Opis:
The paper was aimed at exploring the efficacy of Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) strategies on social anxiety people referring to counseling centers. To do this, the number of 30 people with social anxiety disorder who had referred for counseling was selected as the sample, and completed Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (1987). The pretest having been administered, 30 people were randomly placed in experimental and control groups respectively. The experimental group received ten sessions of training of neuro-linguistic programming strategies. The interventions were a combination of NLP tools, including the art of self-assertiveness, WACO system, Neuro-linguistic logical level, goal-setting, Switch system, chart sections, rapport, Metal model, encore and modeling. After the interventions were ended, the subjects of both groups were tested with Liebowitz Test twice. The data obtained were examined by using SPSS software ver.17 and statistical independent T Test. Research findings illustrated a significant difference between the experimental and control groups as regards posttest social anxiety scores (P = -0/001). Also, with regards to performance anxiety, a significant difference was seen between the two groups in the posttest (P = -0/001).

Opis:
Introduction: Stage fright is a symptom of excessive emotional arousal, and it is commonly referred to as social anxiety. This type of anxiety results mainly from a sense of being judged by others in a given social situation. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 27 female students, aged 22-30 years. We used two methods to examine the influence of stage fright on the activities and sensations within the vocal tract; namely, palpation assessment and the Vocal Tract Discomfort and Voice Quality questionnaire, which were performed twice, i.e., shortly after a presentation in front of an audience and after a normal conversation. The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of stage fright on actions and sensations within the vocal tract. Results: Participants had significantly higher scores with regard to palpation assessment, discomfort, and voice quality after presentations in front of an audience than after normal conversations, indicating a negative impact of stage fright on the studied parameters. Discussion: Stage fright significantly affects activities within the vocal tract structures such as the submandibular region, lateral pharyngeal walls, sternocleidomastoid muscles, and cricothyroid and thyrohyoid spaces; also, it affects jaw mobility and breathing patters. In addition, stage fright induces negative sensations within the vocal tract such as burning, tension, dryness, jaw clenching, throat tightness, grunting, shallow breathing, voice tremor, hoarseness, and faltering voice. The feeling of discomfort during situations that elicit stage fright correlates with self-assessed voice quality.

Opis:
The article refers to the currently shaped issues of human personal safety in relation to threats arising from events and situations. At the same time, it points out that an exhaustive expression of the need for security is rather unfeasible because this scope in personal view will be categorized by: physiological properties, age, environmental and situational conditions, knowledge, and socio-cultural conditions, as well as life experiences. The author focuses in particular on the analysis of organized crime in Mexico and the impact of these structures on the personal safety of people, social, ethnic, and professional groups, indicating their causes. The rooting or deepening of the indicated social problems and the lack of perspectives to improve them means that the main assumptions of the security strategy, including among others public safety improvement programs, and thus personal safety, is a very complex and extended process. The analysis of the functioning of the Mexican state in the security sphere clearly shows that in this respect state institutions transfer this issue to the citizen. Fears for their safety result from the presence of criminal structures, shocking ones, their uncompromising attitude, sense of impunity, and ruthlessness towards anyone who has been defined by "crime syndicates" as a threat to their existence.

Opis:
Aim: The interwar period in Czechoslovakia was a time of societal anxiety. The aim of this paper is to find the central themes of societal fear, as reflected in the surrealist works of Vítězslav Nezval, a czech poet. The analysis will be based primarily on the lyric poetry from the collections: Žena v množném čísle [Woman in Plural] (1936) and Absolutní hrobař [Absolute Gravedigger] (1937). Methods: The analysis is based on the Josef Vojdovík’s anthropo-phenomenological method of exploring the surrealist perceptions of the body, which is based on vertical and horizontal anthropological dimensions and phenomenological conceptions of fears. Results: Surrealist poetry and other literary works contain images of the body that are changed by fear: deformations, metamorphoses, fragmentarisations, hybridisations, expressing the body as a collage, a mosaic, an amalgam, a phantom, a grotesque, an inlay, and as lifelessness. It undergoes multiple metamorphoses, not only within its own form, but also with regard to the categories of life and lifelessness. Conclusions: The analysis leads to the conclusion, that V. Nezval’s works show a clear tendency to portray the body as an object which undergoes a metamorphosis. The body is balanced on the edge between living and dead, organic and inorganic, it is determined by time and space. It is often shown along the narrowing-widening relation, in stupor, petrification, reduced to a flat surface or miniaturised.

In this review, we are pointing at other indications of SSRIs – apart from depression. This article is based on a selective review of the relevant literature retrieved by a PubMed search and ScienceDirect search. The results of electronic searches show SSRIs to be of great importance in pharmacotherapy of many conditions outside depression. Medical literature supports the use of SSRIs for the treatment of premature ejaculation (especially short-acting SSRI - dapoxetine), eating disorders (especially bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder), obsessive-compulsive disorder and social anxiety disorder.

This study aimed to evaluate the COVID-19 pandemic anxiety experienced by students in Poland and its impact on their: social support, satisfaction with studying online and expectations of success in life. The data was obtained from a survey of Polish public and private university students. The research presented here examined the environmental and psychosocial effects of social withdrawal during the first period of the pandemic on the well-being and confidence in their chances for success in academic study. Recognising the individual and social condition of adolescents standing at the threshold of social maturity is essential to understanding the pedagogical and motivational consequences of institutional anti-pandemic regulation.

