Opis:
In the last decades, research into slope transformation, especially transformation caused by debris flows and shallow landslides has set great store by the establishment of thresholds based on the relation of mean rainfall intensity to its duration. The present author is no exception. In the 1970s, after examining that relationship he distinguished three main types of extreme rainfalls (heavy downpours, continuous rains and rainy seasons). In this paper, while noting the great diversity of extreme events in space and time, he stresses the function of extremely high rainfall intensity in triggering off the slope transformation. Taking into account the role of such parameters as the effect of substrate, relief and land use on the distribution of precipitation into overland flow, subsurface runoff, and ground water storage, he proposes several models that connect geomorphic processes with different types of extreme rainfalls. In critical comments to the establishment of thresholds based only on mean daily rainfall and mean rainfall intensity he follow the opinion on limitation of factors to standart climatic and hydrologic and hydrologic data presented earlier by T. Dunne and A. Freeze. This analysis also notes the role of clusterings of events in various climatic zones and stresses the need of continuous monitoring of rainfall intensity and any other aspects of water circulation on slopes. All of those elements are indispensable for the construction of a more diversified pattern of thresholds.

Opis:
In the Serteyka River valley in western Russia, eight accumulative fans formed at the mouths of ravines were examined geologi-cally and geomorphologically. The test samples were collected from individual geological drillings made with a manual probe, as well as from excavations in the central and distal zones of the fans. Using the Gradistat program, sedimentological indicators were calculated, i.e. mean grain diameter (MZ), standard deviation (sorting – σI), skewness (SkI) and kurtosis (KG),and then particle-size distribution frequency curves, cumulative curves and a Passega C/M diagram were drawn. It has been documented that the grain size of the fan sediments depends on the characteristics of the source material. Analysis of sedimentological indicators (mean grain diameter, sorting, skewness, kurtosis) showed the studied fans deposits to have a large variability of erosion and accumulation conditions. For the deposits of younger fans, the 2nd system of the MZ-versus-σI relationship after Mycielska-Dowgiałło (1995) was distinguished, while for the older, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th systems were recognised. The main process of grain transport within these forms was saltation. The ravines on the eastern slope of the Serteyka valley were most likely created in the periglacial period, while the gullies on the western side of the valley developed in the early modern period.

This article evaluates the potential of magnetometry to establish the internal structure of three mounds in the barrow cemetery of Bukivna in the Upper Dniester River Basin in Ukraine. We also evaluate the effects of geomorphological processes on the magnetometric results. The three-stage research method we applied comprises the preparation of a digital elevation model of the mounds, conducting geomagnetic surveys and, finally, targeted excavations, the latter enabling the verification of previously detected magnetic anomalies. In effect our studies show exceptionally complex geophysical anomalies, difficult to interpret with any certainty. In the peculiar case of the barrows 6 and 7 in group I, partly connected by an earthen mantle, the overlapping magnetic fields did not allow the two mounds to be distinguished from each other; it was possible to achieve only through subsequent excavations. In both barrows, a series of ritual and sepulchral structures were discovered that provided clear magnetic signals. The arrangement of the anomalies in the mound 1, group II, potentially reflects various aspects of the barrow’s structure and its state of preservation, beginning with postdepositional processes related to erosion or to the run-off of material down the slope, and ending with the mound’s stratigraphy, formed over the course of two phases. In turn, in the case of mounds 6 and 7, it can be assumed that the effects of these processes have been somewhat “suppressed” in the magnetometric image, due to the strong impact of the burnt wooden structures located underneath the features

Opis:
As part of a field experiment to examine slope processes, four experimental grids with painted and numbered cinders were placed on the outer crater rims of two scoria cones in the San Francisco volcanic field, Arizona. Each grid contained 50 cinders placed in five rows of ten each. Rows were placed parallel to local slope contours. The mean diameter for each cinder was 1.7±0.2 cm (n = 200) and the average grid slope was 20.2°. Grids were set in July 1992. They were revisited one month later in August 1992 and again two years later in August 1994. Although several cinders failed to show any movement in the August 1992 survey, the average length of movement was 11.2 cm (n = 118). If the total movement is averaged over the 197 cinders that were relocated, the average length of movement then becomes 6.7 cm (n = 197). All cinders showed movement in the August 1994 survey and the average distance of movement was 32.8 cm (n= 141 with 59 missing cinders). The mean annual rate of movement after 25 months was 15.8cm/yr(n= 141). Using the convention that the 180° azimuth direction is downslope and perpendicular to local slope contours, the direction of cinder movement more closely approaches 180° with an increase in time. The azimuth directions calculated after just one month of emplacement display greater scatter and variability than the more correlated results measured after 25 months. The mean azimuth value after the 1992 survey was 163.6±54.2° (n= 118), while the mean azimuth after the 1994 survey was 177.9±20.7° (n = 141). Several painted cinders displayed upslope movement when the grids were first visited after one month. However, after two years the cumulative movement for every cinder was downslope from its original position. Non-channel overland flow is interpreted to be the primary erosional agent responsible for moving the cinders in the downhill direction. Rainsplash is interpreted to be responsible for moving the cinders in the upslope direction and is believed to be the major contributor to the variability in the azimuth measurements.
