Opis:
The aim of this study was to find out whether Masters class swimming affects strength disproportion and if there is a correlation between the length of sport swimming training in Masters swimmer’s past (SST) and strength parameter’s deficits? Eighteen Masters category swimmers affiliated in Szczecin Masters Team (178.3 ±2.28 m; 77.9 ±2.86 kg) participated in the study. Isokinetic strength measurement was made on Biodex S4 dynamometer. Subjects performed shoulder flexion/extension moves: 3 repetitions – 60 deg/sec and 20 repetitions – 180 deg/sec. Following values were used: peak torque (PT), maximal repetition work (MRW), coefficient of variation (COV), total work (TW), average power (AP), agonist to antagonist ratio (AG:AN). None of the investigated variables were statistically significant in side to side comparison. All of the parameters were higher in extension. Also, no statistically significant difference between sides in AG:AN. Moderate positive correlation was found between SST and PT deficit in extension movement (0.420). Also low positive correlation between SST and PT deficit in flexion (0.396), and MRW deficit in extension (0.352). Masters class swimming did not affect side strength disproportion or agonist to antagonist differences. However, it is possible that swimming training in other categories does.

Opis:
Because its superficially located soft tissue structures are readily accessible, the shoulder joint constitutes an appropriate area for ultrasonographic examination. Technical progress in the field of ultrasonography and the continuously increasing experience of the examiners has markedly increased the diagnostic usefulness of this imaging modality. Ultrasonographic evaluation has advantages over other imaging modalities, with its possibility of dynamic examination, which provides an opportunity for a much more accurate evaluation of joint structures while in motion. As a diagnostic method, ultrasonography is also preferred by patients. The most common cause of pain associated both with degenerative process-induced changes and the posttraumatic shoulder syndrome is supraspinatus muscle tendon tear – ultrasonography enables the identification of various types of injury of this component and other rotator cuff components. Dynamic evaluation increases diagnostic accuracy in the evaluation of the causes of subacromial impingement including instability of the humeral joint and instability of the acromioclavicular joint, the pathology of which has recently been ascertained as being among the most important causes of shoulder pain. Other pathologic conditions related to extra-skeletal calcifications within the soft tissue structures of the shoulder joint as well as degenerative protrusions from the acromioclavicular joint are readily visualised by means of ultrasonography. Ultrasonographic evaluation is also a recognised method in the assessment of the superficially located tendon of the long head of biceps brachii muscle and it has been proven as a very accurate method in the assessment of both chronic and acute biceps tendinitis. It is also considered to be one of the best imaging methods used for the detection of the presence of fluid in the gliding spaces and the joint cavity of the shoulder. Depending on the experience of the sonographer, ultrasound evaluation should be considered the imaging study of choice for the detection of pathological changes in soft tissues of the shoulder and be used as a valuable tool for the assessment of different functional pathological states.

Opis:
Introduction: Damage to soft tissue in the shoulder area causes significant impairment in the biomechanics of the joint, causing severe pain, inflammation and consequently leading to restricted mobility and functional capacity. The shoulder impingement syndrome is a multifaceted disease entity of diverse etiology. It is assumed that this syndrome is responsible for 44-60% of all ailments in the area of the pectoral girdle. Pathologies of soft tissues in the area of the glenohumeral joint affect 1/3 of the population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional capacity of patients with the shoulder area disorder undergoing sanatorium treatment. Materials and Methods: In the study 30 patients were diagnosed with diseases within the shoulder joint before and after rehabilitation treatment. The clinical examination included kinematic measurement of the range of motion (ROM) and the muscle strength of the shoulder joint. Furthermore, the pain intensity was assessed using the VAS. Results: The examination of the range of motion of the affected upper limb demonstrated considerable limitations and statistically significant differences before and after rehabilitation treatment for all the assessed movements. Moreover, the difference between the level of pain according to the VAS before (mean = 6.2) and after physiotherapeutic treatment (mean = 3.7) was demonstrated. The evaluation of linear relationships showed a significant correlation between the VAS and shoulder abduction, shoulder horizontal abduction and muscle strength for internal and external rotation after sanatorium treatment. Conclusions: Progressive changes in the soft tissues of the shoulder joint cause a significant limitation of functional capacity of patients and severe pain. Rehabilitation treatment significantly increases active participation in daily life and improve patient quality of life.

Opis:
Crossminton is a sport that combines elements of squash, badminton and tennis, creating a new sport, which is currently being played all over the world. The aim of our study was to identify and compare the bilateral differences in the internal and external rotation of the glenohumeral joint of crossminton players. The subject of our study were 13 crossminton players from Slovak Republic (25.1±9.3 years; 172.8±9.1 cm; 71.8±16.1 kg). The range of motion of internal (IR-ROM) and external rotation (ER-ROM) of the glenohumeral joint was measured bilaterally using a standard two-arm goniometer. Bilateral comparison, decimal and sport age pairwise comparisons were carried using the T-test for independent samples. Results point to the occurrence of glenohumeral joint adaptation. Given the bilateral differences, the dominant shoulder has lower IR-ROM (p < 0.05) and higher ER-ROM (p < 0.05) than the non-dominant shoulder. GIRD (IR difference > 13 °) was observed in 4 players. The decimal age of the players did not have a significant impact on the rotation values of the glenohumeral joint. Only IR-ROM of the dominant upper limb was lower with the growing sport age of the players (p < 0.05). Given the fact that adaptations in ROM of glenohumeral joint promote an increased injury risk, the present study reveals the relevance of monitoring and finding differences between upper limbs in crossminton players.

Opis:
Upper limb impairment in the early phase of brain stroke is one of the key problems in rehabilitation. An estimation of muscle force can be a helpful factor for functional improvement after a stroke. The primary goals of this study were to determine the muscles with the lowest force in the affected (A) and non-affected (non-A) upper limb. Moreover, the differences between men and women were compared and these values were correlated with age. Methods: One hundred (n = 35 female, n = 65 male) post-stroke patients met the inclusion criteria. The mean age of the study participants was 66.1 years. Muscle force for external and internal rotators of shoulder was measured with handheld dynamometer. Moreover, the correlation coefficients for differences in muscular force with the patient’s age were estimated. Results: Our study reports that the force of the (A) side in relation to the (non-A) was by 37% weaker. We observed about a 40% decrease in the force of the shoulder’s external rotation (female – 42%; male – 41%) and shoulder’s flexion (by 38% – female; 40% – male). Significant correlations between the muscle force and the age of post-stroke patients were also found. It was concluded that about 4 weeks after the first stroke in the patient’s life, the external rotators are the most affected group of shoulder muscles. Conclusions: Neither sex nor the side of the ischemic brain injury influence the muscle force, whereas age determines both muscle force and muscle force deficits. Older post-stroke patients demonstrate fewer deficits in muscle strength than younger ones.
