Opis:
Current power grid and market development, characterized by large growth of distributed energy sources in recent years, especially in Europa, are according energy storage systems an increasingly larger field of implementation. Existing storage technologies, e.g. pumped-storage power plants, have to be upgraded and extended by new but not yet commercially viable technologies (e.g. batteries or adiabatic compressed air energy storage) that meet expected demands. Optimal sizing of storage systems and technically and economically optimal operating strategies are the major challenges to the integration of such systems in the future smart grid. This paper surveys firstly the literature on the latest niche applications. Then, potential new use case and operating scenarios for energy storage systems in smart grids, which have been field tested, are presented and discussed and subsequently assessed technically and economically.

Shale gas is natural gas produced from shale, a type of sedimentary rock. Shale gas has become an increasingly important source of natural gas in the United States over the past decade, and interest has spread to potential gas shales in Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia. One analyst expects shale gas to supply as much as half the natural gas production in North America by 2020. As of 2010, Poland imports two-thirds of its natural gas from Russia. ConocoPhillips has announced plans to explore for shale gas in Poland, along with Lane energy. The recently made available US Department of Energy report revealed that the largest reserves of shale gas in Europe are in Poland. The authors of the report calculate that Poland has reserves of about 22.45 trillion cubic meters of shale gas, of which 5.30 trillion cubic meters is immediately available for extracting. The most common method of shale gas recovery is hydraulic fracturing - the propagation of fractures in a rock layer caused by the presence of a pressurized fluid. Hydraulic fractures form naturally, as in the case of veins or dikes, and is one means by which gas and petroleum from source rocks may migrate to reservoir rocks. This process is used to release petroleum, natural gas (including shale gas, tight gas and coal seam gas), or other substances for extraction, via a technique called induced hydraulic fracturing. The method is critically assessed by ecologists. The paper deals with new method of gas shale fracturing and gas recovery coupled with carbon dioxide storage. It allows to effectively mine the shale gas and to store carbon dioxide in shale rock. It must be noticed that CO2 pollution is a very important problem in Poland, because of European Union CO2 limits. Also the numerical calculation of carbon dioxide thermodynamical process of decompression process, which simulates the injection of the cold liquid gas into the shale formation (high temperature and pressure conditions) and its influence on shale rock fracturing will be presented.

This paper proposes four different cost-effective configurations of a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) in an electric city bus. A comparison is presented between a battery powered bus (battery bus) and supercapacitor powered bus in two configurations in terms of initial and operational costs. The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery type was used in the battery bus and three of the hybrids. In the first hybrid the battery module was the same size as in the battery bus, in the second it was half the size and in the third it was one third the size. The fourth hybrid used a lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) battery type with the same energy as the LFP battery module in the battery bus. The model of LFP battery degradation is used in the calculation of its lifetime range and operational costs. For the NMC battery and supercapacitor, the manufacturers’ data have been adopted. The results show that it is profitable to use HESS in an electric city bus from both the producer and consumer point of view. The reduction of battery size and added supercapacitor module generates up to a 36% reduction of the initial energy storage system (ESS) price and up to a 29% reduction of operational costs when compared to the battery ESS. By using an NMC battery type in HESS, it is possible to reduce operational costs by up to 50% compared to an LFP battery ESS.

Electricity storage devices can be divided into indirect storage technology devices (involving electricity conversion into another form of energy), and direct storage (in an electric or magnetic fi eld). Electricity storage technologies include: pumped-storage power plants, BES Battery Energy Storage, CAES Compressed Air Energy Storage, Supercapacitors, FES Flywheel Energy Storage, SMES Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage, FC Fuel Cells reverse or operated in systems with electrolysers and hydrogen storage. These technologies have diff erent technical characteristics and economic parameters that determine their usability. This paper presents two concepts of an electricity storage tank with a storage capacity of at least 50 MWh, using the BES battery energy storage and CAES compressed air energy storage technologies.
Urządzenia umożliwiające magazynowanie energii elektrycznej dzielimy na: urządzenia technologii magazynowania pośredniego (z udziałem konwersji energii elektrycznej na inny rodzaj energii) i magazynowania bezpośredniego (w polu elektrycznym lub magnetycznym). Do technologii umożliwiających magazynowanie energii elektrycznej należą: elektrownie wodne pompowe; akumulatory (BES – ang. Battery Energy Storage); pneumatyczne zasobniki energii (CAES – ang. Compressed Air Energy Storage); superkondensatory (ang. Supercapacitors); kinetyczne zasobniki energii (FES – ang. Flywheel Energy Storage); nadprzewodzące zasobniki energii (SMES – ang. Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage); ogniwa paliwowe (FC – ang. Fuel Cells) rewersyjne lub pracujące w układach z elektrolizerami i magazynowaniem wodoru. The possibility of using CO2 to fracturing a shale rock has been presented in the paper. The described innovative method which allows for the efficient extraction of shale gas and carbon dioxide storage in a shale rock was developed in Department of Mechanics and Applied Computer Science at the Military University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland. Firstly, the method was verified on the base of analytical and experimental research. In the next stage of the method verification carbon dioxide thermodynamic behavior was studied. The growth in pressure of drop of CO2 heated in a closed volume was numerically tested. The research confirmed the efficiency of the use of carbon dioxide as a medium for fracturing of rocks. The usage of liquid CO2 can be alternative for hydraulic fracturing and is safe for the environment.

