Opis:
Chalcopyrite $(CuFeS_2)$ and pyrite $(FeS_2)$ are commonly associated with each other, and they both belong to semiconductor minerals. The difference in crystal and electronic structures is an important factor for their flotation separation. Using the density functional method (DFT) combined with Hubbard U correction, their crystal and electronic properties are comparatively studied. The calculated results suggest that the use of antiferromagnetic calculations and Hubbard U correction are very important to the accuracy of the chalcopyrite results. Antiferromagnetic calculations combined with a U value of 2.0 eV on chalcopyrite show a band gap of 0.53 eV, which is very consistent with the experimental results of ~0.5 eV. The density of states (DOS) and Mulliken bond population results indicate that stronger hybridization between Fe 3d and S 3p states in chalcopyrite than in pyrite leads to a stronger covalency of Fe-S bonds in chalcopyrite, causing a reduction in the spin magnetic moment (3.5 μB) from the ideal value. In addition, the greater covalency of bonds in chalcopyrite results in greater hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite than pyrite. The DOS results suggest that S has similar electronic properties in pyrite and chalcopyrite. The oxidation states of Fe and Cu ions in chalcopyrite are discussed based on the coordination field theory according to the calculation results, which confirms an oxidation state of $Fe^{3+}Cu^{1+}S_2$.

This is a spin-off paper to [3, 4] in which we carried out an extensive analysis of Andrzej Grzegorczyk’s point-free topology from [5]. In [1] Loredana Biacino and Giangiacomo Gerla presented an axiomatization which was inspired by the Grzegorczyk’s system, and which is its variation. Our aim is to compare the two approaches and show that they are slightly different. Except for pointing to dissimilarities, we also demonstrate that the theories coincide (in the sense that their axioms are satisfied in the same class of structures) in presence of axiom stipulating non-existence of atoms.

In the paper has been discussed influence of stresses on general corrosion rate and corrosion pit nucleation rate and growth , whose presence has been questioned by some authors but accepted by most of them. Influence of roughness of pit walls on fatigue life of a plate suffering pit corrosion and presence of the so called „ non-damaging” pits which never lead to initiation of fatigue crack, has been presented. Possibility of prediction of pit-to-crack transition moment by two different ways, i.e. considering a pit a stress concentrator or an equivalent crack, has been analyzed. Also, influence of statistical distribution of depth of corrosion pits as well as anticorrosion protection on fatigue and corrosion fatigue has been described.

Opis:
Steel structures designed according to Eurocode 3 are executed in accordance with the provisions of the standard PN-EN 1090-2, which is referred to in Eurocode 3. In addition, the standard PN-EN 1090-2 refers to in its content a number of welding standards, e.g. PN-EN ISO 9692-1. These standards provide guidelines for welded connections, which should be applied in the case of joints connecting steel hollow sections. Analysis of above-mentioned provisions revealed that for fillet welds they are simultaneously fulfilled only if the inclination angles of the elements are in the range of 70°-100°. According to recommendations of PN-EN 1993-1-8 and EN 1090-2, the same weld type around the perimeter of the element connected to the chord of lattice structure is possible to execute only for inclination angle lower than 60°. Discrepancies between these standards also exist with regard to the interpretation of the dimension of the flare groove welds in connections of rectangular hollow sections with the same width. In addition, analyses of the recommendations for welding in cold-formed zones indicate that, for steel grades currently used for the production of cold-formed rectangular hollow sections, welding in these zones is not permitted only for profiles with wall thickness equal to 12.5 and 16 mm. The above-mentioned issues point out the need for mutual unification of standards for the design and execution of steel joints in hollow sections.

Opis:
The hollow section welded joints require a number of actions before starting welding and appropriate supervision during this operation to achieve joints with adequate quality level, which should be confirmed by the post-completion tests. The execution of hollow section joints is associated not only with welding, but also with cutting and additional machining of edges. In some cases, weld surfacing is also applied to correct sections fit-up. Weld surfacing and thermal cutting can cause local hardening of connected elements. The welding has to be preceded by an assessment of the previous technological processes. The welded joints can be only executed on the basis of detailed Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS). It is advisable to manufacture - in accordance with previously prepared WPS - pre-production joints for testing, proving the ability of the welding personnel to execute welded joints with specified quality, using the available equipment. The quality of welded joints is proved by testing. A type of conducted tests, thus scope and type of welding defects possible to detect, depends on the weld type, wall thickness of connected elements and joint geometry. The authors’ experience indicates that the proper execution of the welded joint of hollow sections is difficult task, which often requires pre-production quality testing of the joints.

The purpose of the work presented was to evaluate the capabilities of digital radiography to detect cracks in the internal structure of MiG-29 vertical stabilizers. The test object was a stabilizer previously subjected to fatigue testing and partially torn down for the needs of visual inspection. An inspection of three regions containing cracked parts was performed, with use of a pulsed x-ray generator and digital detector array. The results confirmed the method could be used to detect cracks in an internal structure which could not be inspected with other methods without affecting the stabilizer’s integrity.

