In this work, the static inertial-elastic instability of rotating nano disks is investigated with the centrifugal force formulation considering the radial displacement. Thus, Brunelle’s previous local solution is generalized by using Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory. The variations of critical rotation speeds with the nonlocal scale parameter are illustrated under different boundary conditions. It is seen that the critical rotation speeds decrease as the nonlocal scale parameters increase for all cases. Also, it is remarkable that the presented results are affected significantly from the boundary conditions.

This study uses TruckSim™ to model disc brakes and drum brakes on a fully loaded truck semi-trailer to study the performance of each brake type as downgrades and speeds vary. The brake performance is measured based on braking distance. A simplified economic comparison based on life cycle cost analysis to determine which road and vehicle conditions give rise to the cost-effectiveness of disc brakes is performed. The studies suggest that disc brakes shorten braking distances by 10-20%. They also suggest that the percentage reduction in braking distance as speed increases and downgrade gets steeper is approximately 12-19%. Evidence is provided that trucking companies operating their vehicles in steep terrain and at high speeds with disc brakes could benefit from 12-80% in long-term cost savings. Finally, at the societal level, by preventing crashes arising from rear-end collisions and runaway truck incidents, disc brakes save at least $649 million annually.

Opis:
Marine propulsion shafting systems are exposed to torsional vibrations originating from excitations in their prime movers and propellers. It is essential to analyse their steady state response in the earliest stage of ship design. The paper describes the implementation of SimulationX software based upon simulation modelling for these calculations. This software can be used either by the design office of the shipyard or by the classification society for verification within the plan approval phase. Some specifics of the input data preparation are briefly discussed. In addition, the simulation results depend on the modelling approach chosen. For these reasons, the real two-stroke Diesel engine ship propulsion system was chosen and several different models were implemented for system modelling. SimulationX calculation results are compared with those of two well-known and field-proven programs that use an analytical approach. Finally, the results are compared with the measurements performed on the actual newly built ship. Discussion reviews the selected SimulationX model, and its verification and validation in the case of engine cylinders with normal ignition.

In order to study the dynamics of vertical crustal movements it was processed database with 196 stations according to the results of GNSS-observations on the permanent stations. Based on the continuous series of observations we determined the changes of absolute and regional velocity of vertical crustal movements, their spatial distribution and relationship with the tectonic structure of the region. We made the maps of regional rates of vertical crustal movements in the period since 2000-2011. It was also investigated seismic activity in Europe during this period. The accumulated research results indicate the necessity for systematic studies of the impact of various geophysical factors on the stability and permanent displacement of plants and their relation to seismic activity.
W celu zbadania dynamiki pionowych ruchów skorupy ziemskiej przetworzono wyniki obserwacji GNSS z 196 stacji permanentnych. Na podstawie ciągłej serii obserwacji stwierdzono zmiany absolutnej i regionalnych prędkości pionowych ruchów skorupy ziemskiej, analizowano ich rozmieszczenie przestrzenne i zależność od tektonicznej struktury regionu. Wykonano mapy rozkładu regionalnych pionowych ruchów skorupy ziemskiej w latach 2000-2011. Badano również aktywność sejsmiczną w Europie w tym okresie. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują na konieczność systematycznych badań wpływu różnych czynników geograficznych na stabilność kontynentu oraz potwierdzają związek między stałym przemieszczaniem się roślin a aktywnością sejsmiczną.

Opis:
Production of near net shape thin strips using vertical twin roll casting method has been studied. In a typical VTRC process, the simultaneous action of solidification and rolling makes the process quite attractive as well as complicated. An industrially popular alloy A356 has been chosen for the VTRC processing. It is challenging to identify VTRC processing parameters for the alloy to produce thin strips because of its freezing range and complex composition. In the present work processing parameters of VTRC like roll speed, roll gap, melt superheat and the interface convective heat transfer coefficient have been investigated through modelling of the process. The mathematical model was developed which simultaneously solves the heat transfer, fluid flow and solidification, using commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics 5.4. VTRC sheets of alloy A356 were produced in an experimental set up and attempts were made to correlate the microstructures of VTRC A356 alloy to that predicted from the numerical studies to validate the model.