With the rapid growth of electric vehicles (EVs) in recent years, the research on their energy storage systems (ESSs) has also shown great popularity. A traditional ESS normally has a fixed configuration and uses a single type of energy storage unit. However, this traditional design has some limitations, such as low flexibility and high requirements to unit consistency. To solve these problems, a new hybrid energy storage system is proposed in this paper. The proposed ESS hybridises multiple lithium-ion battery modules and one supercapacitor module. By controlling the states of switches inside the ESS topology, module level reconfiguration can be achieved. Further, a DC/DC converter is also included in the ESS topology, which is connected to the supercapacitor module and can be used to ensure correct ESS output voltage. Reconfiguration and active balancing algorithms are also given based on the proposed ESS topology. Situations with and without bypassing the lithium-ion battery modules are both discussed in the algorithms. The proposed hybrid ESS is finally verified with simulations. The system model is built in the Simulink/MATLAB environment. Simulation results show that the lithium-ion modules with a lower state of charge values have higher priorities to be connected in parallel. Reconfiguration actions are able to balance all lithium-ion battery modules within one Worldwide Harmonised Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (WLTC) simulation cycle while maintaining ESS output voltage within a correct range. Furthermore, the proposed hybrid ESS control algorithms remain valid when one lithium-ion battery module is manually bypassed during simulation.

Solar collectors and photovoltaic panels are devices widely used for heating water for both heating and domestic purposes. Due to the variable nature of solar radiation, it is advisable to include in solar energy-based systems thermal storages that accumulate energy at times of overproduction and discharge it at times of demand. In this paper, we present the results of simulation research to compare the possibility of two different charging systems for a 24000 m3 seasonal pit thermal energy storage (PTES). The first uses electricity generated by photovoltaic panels and converted to heat in an electrode boiler to charge the heat store. The second is utilising a solar collector for this purpose. Based on the simulation calculations carried out in TRNSYS 18, it can be concluded that, from an investment perspective, a system based on solar collectors is more cost-effective. In addition, the installation takes up less space compared to a photovoltaic panel farm.

Modern electronics systems consist of not only with the power electronics converters, but also with the friendly user interface which allow you to read the operating parameters and change them. The simplest solution of the user interface is to use alphanumeric display which displays information about the state of the converter. With a few additional buttons you can change the settings. This solution is simple, inexpensive but allows only local control (within walking distance from the system) and the number of displayed information is low. You can create extensive menu, but it causes problems with access to information. This paper presents the example of a rotating energy storage universal solution which is lack of the above mentioned disadvantages.

Cloud computing is a growing field since data storage is becoming ever more decentralized. Providers of Cloud solutions want to insure the safety and availability of their customers’ data. In order to increase these performance indices, several storage policies have been implemented: replication, erasure codes, etc. A few of them rely on randomized procedures. In this paper, we focus on the influence of a specific storage policy on the availability of a given file. Taking only disk failures into account, we provide a general formula for the average file unavailability U ̅, which is a generalization of the well-known k-out-of-n problem, to which it reduces when disks are identical. We then calculate U ̅ for several configurations when disks have different reliabilities, and show that the disk arrangement has a major impact on the result. We also provide an approximation which could be helpful for more complex arrangements.

Opis:
The Voltage flicker, a phenomenon of annoying light intensity fluctuation, caused by rapid change in industrial and domestic load such as Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), rolling mills, welding equipments and pumps operating periodically has been a major concern for supply utilities, electricity regulatory agencies and customers. Static Voltage Compensators (SVC's) and Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOM) have been able to solve the voltage flicker problem by rapidly controlling the reactive power. But, the control of active power along with reactive power control helps to mitigate the voltage flicker problem more effectively. In this paper, voltage flicker mitigation of EAF with STATCOM along with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is presented and performance results of the system using PSCAD/EMTDC software are analyzed.

The electricity is a basic need for functioning of modern society. In the deregulated electricity market, delivering quality power to the clients is a challenge for the utilities. In this paper, a "hybrid grid" is discussed that consists of centralized generations and localized distributed generations which may be comprised of small-scale conventional and sustainable sources. Energy storage option is also integrated in the hybrid-grid. Simulations are done on a test network, using "Power-Factory" software. It was found from the analysis that voltage quality and power supply availability of a hybrid-grid can be improved by proper selection of energy storage system along with protective and control devices.

This paper proposes an electromechanical transient method to build a battery energy storage system-based virtual synchronous generator model, suitable for a large-scale grid. This model consists of virtual synchronous generator control, system limitation and the model interface. The equations of a second-order synchronous machine, the characteristics of charging/discharging power, state of charge, operating efficiency, dead band and inverter limits are also considered. By equipping the energy storage converter into an approximate synchronous voltage source with an excitation system and speed regulation system, the necessary inertia and damping characteristics are provided for the renewable energy power system with low inertia and weak damping. Based on the node current injection method by the power system analysis software package (PSASP), the control model is built to study the influence of different energy storage systems. A study on the impact of renewable energy unit fluctuation on frequency and the active power of the IEEE 4-machine 2-area system is selected for simulation verification. Through reasonable control and flexible allocation of energy storage plants, a stable and friendly frequency environment can be created for power systems with high-penetration renewable energy.

Opis:
This paper highlights the storage charging and discharging issue. The study objective is to manage the energy inputs and outputs of the principal grid at the same time in order to maximize profit while decreasing costs, as well as to ensure the availability of energy according to demand and the decisions to either save or search for energy. A fuzzy logic control model is applied in MATLAB Simulink to deal with the system’s uncertainties in scheduling the storage battery technology and the charging- discharging. The results proved that the fuzzy logic model has the potential to efficiently lower fluctuations and prolong the lifecycle.