The teacher’s role is vital, both in respect to achieving academic goals, and with regard to the regulation of emotional and social processes. Positive perceptions of teacher support can endorse psychological wellness, and help maintain students’ academic interests, higher academic achievement and more positive peer relationships. The teacher who shows understanding, empathy and consistency in their behavior helps students start forming an identity, which will assist them in coping with stress and anxiety directly connected with the foreign language learning process (language anxiety). The main aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between teacher support and language anxiety levels. It is speculated that teacher support functions as a buffer from the effects of negative emotions, such as language anxiety experienced in the foreign language learning process. The participants of the study were 621 secondary grammar school students whose responses to a questionnaire were the main data source. The results of the study demonstrate that students with higher levels of teacher support experience lower language anxiety levels in comparison to their peers with lower levels of teacher support. Students who have a feeling that they can count on the instructor’s help, advice, assistance, or backing manage the learning process more successfully. They evaluate their language abilities highly and receive better final grades. Nevertheless, gender and residential location do not moderate teacher support and language anxiety due to the specificity of the sample consisting of novice secondary grammar school students.

Opis:
This article is concerned with the relationship between adult attachment styles and generalized negativistic social beliefs (i.e. pessimistic expectations concerning human nature and interpersonal relations). Two general dimensions of attachment styles, avoidance and anxiety, are considered to be manifestations of an individual’s image of other people and of the self, respectively. We suggest that both dimensions may be a substantial basis for formulating negative beliefs about the social world. Firstly, we believe that a high level of negativistic social beliefs can be positively predicted by the growth of avoidance (negative image of others) and anxiety (negative image of self). Secondly, we formulate an expected interaction effect. Although the nature of such an interaction is ambiguous, it may be argued as having a synergistic as well as antagonistic pattern. These hypotheses were tested and supported (in favor of an antagonistic pattern of interaction in the case of the second hypothesis) on a representative sample of adult Poles (N = 853).

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between work time control and mental health in workers working long hours. The study also attempted to show how that relationship depended on age and gender. Three hundred and six white-collar workers doing clerical work for over 8 h daily were diagnosed on work time control and mental health with the 28-item General Health Questionnaire. The results of an analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that participants working long hours but having high control over their work time had a significantly higher level of their mental health with regard to somatic complaints and anxiety and marginally higher with regard to social dysfunction than workers with low control over their work time. Male and female workers reported different problems with their mental health depending on what age (stage of life) they were at. It is hypothesized that the work–family conflict, inability to fulfil social commitments and poor working conditions can influence those effects.

Opis:
FOMO – the anxiety that we will miss out on something – is a new social problem related to the destructive use of new media. FOMO aroused researchers’ interest with the development of the Internet and social networking sites. Indeed, it can be considered as one of the aspects of Internet addiction. People experiencing FOMO want to be up to date and, at the same time, experience anxiety about 1) activities in which their friends participate, 2) information their friends know before they do 3) the purchases of their friends. FOMO can lead to the impression that we are missing out on various satisfying events that others are experiencing. This type of anxiety correlates with low self-esteem, feelings of sadness, envy, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and it worsens concentration and memory, which can have negative consequences for education. FOMO also worsens sleep and can reinforce dangerous driving habits. Research conducted on a sample of 500 Internet users from Poland indicates that 17.6% of the respondents have a strong indications of FOMO and that it is slightly more intense in respondents under the age of 35 and in women. FOMO symptoms correlate with personality traits and the frequency of unlocking the phone and checking social media on the phone and computer. The article also presents potential solutions to the FOMO problem that can be used in prevention carried out by educators and psychologists. The groups that should be covered by psycho-prevention are youth and young adults.

Opis:
Introduction: Strabismus is a serious ophthalmological and cosmetic disorder which may cause psychological discomfort. An increased incidence of various mental disturbances in patients with squint has been described. Affected children and adolescents experience more difficulties at school and worse results in sport. Squint may cause a disadvantageous social reception and may sometimes make it difficult to get a satisfying job. It may considerably decrease the quality of life. Objective: This study addressed three questions: 1) Is strabismus linked to psychiatric and psychological disorders? 2) Can it influence social competences? 3) Is it linked to dysmorphophobia (DSM-IV)? Material and methods: Thirty persons with strabismus at the age of 13-17 years were compared with the control group of 30 persons of the same age, rozmowithout eye problems. To detect psychiatric problems GHQ-28 scale was used. To assess social competences the Social Competence Questionnaire KKS (Kwestionariusz Kompetencji Społecznych) was used. Dysmorphophobia symptoms were measured using the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Examination (BDDE). Results: There were no statistically significant differences in the incidence of symptoms of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, functioning, social competences or dysmorphophobia in adolescents with strabismus, as compared to the control group. Significantly worse social competences were shown by those adolescents with strabismus who underwent surgical treatment, as compared to other persons with squint (p=0.006). Discussion: In literature, we have not found any studies on social competences in young people with strabismus. The prevalence of dysmorphophobia was not confirmed among them. No higher incidence of psychiatric disorders was observed in our study in adolescents with strabismus.
U dzieci i młodzieży powoduje trudności w szkole i gorsze wyniki w sporcie. Materiał i metody: Losowo została wybrana grupa 30 osób z zezem w wieku 13-17 lat. Grupę kontrolną stanowiło 30 osób bez zeza dobranych odpowiednio według wieku i płci. Grupy porównano pod względem występowania zaburzeń psychicznych mierzonych skalą GHQ-28. Do oceny kompetencji społecznych zastosowano Kwestionariusz Kompetencji Społecznych (KKS).