Opis:
North-Central Sicily represents an Apenninic-Maghrebian Chain sector, deriving from the Miocene- Pliocene deformation of different palaeogeographic domains-derived successions (carbonate platforms and pelagic basins), piled-up in ramp-flat and duplex style, and belonging during the Mesozoic-Tertiary to the Northern African Continental Margin. These domains are represented by outcropping basinal sedimentary successions (Imerese-Sicanian Basin), geometrically interposed between carbonate platform rock bodies: the Panormide (innermost) and the Hyblean-Pelagian Domains (more external). In this paper, using stratigraphic and structural data, we propose a new palaeogeographic model, in which the main differences from previous interpretations consist in the position of the Imerese Basin, here identified as the juncture between the Panormide Domain and the Sicanian Basin Auct., and the position of the Trapanese pelagic carbonate platform, considered as the juncture between the Hyblean-Pelagian Domain and the Sicanian Basin Auct. Tectono-sedimentary steps characterising the evolution of the Sicilian Miocene-Pliocene Foredeep illustrate the deformational history of the area. Two geological cross-sections depict the structural architecture of the tectonic edifice, characterised by different thrust sheets piled-up during the Miocene-Pleistocene time. The more external tectonic units are formed by elements deriving from the Plio-Pleistocene deformation of the northern margin of the Hyblean-Pelagian Domain. The "intermediate" tectonic units derive from the Miocene-Pliocene deformation of the Imerese- Sicanian Domain and the inner tectonic units are constituted by Panormide and Sicilide Domains-derived successions, deformed during the Miocene. A mostly neotectonics-related transcurrent faults reoriented the previous thrust sheets through NW-SE and W-E trending faults, producing large-scale positive flower structures which involved the geometrically deepest Hyblean-Pelagian substrate.

The paper presents the methods of obtaining photovoltaic structures based on CdXHg1-XTe graded-band-gap epitaxial layers. Barriers in these structures were formed by solid phase doping of the material with low-diffusing impurities (As). High-temperature diffusion of acceptor impurity (As) in intrinsically defective material of n-type conductivity as well as ion introducing the donor impurity (B) in uniformly doped during the epitaxy process material of p-type of conductivity have been used. The possibility of creating multi-element graded-band-gap photovoltaic structures suitable for broad band detection of infrared radiation as a result of epitaxial growth by evaporation-condensation-diffusion method has been demonstrated.

Opis:
The aim of the paper was presentation and comparison of numerical methods applied in thin-walled structures analysis, with special attention paid to possibility of usage the Finite Element Method (FEM), especially in nonlinear analysis. There were presented basic differences between classical approach to modelling and analyzing thin-walled structures, and these performed with FEM methods using. The biggest emphasis was placed on the analysis of semimonocoąues, in which the loss in the shell 's stability is possible in the range of operational load activity. According to this, many nonlinear terms like global and local buckling, contact problems, significant deformations and shifts, are present. Worth emphasizing is the fact, that tension field, is something that was described long time ago. First paper s about this phenomenon were published in the last century. Although it is a common effect that takes place in semimonocoques, there are not many publications that analyze and examine this phenomenon. In this paper, an analysis of two-sided, thin-walled spar, which has undergone the flexion by the shearing force in the plane of the panel, was presented. The spar was designed as a classic semimonocoque, in which load transmission function is separated. It was assumed that, for the sake of small thickness, shell elements transmit mainly tangential loads, normal loads, when normal loads are transmitted by framework elements. Riveted joints are used to join elements of framework and shell. There are presented and compared results of analysis for models with various complexities. Firstly, results of analysis of classical model of semimonocoques were presented. It means that framework elements were modelled as rod elements transmitted only normal loads, but shell elements were modelled as disc semimonocoque elements, in this case transmitted only tangential loads. Area of section of rod elements was adequately increased, in order to consideration mating width, coming from partial transmission of normal loads by the shell elements. Results obtained for intermediate models were also presented, as well as for complex shell model, which allows on advanced nonlinear analysis of tension field, which consider contact between framework and shell elements. Applications of formulated models to thin-walled structure, especially aircraft ones and further possibilities of presented method of analysis were discussed.

This paper discusses a list of information and issues that causes of structural failure of buildings. Structural failure begins to occur when the material is stressed to its upper strength limit causing to rupture or extreme deformations. The ultimate strength of the material or the system is the limit of the load bearing capacity. On reaching this limit, the construction materials could already been damaged, and their load carrying capacity is suddenly decreased permanently. If the system is properly designed, a local collapse should normally not be a cause of instant or gradual failure of the complete building. The ultimate failure strength of the construction elements should be carefully considered in the design of structures to prevent failure.
