Opis:
Geomechanical and hydrological surface deformation caused by the underground hard coal extraction leads to limited agricultural and natural soil use. The paper presents results of soil productivity indices determined in the area of post-mining subsidence depression near Libiąż. The algorithm of method suggested by Zhengi Hu et al. [1992] was used for the computations. The obtained results of field and laboratory analyses indicate soils degradation due to water logging and a necessity to undertake reclamation measures to restore their previous values. Determined productivity indices (PI) characterise the selected ground as the area with poor conditions for agricultural production. The reason for low PI values is a change in the soil properties because of degradation. The methods presented in the paper may be used to determine the degree of soil degradation in the areas of hard coal mining.

Opis:
This paper aimed to evaluate the physical properties of the soils on the slope of the spoil heap of the coal mine in Bogdanka based on literature and the authors’ opinion. The field soil tests were carried out in the agricultural season of 2018 in the coal mine waste dump. The main purpose was to develop and apply the soil physical quality index. For the calculation of the SPQI used nine soil physical properties: texture, bulk density, MWD, AWC, K, POR, PAW, S, StI. The paper used a system for assessing the physical parameters of soil within the range from 0 to 4. On the basis of the research, it was found that the best parameters of soil quality occurred in the surface horizons and increased with depth. The SPQI value calculated for the 0–60 cm Technosol layer was 0.51, which indicates good soil parameters.

Opis:
Different individual soil parameters or simple indices are widely used in soil quality evaluation, but this approach has many limitations. The aim of the study was to determine an integrated soil quality index in agricultural soils as affected by different levels of anthropopressure. The soil quality index was calculated through: the selection of the appropriate indicators for a minimum data set, score assignation for selected indicators and the integration of indicators in an index. The study was carried out in two areas under agricultural use with similar soil cover but with a different history and intensity of exposure to pollution input. Soil samples collected from the surface layer (0-30 cm) were analysed for physicochemical (i.e. texture, fractional composition of soil organic matter, pH), and biological (respiration, dehydrogenase activity, microbial biomass and nitrification) properties and the levels of contaminants (16PAHs and heavy metals). The level of anthropopressure was assessed on the basis of pollutants emission indices. A statistical evaluation based on principal component analysis enabled the selection of indicators of significant importance to soil quality. The level of anthropopressure was found to be an important factor influencing soil quality; higher soil quality index values (0.50) were determined for the area of low anthropopressure.

Detection and classification of vegetation is a crucial technical task in the management of natural resources since vegetation serves as a foundation for all living things and has a significant impact on climate change such as impacting terrestrial carbon dioxide (CO2). Traditional approaches for acquiring vegetation covers such as field surveys, map interpretation, collateral and data analysis are ineffective as they are time consuming and expensive. In this paper vegetation regions are automatically detected by applying simple but effective vegetation indices Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) on red(R) and near infrared (NIR) bands of Landsat-8 satellite image. Remote sensing technology makes it possible to analyze vegetation cover across wide areas in a cost-effective manner. Using remotely sensed images, the mapping of vegetation requires a number of factors, techniques, and methodologies. The rapid improvement of remote sensing technologies broadens possi-bilities for image sources making remotely sensed images more accessible. The dataset used in this paper is the R and NIR bands of Level-1 Tier 1 Landsat-8 optical remote sensing image acquired on 6th September 2013, is processed and made available to users on 2nd May 2017. The pre-processing involving sub-setting operation is performed using the ERDAS Imagine tool on R and NIR bands of Landsat-8 image. The NDVI and SAVI are utilized to extract vegetation features automatically by using python language. Finally by establishing a threshold, vegetation cover of the research area is detected and then classified.

Opis:
Rainfed lowland rice is grown in land where the irrigation systems depend on rainwater. The use of chemical fertilizers in large quantities in order to improve production of rice will result in soil quality degradation. In order to improve the condition of the soil, a system of organic farming was provided. The aim of this study was to quantify soil quality in rainfed lowland ricefilds using soil quality indexes (SQI) and to compare SQIs of farming system under organic and conventional fertilization. The sample consists of seven sample points on soil fertilized organically and three sample points on soil which is managed in a conventional way, each taken from 5 subpoints at a depth of 0–30 cm and analyzed for 12 soil variables. The best representative soil quality variables forming a minimum data set (MDS) were selected using principal component analysis (PCA), and soil quality scores were obtained using both linear and non-linear scoring functions. The study results indicate that in case of organic farming system, the soil quality was better (SQI = 2.079) when compared to its quality in the conventional farming system (SQI = 1.397). The selected indicators used as the MDS are soil porosity, cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil organic carbon, C/N ratio, soil permeability, available-P (Av-P), and electrical conductivity (EC)

Opis:
In precision agriculture, it is possible to use satellite monitoring of fields. Satellite monitoring systems allow you to get free images with a resolution of up to 10 m per pixel, which is sufficient to determine the state of vegetation of plants on such indicators as the normalized vegetation index NDVI. However, the NDVI indicator already indicates the existing problems of correction which will not help to restore the lost yield of crops, but only helps to prevent further losses. Using the NDSI soil salinity index, it is possible to determine the difference in its properties from spectral images. Also, you can study the vegetation of plants in the early stages of their development, in fact immediately after germination. Soil-adjusted vegetation index, such as MSAVI, is used for this purpose. Studies indicate the possibility of using NDSI and MSAVI indicators for early diagnosis of confirmed crops NDVI and NDRE (indicating chlorophyll activity in plants) at later stages of their development. Studies conducted on soybean, spring barley and maize crops sown in the spring of 2021 indicate a correspondence between raster field maps show-ing the above indices made from March to July. Statistical analysis of raster images of field maps using specialized software showed a correlation between NDSI and MSAVI in March and May, respectively, with NDVI and NDRE indexes in June and July. Therefore, it is possible to judge the expediency of using NDSI and MSAVI indicators for early diagnosis of possible problems with plant vegetation, as well as for the creation of maps of differential fertilization.

