the literature on this topie conducted by the author, as well as his observations performed in the area, confirmed the assumption that transformations caused by human actions developed with varying intensity and admitted various forms depending on the area of action and the magnitude of means applied. The transformation scalę presented here estimates the influence of anthropopressure on the stability of the catchment area systems of larger Tatra streams, partial catchment areas of their confluents and selected slope surfaces. In systems, where the limits of persistence were not exceeded, stability was ensured by natural processes compensating for the conseąuences of anthropopressure. In systems where stability was disturbed, planned preventive measures are necessary.

Opis:
Fast-valving assists in maintaining system stability following a severe transmission system fault by reducing the turbine mechanical power. Fast-valving consists in rapid closing and opening of steam valves in an adequate manner to reduce the generator accelerating power following the recognition of a severe fault. FV can be an effective and economical method of meeting the performance requirements of a power system in the presence of an increase in wind and solar generation in the power system, newly connected large thermal units and delaying of building new transmission lines. The principle of fast-valving and advantages of applying this technique in large steam turbine units was presented in the paper. Effectiveness of fast-valving in enhancing the stability of the Polish Power Grid was analyzed. The feasibility study of fast-valving application in the 560 MW unit in Kozienice Power Station (EW SA) was discussed.

Opis:
The stability of rotating systems in turbomachinery has to account for the structure design, the actual geometry of bearings and all of the remaining forces, including operational data as well as temperature of the bearing lubricating oil. Thus, a study of the dynamic stability of rotating machines is complex and time consuming in terms of modelling and calculations. Even though it is recognized that other methods of analysis and acceptance criteria have been used to evaluate stability, API standardization procedures ensure appropriate notification and participation in the development process. According to these procedures, firstly we prepare a rotor technical documentation based on geometry measurements, frequently with optical scanning. Secondly, a theoretical analysis consisting of calculations with the finite element method based on the program that allows us to build a numerical model of rotor dynamics, is carried out. Then, the so-called “bump test” is performed to measure natural frequencies of a freely suspended rotor, which makes it possible to “tune” the theoretical model, making it compatible with the real object not only in terms of geometric dimensions and mass, but also from the point of view of the form and frequency of free vibrations. Thus, we obtain an experimentally verified numerical model which can be used for future machine diagnostics and other needs.

Opis:
Synchronous generators are usually eguipped with power system stabilizers (PSS) to damp low-freguency oscillations. Among the various types of PSS, it has recently been demonstrated that the Multi-Band PSS (MB-PSS) has a better performance to handle all global, inter-area and local modes. However, the performance of this PSS may degrade since the power supply system is intrinsically non-linear and its operating conditions freguently change. This paper introduces a new design of MB-PSS based on Mamdani Fuzzy inference (Fuzzy-MB-PSS). Compared to the IEEE standard MB-PSS, the proposed stabilizer is more efficient owing to its ability to deal with oscillations at different operating points. The controller is tested on a power system benchmark under various disturbance conditions to prove its robustness and to demonstrate its superiority over conventional PSS and MB-PSS.

The wind power which has been expected to be a promising alternative energy source can bring new challenges when it is connected to the power grid due to the fluctuation nature of the wind and the comparatively new types of its generators. This paper illustrates a possible solution to mitigate these integration issues of the wind power by application of the energy storage to the wind farm in power systems focusing on its short-duration perspective. The simulation model for the Energy Storage System (ESS) connected to the wind farm is implemented using the Power System Simulator for Engineering(PSS/E) which is one of the most widely used program for the power system analysis in US. Employing a sample power system, the control effect of the ESS for mitigating the wind generation related power quality issues by suppressing the power flow fluctuation of the wind farm, and improving power system stability is validated. The counteracting effect of the ESS in the wind farm to the disturbance on the grid is also shown.

The paper presents a simple mathematical model called a coupled map lattice (CML). For some range of its parameters, this model generates complex, spatiotemporal behavior which seems to be chaotic. The main purpose of the paper is to provide results of stability analysis and compare them with those obtained from numerical simulation. The indirect Lyapunov method and Lyapunov exponents are used to examine the dependence on initial conditions. The net direction phase is introduced to measure the symmetry of the system state trajectory. In addition, a real system, which can be modeled by the CML, is presented. In general, this article describes basic elements of environment, which can be used for creating and examining methods of chaos controlling in systems with spatiotemporal dynamics.

The paper presents results of examination of control algorithms for the purpose of controlling chaos in spatially distributed systems like the coupled map lattice (CML). The mathematical definition of the CML, stability analysis as well as some basic results of numerical simulation exposing complex, spatiotemporal and chaotic behavior of the CML were already presented in another paper. The main purpose of this article is to compare the efficiency of controlling chaos by simple classical algorithms in spatially distributed systems like CMLs. This comparison is made based on qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods proposed in the previous paper such as the indirect Lyapunov method, Lyapunov exponents and the net direction phase indicator. As a summary of this paper, some conclusions which can be useful for creating a more efficient algorithm of controlling chaos in spatially distributed systems are made.

The paper is devoted to the problem of robust stability of positive linear discrete-time systems with delays in the case of structured perturbations of state matrices. Simple new necessary and sufficient conditions for robust stability in the general case and in the case of system with linear uncertainty structure are established for two sub-cases: 1) unity rank uncertainty structure, 2) non-negative perturbation matrices. It is shown that robust stability of the positive discrete-time linear system with delays is equivalent to: 1) robust stability of the corresponding positive system without delays of the same order as time-delay system - in the general case, 2) asymptotic stability of finite family of the positive vertex systems without delays - in the case of a linear unity rank uncertainty structure, 3) asymptotic stability of only one positive vertex system without delays - in the case of a linear uncertainty structure with non-negative perturbation matrices.

Opis:
This paper presents a microelectronic emulation approach for high-speed power system computation. First, the problems of existing power system simulators are detailed. This shows that microelectronic emulation is a possible solution for solving the speed problems of existing simulators. Second, this paper presents one specific emulation approach, the so-called AC emulation approach. The ultimate objective of the AC emulation approach is the realization of a power system emulator which reproduces simultaneously a large number of phenomena of different time constants or frequencies with a much higher speed than real time. Frequency dependence of the elements is preserved and the signals propagating in the emulated network are the shrunk or downscaled current and voltage waves of the real power network. The models of the power network components are detailed. Special attention is paid to the generator model which was shown to introduce a systematic error. This systematic error is quantified, analyzed and optimized. Moreover behavioral simulation results confirm the feasibility of this approach which in turn lays the foundation for such an emulator.
