Opis:
Introduction. Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease which can have a detrimental impact on the patient’s life. The correlation between depression, psoriasis and inflammation is a subject of many publications. The depressive and psoriatic symptoms, unhealthy coping strategies and stigmatization might be presented in the mechanism of the vicious circle. The appropriate understanding of this phenomenon might be extremely useful for specialists to improve their bedside manner. Objective. The aim of this review is to analyze the current data about the worldwide presence of the major depressive disorder – psoriasis, and the occurrence of depression in patients suffering from psoriasis. Research and analysis were based on searching sources such as PubMed, UpToDate and World Health Organization pages for the integrative publications collected mainly from last 10 years. The data about the origin of the psoriasis disease was taken from as 1979 publication. State of knowledge. The study demonstrated that the link between psoriasis and depression is bi-directional. The pro- inflammatory cytokine, such as IL-6, TNF-α, CRP and IL-17, are elevated in both cases, which provokes the exacerbation of sickness symptoms. The inflammation dangerously disturbs the functioning of neuronal system and human homeostasis. Summary. According to the cited research, the prevalence of depressive disorders in psoriatic patients is higher in comparison to people without psoriasis. Inflammation plays an essential role by being a peculiar connector between psoriasis and depression. Stress and inflammation are crucial factors in pathogenesis of those two disorders and triggers the pathological mechanisms.

Opis:
ObjectivesAs a chronic, recurrent, immunologically mediated systemic disease and a common cause of dermatological problems, psoriasis is often a subject of scientific research. Skin changes located on the hands can cause difficulties and limitations in the performance of professional activities, especially manual ones. The main role in pathogenesis is played by immunological factors – improper functioning of the components of the immune system, among others, T lymphocytes and cytokines like interleukin-12 (IL-12), interleukin-22 (IL-22) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ).Material and MethodsThe obtained tissue and blood were destined for RNA isolation. The RNA was then subjected to a reverse transcription reaction. The relative gene expression level was evaluated by the real-time polymerase chain reaction for IL-12B, IL-22 and IFN-γ genes, and presented as the relative quantification (RQ) value, relative to the reference gene GAPDH. In addition, a correlation analysis of the expression level of selected genes with the clinical course of the disease, as assessed by the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), the Body Surface Area (BSA) and the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) scores was performed.ResultsStatistical analysis confirmed a significant increase in RQ values for IL-12B, IL-22 and IFN-γ in the group of psoriatic patients vs. the control group. A positive correlation was also found between BSA and PASI and RQ for the IL-12B gene.ConclusionsIncreased expression levels of IL-12B, IL-22 and IFN-γ genes in psoriatic skin confirm that selected cytokines play an important role in the initiation and sustenance of psoriasis.

Solanum dulcamara L. (bittersweet) is a medicinal plant that has been used to treat skin diseases, warts, tumors, felons, arthritis, rheumatism, bronchial congestion, heart ailments, ulcerative colitis, eye inflammations, jaundice and pneumonia. A reliable in vitro culture protocol for bittersweet was established. Explants (leaf and petiole segments) were cultured on Murashige and Skoog minimal organics (MSMO) medium with various plant growth regulator combinations. Leaf explants formed more shoots than petiole explants. Plant regeneration was observed through indirect organogenesis with both explants. Best shoot proliferation was obtained from leaf explants with 3 mg/l BA (benzyladenine) and 0.5 mg/l IAA (indole-3-acetic acid). Regenerated shoots were transferred to rooting media containing different levels of IAA (indole-3-acetic acid), IBA (indole-3-butyric acid), NAA (naphthalene acetic acid) or 2,4-D (2,4 dichlorophenoxyacetic acid). Most shoots developed roots on medium with 0.5 mg/l IBA. Rooted explants were transferred to vermiculate in Magenta containers for acclimatization and after 2 weeks, they were planted in plastic pots containing potting soil and maintained in the plant growth room.

Opis:
Atopic eczema (AE) is a multifactorial skin disease caused by a variety of factors such as genetic conditions, alterated skin structure, immunologic deviations and environmental factors, among others. There are two main subtypes of AE, i.e. the IgE-associated (“atopic eczema”) and the non-IgE-associated type (“nonatopic eczema”) with different prognosis concerning the development of respiratory diseases (“atopy march”). Recently, it was demonstrated that Filaggrin (= fi lament-aggregating protein, FL) is a major gene for atopic eczema. Filaggrin binds to and aggregates the keratin cytoskeleton in the epidermis. Homozygous FLG mutation leads to complete loss of fi laggrin expression in skin. Half or more of children with moderate to severe AE carry FLG mutations. Moreover, fi laggrin loss-of-function mutations predispose to phenotypes involved in the atopy march. The altered skin structure and a defi ciency in antimicrobial peptides favour colonization with Staphylococcus aureus and yeasts (Malassezia sp.). Sensitization to the yeast occurs almost exclusively in AE patients. S. aureus enterotoxins with superantigenic activity stimulate activation of T cells and macrophages. So far, AE skin lesions are orchestrated by the local tissue expression of proinfl ammatory cytokines and chemokines with activation of T lymphocytes, dendritic cells, macrophages, keratinocytes, mast cells, and eosinophils which lead to the skin infl ammatory responses. From the therapeutic point of view, besides emollients and local corticosteroids, topic immunomodulatory drugs (tacrolimus and pimecrolimus) have substantially improved the treatment of AE.