Examples of geoengineering methods (static and dynamic probings) that can be applied to analyses of geological environments are presented. The potential is shown by the results of the determination of the values of the soil-density index (ID), the soil-behaviour index (Ic), the constrained modulus (M), the overconsolidation ratio (OCR) and their vertical changes. The values obtained for ID and Ic facilitate the determination of layers with a specific character. This is demonstrated for several aeolian and glacial deposits in Poland. The application of static probings to the analyses of changes in OCR and M made it possible to identify several depositional phases and the effect of postdepositional processes. Usages of the probings can significantly contribute to the interpretation of palaeo-environments (e.g. in the context of geostatistical models), but the results obtained should be handled cautiously.

Opis:
Drought is an extreme event that causes great economic and environmental damage. The main objective of this study is to evaluate sensitivity, characterization and propagation of drought in the Upper Blue Nile. Drought indices: standardized precipitation index (SPI) and the recently developed standardized reconnaissance drought index (RDIst) are applied for five weather stations from 1980 to 2015 to evaluate RDIst applicability in the Upper Blue Nile. From our analysis both SPI and RDIst applied for 3-, 6-, 12 month of time scales follow the same trend, but in some time steps the RDIst varies with smaller amplitude than SPI. The severity and longer duration of drought compared with others periods of meteorological drought is found in the years 1984, 2002, 2009, 2015 including five weather stations and entire Upper Blue Nile. For drought relationships the correlation analysis is made across the time scales to evaluate the relationship between meteorological drought (SPI), soil moisture drought (SMI), and hydrological drought (SRI). We found that the correlation between three indices (SPI, SMI and SRI) at different time scales the 24-month time scale is dominant and are given by 0.82, 0.63 and 0.56.
Dwa wskaźniki suszy – wskaźnik standaryzowanego opadu (SPI) i niedawno opracowany wskaźnik RDIst (ang. standardized reconnaissance drought index) zastosowano do danych z pięciu stacji meteorologicznych z lat 1980 do 2015, aby ocenić przydatność tego drugiego do oceny sytuacji w regionie. W odniesieniu do pięciu stacji meteorologicznych i całego obszaru górnego biegu Nilu Błękitnego najbardziej surowe i długotrwałe susze stwierdzono w latach 1984, 2002, 2009 i 2015 w porównaniu z innymi latami badań. Wykonano także analizę korelacji między wskaźnikami suszy meteorologicznej SPI, suszy glebowej SMI i suszy hydrologicznej SRI. Najsilniejszą korelację między tymi wskaźnikami stwierdzono dla 24-miesięcznych przedziałów czasowych, a odpowiednie współczynniki korelacji wynosiły 0,82, 0,63 i 0,56.

Opis:
Soil organic matter (SOM) is considered to be the most important part in the soil. C and N and their forms are most often used to evaluate SOM. In the last decades, C indices have begun to be used to assess soil quality for C changes in SOM due to the different soil management. Since C cycle is closely related to N, there is an assumption that N indices (derived in the same way as C indices) will be sensitive to N changes in SOM under the different soil management. The objective of the study was to evaluate the extent of C and N indices on C and N changes in SOM (in Rendzic Leptosol) under the different soil management practices (1. G: grass and no fertilization – as control; 2. T: tillage; 3. T+FYM: tillage + farmyard manure; 4. G+NPK3: grass + NPK 125–50–185 kg ha-1; 5. G+NPK1: grass + NPK 100–30–120 kg ha-1) in a productive vineyard (Nitra-Dražovce; Slovakia) during the period of 13 years. The results showed that the soil organic carbon (SOC) was reduced by 26% compared to G because of intensive cultivation on one hand, but on the other hand, in T + FYM treatment no significant changes in SOC over the 13 years of the experiment were observed. A higher labile carbon (CL) content was in G+NPK3 then follows: G+NPK1 > G > T+FYM > T for topsoil (0-30 cm). In topsoil, carbon lability increased after a higher level of mineral fertilization, while in subsoil (30-60 cm) after intensive cultivation. The values of CPI for topsoil decreased in the following order: G+NPK1 > T+FYM > G+NPK3 > T. Based on CMI values, intensive C changes in the SOM due to the soil management practices were observed in T treatment. The highest accumulation of carbon and decomposable organic matter occurred in G+NPK3. Incorporation of FYM, and both rates of NPK increased values of NMI by 45, 47 and 36% respectively compared to intensive tilled treatment for topsoil. The highest values of the NPI were detected because of farmyard manure application and mineral fertilization at a higher rate (NPK3) for topsoil and because of intensive cultivation between vine rows as well as plowing of FYM for subsoil.

Taking into account the progressive degradation of soils it is important to assess their quality. Soil quality depends on a large number of physical, chemical, biological and biochemical properties. In the publications available, there are presented three approaches regarding the use of soil properties to estimate soil quality: (1) the use of individual properties, (2) the use of simple indexes and (3) the use of complex indexes derived from combinations of different properties. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility to use enzymes as indicators of forest soil quality. Experimental plots (43) were located in central Poland. The study was carried out in a number of diverse fresh forest sites. To assess the quality of forest soils dehydrogenase and urease activity and the degree of base saturation were used. One of the final conclusions point out that enzymatic activity indicates current site condition as well as the changes that occur in soil better than soil physical and chemical properties. In other words, in comparison to soil enzymatic activity, soil physico-chemical properties constitute a less sensitive indicator of soil changes.
