Opis:
Contemporary research exploring the Fair Trade movement does not provide a clear answer whether the overall impact of Fair Trade is positive or negative and what are the real motives of Fair Trade consumers. In the paper we investigate whether the assumptions of selected heterodox schools (feminist, ecological and humanist) fit better to the reality of the Fair Trade movement than those of the neoclassical theory. Although ‘better fitness’ does not necessarily mean ‘better explanation’, the mismatch with reality may constitute an obstacle in identifying a crucial aspect of the researched phenomenon (i.e. Fair Trade), harming explanation of its existence and development.
W artykule sprawdzamy, czy założenia wybranych szkół heterodoksyjnych (feministycznej, ekologicznej i humanistycznej) lepiej pasują do rzeczywistości ruchu Fair Trade niż założenia teorii neoklasycznej. Chociaż „lepsza kondycja” niekoniecznie oznacza „lepsze wyjaśnienie”, niezgodność z rzeczywistością może stanowić przeszkodę w identyfikacji kluczowego aspektu badanego zjawiska (tj. Sprawiedliwego handlu), szkodząc wyjaśnieniu jego istnienia i rozwoju.

In the article the author intends to provide a selective, yet fairly comprehensive review of historical roots and trends of Institutional Economics. Institutional Economics is not an integrated theory based on a set of common hypotheses, but rather a combination of various elements coming from different traditions and different social sciences. However, despite diversity there is a central tenet of both the 'old' and the 'new' institutionalism: that institutions matter in shaping economic performance and economic behavior. Economic processes do not take place outside of the historical or social context; they take place within given institutions. The author attempts to classifying different views concerning these issues and explain how institutional economics relates to neoclassical economics and other social sciences.

The subject matter of this paper is Buddhist economics in theory and practice. The goal is to point out the main concepts of Buddhist economics, which is different from Western mainstream economics, and then explain how applying Buddhist teachings to business can possibly improve societal well-being and the condition of the natural environment. The main contribution of the article is twofold. Firstly, it aims to plumb the literature to identify characteristics of Buddhist economics, which is a relatively new field. Secondly, it compares Buddhist enterprises to relatively well-known social enterprises, showing the main differences between them. “Buddhist ideas in practice” are illustrated by examples of such companies as Benefit System or Patagonia. The main conclusion is that money and wealth are allowed in Buddhism, but religion reminds people not to become attached to their possessions and to share them with others. Examples described in the paper lead to an awareness that economic activity can be a means to a noble life. New criteria of assessment of business success including social engagement and care for the environment should be created. Thus, deep institutional changes which redefine the roles and duties of business would be required. The paper is based on literature, documents and online sources. The research methods used are the critique of literature covering the subject matter, comparative analysis and elements of case studies.

In the article, the likely directions of cooperation between economists and sociologists are explored. Such an endeavour requires a thorough discussion concerning ontological and epistemological issues. Establishing such cooperation is not an easy task, yet it is feasible, provided that the common part of the social system and the society, that is people playing various economic, social and political roles, is the subject of interest for scholars associated with the both fields. Furthermore, investigating the problems that have not yet been tackled by either economics or sociology seems to be another direction for future interdisciplinary research.

Development economics emerged as a separate discipline of economic science in the 1950s but it wasn’t until the 1960s and mid-1970s that it began to draw serious attention. Gradually, an extensive literature concerning economic development was built up. In the 1980s it turned out, however, that despite some successes, the economic growth in most of medium and less developed countries was not as high as expected. During the 1980s and 1990s, the so-called Washington Consensus dominated the theory and practice of economic development. This notion covered the whole range of activities that were to lead the developing countries to improved welfare and prosperity. It included strict fiscal and monetary policies, deregulation, foreign trade and capital flow liberalisation, elimination of government subsidies, moderate taxation, liberalisation of interest rates, maintaining low inflation, etc. Based on the developmental experience of over past ten years, a new paradigm of development is emerging, the elements of which can be described as follows: (1) the basic economic environment should encourage the long-term investment in (2) the economy should have a high sensitivity to market stimuli (3) human capital must complement physical capital (4) due to the fast flow and absorption of information in the rapidly changing world, the key role is played by institutions and mechanisms that jointly respond to stimuli (5) wherever market failures occur, an intervention of the state should be market-friendly 6) social equality must be guaranteed if the economic development is to take place on a sustainable basis.

In the preface to the previous issue [vol. 3, no 1 (5)] we announced an article containing a synthetic presentation of Professor Kowaliks most essential views on political economy featured in selected works published in his final years. In this issue of WFES we hold our word and deliver the article as promised.