Background: Intense pulsed light (IPL) technology has been used by cosmetic and medical practitioner since 1990. Initially it was only used to remove unnecessary hair, but over time, it began to be used for anti-aging treatments, removing erythema, acne lesions, and acne scars. Aim of the study: The aim of this study is to investigate how the use of IPL technology has affected acne lesions and to determine whether the condition of the patient’s skin has improved. Material and methods: A young woman who was struggling with ordinary acne underwent a series of treatments using IPL technology to reduce skin eruptions. Results: The study subject was a 22-year-old patient who had been suffering from acne vulgaris for several years. The skin on her face exhibited changes in the form of pustules, blackheads, and lumps. The entire treatment series was 10 weeks. Prior to the procedure, a very thorough interview was conducted, during which all contraindications were excluded. The Hellgren-Vincent scale, which is used to determine the severity of acne lesions, accurately determines the amount of skin lesions in the form of lumps, pustules, and blackheads. Conclusions: As demonstrated by this study, IPL technology has been beneficial for the condition of the patient’s skin. Pictures from before and after unambiguously indicate the positive effect of intense pulsed light. There has been great improvement in the skin’s overall condition, with reduced acne lesions (lumps, pustules, blackheads).

The purpose of this study was to assess the positive immediate reactions received from intradermal skin tests (IDST) which confirmed the presence of IgE-dependent hypersensitivity in dogs with atopic dermatitis, which were patients of the Dermatology Consulting Section at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin between 2007 and 2009. Intradermal skin tests were performed on 142 dogs (72 females and 70 males) from the Lublin voivodeship of different breeds ranging in age from 1 to 6 years (average 2.8 years). The allergen set used in this study was the Artuvetrin Test (ARTU Biologicals Europe B.V, Holland). The owners of 84 dogs observed the presence of skin lesions all year round regardless of season, while 58 dog owners noted them only in spring and summer. Most immediate positive reactions were ascertained from mite allergens (70.61%), fewer from pollen allergens (19.55%), and the fewest from animal (4.15%) and mould allergens (1.66%). Immediate positive reactions for a flea allergen (4.03% of all positive reactions) were also ascertained. In 98.6% of dogs polysensitization was found.

Today, spectrophotometrics is a promising tool for non-invasive examination of the optical properties of human skin. The spectrum obtained during the study is carefully analysed by models developed by many scientists. Developed multilayer models are designed to reflect the most faithful processes occurring in the skin, its layers and essential elements. Many skin diseases are diagnosed: vitiligo, hemangios, skin birthmarks, melanoma. The article provides an overview of interesting solutions using spectrophotometrics in the process of diagnosing skin diseases.
Obecnie spektrofotometria jest obiecującym narzędziem do nieinwazyjnego badania właściwości optycznych ludzkiej skóry. Otrzymane podczas badania widma poddawane są wnikliwej analizie dzięki opracowanym przez wielu naukowców modeli. Opracowane modele wielowarstwowe mają na celu oddać najwierniej procesy zachodzące w skórze, jej warstwy i istotne elementy. Diagnozowanych jest wiele chorób skóry: bielactwo, naczyniaki, znamiona skórne, czerniak. Artykuł przedstawia przegląd ciekawych rozwiązań z użyciem spektrofotometrii w procesie diagnostyki chorób skóry.

