Opis:
Zinc pollution in wastewater is a global problem because it is highly toxic. Zinc is commonly used in industries that transfer the water containing zinc directly into water sources, leading to pollution. Exposure to a high level of zinc causes major health problems. This study evaluated the adsorption of zinc ions from aqueous system using modified biopolymers of chitosan by crosslinking with sulphates using the batch adsorption method; the concentration was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The sulphate cross-linked chitosan (SCC) was characterised by several method. The effects of various experimental parameters such as pH, contact time, concentration, adsorbent dosage and temperature were investigated. Under the optimised conditions, the percentage efficiency for the removal of zinc(II) was up to 85%. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms were used to analyse the equilibrium adsorption data along with kinetic studies. Various thermodynamic parameters have also been reported.

Opis:
Kinetics of the reaction of peroxynitrite with ferric cytochrome c in the absence and presence of bicarbonate was studied. It was found that the heme iron in ferric cytochrome c does not react directly with peroxynitrite. The rates of the absorbance changes in the Soret region of cytochrome c spectrum caused by peroxynitrite or peroxynitrite/bicarbonate were the same as the rate of spontaneous isomerization of peroxynitrite or as the rate of the reaction of peroxynitrite with bicarbonate, respectively. This means that intermediate products of peroxynitrite decomposition, ·OH/·NO2 or, in the presence of bicarbonate, CO3-·/·NO2, are the species responsible for the absorbance changes in the Soret band of cytochrome c. Modifications of the heme center of cytochrome c by radiolytically produced radicals, ·OH, ·NO2 or CO3-·, were also studied. The absorbance changes in the Soret band caused by radiolytically produced ·OH or CO3-· were much more significant that those observed after peroxynitrite treatment, compared under similar concentrations of radicals. ·NO2 produced radiolytically did not interact with the heme center of cytochrome c. Cytochrome c exhibited an increased peroxidase-like activity after reaction with peroxynitrite as well as with radiolytically produced ·OH, ·NO2 or CO3-· radicals. This means that modification of protein structure: oxidation of amino acids and/or tyrosine nitration, facilitates reaction of H2O2 with the heme iron of cytochrome c, followed by reaction with the second substrate.

An attempt was made to prove that spectra-photometric monitoring of urea dialysis, in chosen parts of UV-VIS spectrum, can be achieved only through indirect measurements.

The presented work describes the method of measuring surface topography with application of BRDF (bidirectional reflectance distribution function), ellipsometry and spectrophotometry. This non-contact method enables measurement and analysis of large area surfaces, such as plasters and facades. A standard method of topography analysis does not describe sufficiently all of the interesting features. The visual aspect of the surface evaluation is very important from the functional and utilitarian point of view. The proposed methods of surface analysis enable not only the quantitative evaluation but also indirectly the qualitative properties (visual aspects).

Opis:
Dunajec – a river in south Poland, together with the San River, is the most important right-bank tributary of the Vistula River. It flows into the Vistula River at its 160.6 km. The Upper Dunajec area starts at the spring and ends at the mouth of the Ochotnica stream (including the stream itself). The catchment of the upper Dunajec is placed in two districts: Tatrzański and Nowotarski. It is very important to keep the catchment as clean as possible due to the fact that it supplies both districts with drinkable water. The goal of my paper was to find out to what extent the upper Dunajec catchment was contaminated with phenols. All contaminants in water mostly come from chemical substances, bacteria and other microorganisms that are present in natural waters in huge amounts. These contaminants are permanent and resistant towards chemical or biochemical processes that are supposed to purify the water. Phenol and its derivatives are very toxic, ones of the most burdensome compounds for the environment. Sources of phenol compounds emission can be divided into two groups: of natural and of anthropogenic origin, i.e. resulting from human activity in industry, agriculture as well as in tourism. The most dangerous substances that cause contamination of water with phenols are wastewaters coming from plastics, paint pigments, varnish or glue factories and from pharmaceutical companies. Municipal wastewaters tend to contaminate water with phenols as well, however to smaller extent. Phenol and its derivatives are widely used in many branches of industry as well as in agriculture. In order to mark phenol concentrations, I applied the photometric method.
Do oznaczenia stężeń fenoli wykorzystano metodę fotometryczną.

Method B uses oxidation of the drug with ammonium molybdate and subsequently reduced molybdenum blue is measured at 830 nm. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range of 5.0-50.0 and 2.5-45.0 µg ml-1 with methods A and B, respectively. Both methods have been successfully applied for the assay of the drug in pharmaceutical formulations. No interference was observed from common pharmaceutical adjuvants. The reliability and the performance of the proposed methods are established by point and interval hypothesis tests and through recovery studies.

Two UV-Vis spectrophotometric methods and one fluorimetric method have been developed for the quantitative determination of fluoxetine hydrochloride in bulk and pharmaceutical formulations. These methods are based on the ion pair complex formation between alizarin red S and fluoxetine hydrochloride. In the first method (method A), the yellow-coloured complex obtained in acidic medium was extracted with chloroform, and the absorbance of chloroformic solution was measured at 425 nm. Beer’s law limits (9.5 – 48 µg/mL), the molar absorptivity (5256 L · mol-1· cm-1), and the complex composition (1:1) were determined. In the second method (method B), the yellow complex fluoxetine – alizarin red S extracted in chloroform was broken in alkaline medium, and the absorbance of the resulting violet-coloured free dye was measured at 524 nm. A linear relationship was observed in the range 9.0 – 54 µg/mL. In the third method (method C) the fluorescence intensity of the fluoxetine – alizarin red S complex, obtained in the same manner as for method A, was measured at 594 nm after excitation at 425 nm. The fluorescence intensity was proportional to the drug concentration in the linear range of 2.7-10.2 µg/mL. The limits of detection and quantification have also been calculated. Furthermore, the proposed methods have been successfully applied for the assay of the drug in pharmaceutical dosage forms.

Spectrometry, especially spectrophotometry, is getting more and more often the method of choice not only in laboratory analysis of (bio)chemical substances, but also in the off-laboratory identification and testing of physical properties of various products, in particular - of various organic mixtures including food products and ingredients. Specialised spectrophotometers, called spectrophotometric analysers, are designed for such applications. This paper is on the state of the art in the domain of data processing in spectrophotometric analysers of food (including beverages). The following issues are covered: methodological background of food analysis, physical and metrological principles of spectrophotometry, the role of measurement data processing in spectrophotometry. General considerations are illustrated with examples, predominantly related to wine and olive oil analysis.