The article investigates number of areas that could attract interest of both economists and sociologists. The 'Variety of Capitalism' concept is employed as the point of departure for the discussion on diversity of national economic models within the European Union (EU) with the particular emphasis on the trajectory of Poland's economic development since 1989. Acknowledging the fact that there are mixed economies in the modern world, is the key to opening a new field of debate and research. Th e author argues that the issues discussed in his article should be the subject of multi-angled approach exercised by scholars representing various branches of social science.

Acting in a socially responsible manner did not simply materialize in modern times. Social Responsibility has been of concern to mankind since antiquity, being intertwined with the need to help people whose economic and social circumstances may be dire. Adam Smith was the first to introduce the notion of ethics in economic theory while at the beginning of 1920s, the first samples of corporate social responsibility came as a result of social action by enterprises at the time. First, Howard Bowen highlighted CSR in the context of academic research in 1950 whereas in 1992, at the Rio Summit where the representatives of 178 nations gathered, the natural environment got associated, first time ever, with the notions of economic and social development, thus triggering an entire period of developments in the field of CSR. What followed, over the years leading up to date, were actions, decisions and formal initiatives that forged, to a great extent, the perception of CSR. This article points to the most important landmarks of the whole itinerary of CSR and its eventually becoming an institution. It, moreover, provides field researchers with a tool to describe, analyze and proceed with a comparative evaluation of different periods and events.

Opis:
Many crucial environmental issues lead to social dilemmas, in which the personally optimal solution, and the socially optimal solution diverge. Finding a solution to this dilemma is extremely important to allow a good and sustainable management of many exhaustible natural resources. This is especially true when the resource users need to develop collectively a set of rules or practices, and the institutions are unable to provide, or enforce, effective regulations. A few examples are forests, and fisheries, but also carbon emissions. This review presents a selected number of results coming from field observations, laboratory experiments, and theoretical work, which pinpoint some of the more crucial aspects of these decision environments. Knowing which incentives and situational aspects may motivate resource users to adopt a more or less cooperative behavior can potentially be of pivotal importance to develop effective policies and regulations. At the same time, the research we present is also of great interestfor any diagnostic or explorative study that aims to study direct resource users, and their development of cooperative attitudes and practices.

The Irish 'Social Partnership' is the way that corporatist accommodates the trade unions, farmers, community and voluntary sector of organisations. It was the foundation for a period of rapid growth, so-called 'Celtic Tiger', but now most of us have little doubt that social partnership has been a key factor in the economic success of the Republic of Ireland. This simple 'tripartite' model became a platform for negotiations between groups of various interests and aspirations. Now 'Social Partnership' is open to criticism on ground of effectiveness but it would be a mistake to renounce to it. The important question is how democracy may be deepened within social partnership and other similar model as a potential successor. What has developed may contribute to the theorising of 'Social Partnership' as a new form of 'multi-level' and 'flexible' governance and is considered as an instrument of direct participatory democracy. Social Partnership became an important process in Europe since the 1990's and each country had surprisingly different experiences. This paper examines the origins and significance of the social dialogue in relation to a financial, fiscal and social crisis and also a distrust of legitimacy for the political elite in Ireland.

In the contemporary era characterized by information overload, attention has evolved into a scarce yet influential resource, significantly shaping economic decisions and market dynamics. The advent of electronic cash transfer instruments, which partly utilize nonbank structures to identify recipients, has led to a rise in the utilization of collective payment transfers. The development of social networks, crucial for concentrating resources from an economic attention perspective, alongside the emergence of business models like crowdfunding platforms, has contributed to the transformation of crowdfunding into crowdinvesting. Upon examining the phenomenon of crowdinvesting, it becomes evident that it represents a multifaceted interplay of social and economic variables, akin to navigating a complex analytical framework. To acquire the financial capital needed by enterprises, they first need to attract the attention of potential, often scattered, investors. As crowdinvesting emerges as a profound institutional shift in enterprise financing, this article endeavors to undertake a thorough analysis of the process and discernible motives behind investing funds through crowdfunding platforms in projects proposed by companies. Crowdinvesting should be seen in the context of parallel processes of attracting investor’s attention and capital. The primary focus of the paper is to delve into understanding and analyzing the dynamics of crowdinvesting, encompassing economics of attention, business activity, and the flow of financial equity. Based on the empirical research conducted and the literature on the subject, the possibility of crowdinvesting becoming structurally embedded in the macroeconomic system of creating cash flows that finance corporate investments was also analyzed.

The main problem of this article is the basic income guarantee in the perspective of institutional economics. The author evaluates theoretical literature considering the topic and discusses past empirical research. The predicted and the actual outcomes of the programme are compared and synthesized using the New Institutional Economics framework. Hence the basic income guarantee is presented as a social policy proposition, and also as an institution in the meaning of this branch of economics. Originality of this approach relies on the novel use of institutional tools in the discussion considering the problem, mainly in the context of the empirical and theoretical results’ comparison.