Opis:
Apple scar skin viroid (ASSVd) is a serious pathogen of apple fruits that results in severe loss in apple production. Up to nowadays, many ASSVd management options are applied to resist the disease, but the diserable resulits are not achieved. Therefore, this study was conducted in 2010–2012 at experimental field of Penglai City, Shandong Province, China (E 120°57’22’’, N 370°38’33’’) to investigate whether arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) Glomus versiforme protects Red Fuji apple trees (Malus × domestica Borkh) against apple scar skin viroid. Red Fuji apple trees were inoculated with Glomus versiforme and then potential protection mechanism was explored and compared to noninoculated plants. The results showed that inoculation with Glomus versiforme significantly increased root length colonization rate and clearly decreased the percentage of disease severity of apple scar skin disease. Compared to non-inoculated plants, Glomus versiforme obviously enhanced total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in leaves. Root colonization by Glomus versiforme induced an increase in defense-related enzyme activities in fruits, such as the enhanced activities of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, chitinase and glucanase. Significant differences in acid content of fruit and fruit yield were observed as apple roots were colonized by Glomus versiforme. It is therefore concluded that Glomus versiforme can be regarded as a biocontrol agent to protect apple trees against the infection with ASSVd.
Jabłonie Red Fuji zaszczepiono Glomus versiforme a następnie badano mechanizm potencjalnej ochrony oraz porównano go z roślinami nieszczepionymi. Wykazano, że inokulacja Glomus versiforme istotnie zwiększyła szybkość kolonizacji korzeni oraz wyrażnie zmniejszyła procent ostrej choroby bliznowatości skórki jabłek. W porównaniu z roślinami nieszczepionymi, Glomus versiforme wyrażnie wzmagał stężenia całkowitego azotu i fosforu w liściach.

Introduction and objective. Farmers are at high risk of occupational skin diseases which may start already during vocational training. This study was aimed at identification of risk factors for work-related skin diseases among vocational students of agriculture. Materials and method. The study involved 440 students (245 males, 195 females aged 17–21 years) in 11 vocational schools which were at least 100 km from each other. The protocol included a physician-managed questionnaire and medical examination, skin prick tests, patch tests, total IgE and Phadiatop. Logistic regression model was used for the identification of relevant risk factors. Results. Work-related dermatoses were diagnosed in 29 study participants (6.6%, 95%CI: 4.3–8.9%): eczema in 22, urticaria in 14, and co-existence of both in 7 students. Significant risk factors for work-related eczema were: history of respiratory allergy (OR=10.10; p<0.001), history of eczema (itchy rash) provoked by wet work and detergents before entering the school (OR=5.85; p<0.001), as well as history of contact dermatitis to metals, rubber or cosmetics prior to inscription (OR=2.84; p=0.016), and family history of any skin disease (OR=2.99; p=0.013). Significant risk factors for work-related urticaria were: history of allergic rhinitis and asthma prior to inscription (OR=7.29; p=0.006), positive skin prick tests to work place allergens (OR=4.65; p=0.002) and to environmental allergens (OR=3.79; p=0.009), and positive Phadiatop test (OR=3.61; p=0.013). Conclusions. Work-related skin diseases are common among vocational students of agriculture. Atopy, past history of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and eczema (either atopic, allergic or irritant) are relevant risk factors for work-related eczema and urticaria in young farmers, along with family history of any skin disease. Positive skin prick tests seem relevant, especially in the case of urticaria. Asking simple, aimed questions during health checks while enrolling students into agricultural schools would suffice to identify students at risk for work-related eczema and urticaria, giving them the chance for selecting a safer profession, and hopefully avoiding an occupational disease in the future.

Opis:
Introduction: Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease characterized by hyper-proliferation, abnormal epidermal keratinocytes and inflammatory infiltration. It affects approximately 4% of the population globally. Herbal extracts have better results with less toxic effects than the synthetic drugs in the treatment of psoriasis. Objective: Present study was aimed to access the anti-psoriatic effect of andrographolide extracted from Andrographis paniculate (A. paniculata). Method: We extracted, characterized, and screened the extracted andrographolide for anti-proliferative characteristics using cultured cell model of human HaCaT keratinocyte. Results: Andrographolide at 31.25 µg/mL (90 µM) demonstrated significant inhibitory effect on human HaCaT keratinocytes proliferation in cell culture. To our best knowledge, we reported the anti-proliferative potency of andrographolide extracted from A. paniculata for the first time. Conclusion: The results suggest that the andrographolide extracted from A. paniculata plant may have potential to be used in the management of psoriasis.

Opis:
Fenugreek has a long tradition of use as a medicine and also has been commonly used as food in many countries. This plant is well known, especially in Asia. In Europe, fenugreek seeds are regarded as a traditional herbal medicine consumed in case of loss of appetite and in confirmed skin inflammations. Trigonella foenum-graecum seeds contain wide spectrum of different biologically active constituents which affect the properties of preparations produced from this plant. Numerous preclinical studies confirm the use of fenugreek as a hypolipidemic and lowering blood glucose level drug. Unfortunately, there are not many clinical studies on fenugreek seeds in this area. Published studies often significantly differ in the amount and type of fenugreek seed preparation used. However, results of available scientific research are promising and suggest the possibility of using fenugreek seeds in metabolic syndrome therapy. Undoubtedly, further research is required to confirm such properties of Trigonella foenum-graecum.
